It’s this push and pull that is reflected in the tone, craft, and preoccupations of \u003ci\u003eThe Hollow\u003c\/i\u003e. The past lurking within and haunting the present we now occupy. A connection to time that places us within it, facing what is gone and what may come. But also, perhaps the harsh notion that time has no concern as to whether we are here or not. “There is a bleak dust that hides on the cracks”.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe unique elemental voice with which we are now familiar from her critically acclaimed previous recordings sits centrally confident in a world that is of Forsyth’s making. Drawing upon personal experience without being overly literal or illustrative, Forsyth’s cathartic reflections are exorcisms in song. Songs peopled by a legion of empathetic characters and voices all of whom share something of herself. Now signed to FatCat Records’ modern-classical imprint 130701, it’s the first to\nfocus on the trio’s own compositions. Each track, however, pays tribute \/ homage to their\ninfluences, collaborators, and their journey so far.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKøbenhavn harnesses a hope, stirred by the smell of spring in a see-sawing, sea shanty-like\nviola and violin movement, whistling and wheezing. The joyful patterns of repetition recalling\nTerry Riley – the artist who moulded their “non-hierarchical” sound. Riley invited Halvcirkel his\nCalifornian mountain ranch. In part, this inspired the first single Ridge – it’s a cap-tip to a cafe\nthey frequented whilst also saluting another Halvcirkel collaborator, Craig Leon, and Nommos,\nhis interplanetary dance of the Dogon people.\n\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNidingen is named after a lighthouse on the west coast of Sweden, where Nicole spent her\nchildhood summers. Good Medicine is another tribute to Riley. Playing only pizzicato,\nHalvcirkel describe the piece as a humorous “self-portrait”. Arvo Part-esque Vetraský too pictures those sensational seasonal\nNordic pink skies. We Like Our Friends, all repetitive interlocking riffing, seems to translate the\nenergy of techno and house. Like Alexander Balanescu’s arrangements of Kraftwerk, repaying\nthe minimalist debt. Småland, while a paean to off-the-grid life, is actually a dramatic tango -\nworthy of Astor Piazzolla’s Zero Hour.
