The vibrant Danish jazz scene came to a crashing halt along with the rest of the world in early 2020, and a tight-knit community of up-and-coming musicians were thrust into a void, robbed of the largest part of their livelihood and joy, live performance. Gathering in a graffiti-smudged artist's space in an old industrial facility in Copenhagen's outskirts, they created a space for themselves to improvise in a funky, groove-based setting. What came out was an expression of longing for all that was lost during the pandemic - a musical antidote to the loss of fun, joy, community, movement, travel and youthful abandon that the pandemic had temporarily put a halt to. Exploring the rich exchange between West African musical traditions and Western funk and soul, this is music meant for dancing, transporting the listener to dance floors both real and imagined. Featuring warm, raw production the record creates a real sense of energy and intimacy, as if the listener is in a dark club with an electric jam band. Through the eight compositions the quintet joyfully navigates familiar harmonic clich?s from 70's soul tunes, a variety of infectious toe-tapping grooves, playful improvisations and melodic duo horn arranging. Walking a tightrope between an homage to her idols and an undeniably modern, self-assured performance, the vocalist places herself in the present through her charged lyricism, and political/spiritual undertones. The heart and soul of everything Rashid does is rooted in the belief that music can remind us of what we have in common - our humanity. An abstract and introspective continuation of their musical narrative, the music is written and performed with openness, curiosity for the sound of the room and with a sensitivity for what the next moment may bring. From the beginning, Little North have been hailed as young jazz musicians mature and wise beyond their years. Their previous release 'Familiar Places' saw them featured on the cover of Spotify's 'State of Jazz' playlist twice, covered in Downbeat Magazine with a four star review, and championed by Danish National Radio P8 Jazz as Album of the week. His upcoming record ventures into engaging in dialogue with Denmark's quintessential "Højskolesangbogen" - a beloved late 19th-century collection of singalongs, folk songs, and hymns which remains tightly woven into the fabric of Danish cultural identity. The record sees ten pieces of music broken apart and reconstructed, a process through which their forms are stretched, their contexts reimagined and all expectations shattered. Balancing on the precipice of avant-garde music and familiar tradition, "I Sang" defies convention while keeping its heart firmly anchored in the beloved music of yesteryear. Anderskov's delicate, subtle and textural piano playing serves as the foundation over which compositional and improvisational exploration takes place. Effortlessly drifting between familiar functional folk accompaniment and dense, complex harmony, the line between the familiar and the challenging is what propels the ensemble forward. The imaginative drumming of Jakob Høyer, the masterful melodies woven by Kasper Tranberg on trumpet and the gentle addition of delays, reverbs and effects by Soffie Viemose help create the ethereal world the record inhabits. Emphasizing the duality at the music's core, the record features two contrasting vocalists that bridge the gap between the two worlds Anderskov's writing sought to explore. Led by Sommer, the release signifies the first chapter of the drummer's much-anticipated Nordic trilogy on April Records, aiming to capture and document Nordic improvisation and composition across three carefully curated ensembles. Bassist Arild Andersen's storied career stretches back to the 1970's as one of ECM's first recording artists, collaborating with household names of the genre including Jan Garbarek, Don Cherry, Bill Frisell, John Taylor, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, and the list goes on. Welcoming the opportunity to work with and nurture younger artists, the ensemble was born when Daniel Sommer selected Andersen for a project during his studies at the Danish National Academy of Music. Later, impressed by Luft's performances in Ireland and Norway, Andersen suggested expanding the pair into a trio. A transcendent musical voyage, 'As Time Passes' blurs the lines of conventional trio roles, and celebrates the evolution of jazz as a fluid, versatile form of expression. Now, in 2024, At the Right Time cements Sørensen's position as a trailblazing voice on his instrument whilst providing subtle nods to modern jazz piano greats of the 21st Century: there's some Fred Hersch counterpoint, Brad Mehldau-esque improvisational elasticity, Vijay Iyer influenced rhythmic cycles, a touch of Robert Glasper's acoustic hip-hop inflection, and hints of Craig Taborn's polytonality. Featuring 12 diverse original compositions, the focus of this trio is on togetherness, with which the three formidable players bring the music to life. Jon Henriksson's bass sound holds the trio in an enveloping warmth that seems destined to become well known to European audiences. Grounded in the spirit of democracy and collective improvisation, the album offers a tightly woven set of original compositions that blur the lines between modal jazz lyricism and the raw energy of free improvisation. The band name O.N.E. is a clever double entendre: in Polish, "one" (pronounced oh-neh) means "they" in the feminine plural - an apt nod to the all-female lineup. In English, of course, it signifies unity. Both meanings reflect the band's egalitarian, leaderless approach and cohesive group sound. Almost three years after the recording of their previous release Entoloma (Audio Cave), the group reunited in December 2024 at Studio S4 in Warsaw to record a fresh set of ten compositions. Spread over two sides, the album captures the continued evolution of a band that thrives on interaction, trust, and shared purpose - even in a society fractured by post-pandemic socio-economic uncertainty and political ambiguity. Featuring contributions from all four members - pianist Kateryna Ziabliuk, saxophonist Monia Muc, bassist Kamila Drabek, and drummer Patrycja Wybra?czyk - the record reflects their commitment to artistic democracy. Bridging Nordic lyricism with the hard-driving energy of New York, their debut album 'Roadmap' is set for release in November. The project is co-led by Copenhagen-born saxophonist Andreas Toftemark, a European Jazz Master and recipient of the Bent Jædig Prize, whose career has taken him from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam to The New School in New York. He is joined by Benny Benack III, the multi-award winning Emmy-nominated trumpeter and vocalist lauded for his charismatic performances with the likes of Christian McBride, Chad Lefkovitz-Brown, Peter Bernstein and more. Rasmus Sørensen adds a vital piano voice, fresh from winning a Danish Music Award in 2024 and releasing Balancing Act (2024) featuring modern drum icon Kendrick Scott. On bass, Finnish talent Kaisa Mäensivu - leader of her own project Kaisa's Machine - brings international credentials shaped at the Sibelius Academy, Manhattan School of Music, and festivals including Pori Jazz. Completing the lineup is New York drummer Joe Peri, a Grammy-winning artist featured on Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga's Love for Sale and a familiar face at Birdland, Mezzrow, and other NYC institutions. Together, they craft Roadmap - a set of originals born from tours around the Copenhagen Jazz Festival and honed on the road. The quintet also delivers moments of intimacy, with Again - a co-write between Toftemark and Benack - adding lyrics penned on tour and sung with understated warmth. Rather than presenting a tribute, Heise reconstructs the four-part suite from within, integrating key elements of Coltrane's original improvisations into newly conceived big band arrangements. At the heart of the project is a unifying harmonic concept built around the double-harmonic minor scale, which shapes the sonic identity of the entire album. Coltrane's iconic opening motif in Acknowledgement is expanded for full saxophone section, and the famous twelve-key cycle becomes a panoramic orchestral movement across the ensemble. In Resolution, Heise transcribes Coltrane's tenor solo in full, distributing it between harmonica and saxophones while building new brass and ensemble frameworks around it. Throughout the album, original improvised material is preserved, orchestrated and reframed rather than replaced. The Danish Radio Big Band's soloists are given space to assert their own voices, particularly in Pursuance, which builds toward an escalating tenor exchange before resolving into a solo harmonica cadenza - a moment that foregrounds Heise's continued expansion of the chromatic harmonica's expressive range. The suite concludes with Psalm, re-scored for full big band while retaining Coltrane's melodic contour and phrasing, before flowing directly into Alabama, the 1963 ballad written in response to the Birmingham church bombing. The pairing provides a contemplative and cohesive close, linking spiritual intensity with historical gravity. With A Love Supreme Revisited, Heise and the Danish Radio Big Band honour Coltrane's architecture while asserting a distinct contemporary voice - expanding the harmonic palette, reinterpreting melodies and improvisations as new orchestrations, and placing the chromatic harmonica at the centre of one of jazz's most revered works.

Swedish composer and multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren invites listeners into the quiet, reflective world of Along the Low Road, an ambitious solo album that balances delicacy with depth. Recorded entirely in a single room with bassist Martin Brunbjerg and drummer Jesper Lørup, the album captures a piano-led trio sound rooted in Nordic jazz, balancing spacious melodies, rich harmony, delicate grooves, and an ever-present interplay between tension and comfort. While Kosmos Trio first emerged with the acclaimed Brev Til En Ven (2022), this new recording introduces a fresh constellation around Thorsen. The pianist first met Brunbjerg after hearing him perform with vocalist Nana Rashid and immediately felt a musical connection. Lørup joined through a recommendation from a friend, and together the three musicians quickly developed the trust and openness that define the album. That spirit extends to the recording process itself. Determined to preserve the music's natural flow, the trio recorded the entire album live in one room. The approach demanded complete focus and presence, resulting in performances that feel immediate, conversational, and unforced. Throughout the album, colorful harmonic landscapes unfold alongside subtle rhythmic complexities, with odd time signatures woven naturally into the trio's musical language. The answer arrives in Novelties, the fourth release under the Emil de Waal Old News banner - a record that honours the ensemble's history while opening a new chapter. Since forming in 2013, Old News has carved out a unique place in Danish music, blending tradition, improvisation and collective exploration. Across three albums and more than a decade of performances, the group became closely associated with Nykjær's singular presence as a clarinetist, actor, composer and cultural figure. Even after their last studio album appeared in 2016, the band continued touring regularly until shortly before his death at the age of 86. Rather than bringing the project to a close, de Waal reunited longtime collaborators Jacob Anderskov and Gustaf Ljunggren, inviting clarinetist Henriette Groth to join the ensemble and help carry the music forward. The result is a group that retains the spirit of Old News while establishing a distinct new identity. That sense of renewal is reflected in the album's title. While earlier Old News releases largely centred on interpretations of existing material, Novelties consists entirely of original compositions. Each member contributes two pieces, creating a programme that balances individual voices with a strong collective character. The album also welcomes vocalist and composer Randi Laubek as a featured guest. Her contributions add a lyrical dimension to a set of music that moves freely between composition and improvisation, drawing on a wide range of influences while remaining firmly rooted in the ensemble's collaborative approach. For de Waal, that balance has always been central to Old News: music with deep roots in tradition, approached with curiosity, openness and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. Novelties captures that philosophy perfectly - honouring the legacy of a remarkable collaborator while allowing the band to evolve naturally into its next phase.
