You might say Charlie Byrd was on a mission on his first album as a solo artist 'Jazz Recital', recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey in February 1957. A passionate believer in the guitar as an affective lead instrument in jazz, five of the ten cuts here are solo guitar pieces. With a background in classical guitar technique and having studied in Italy with the guitar maestro Segovia, Byrd lays out his ambition in the original liner notes 'I'd like to see the guitarists of today using more of the vast store of knowledge....piled up by great lute players and guitarists of the last 400 years......why must the guitar be confined to single line playing and rhythm accompaniment.....if the guitar is going to take an important place as a solo instrument it must be broadened...its capabilities were proved centuries ago'. Featured alongside Byrd on Spanish guitar are Tom Newsom on flute and tenor sax, Al Lucas on bass and Bobby Donaldson on drums. Byrd is also featured on electric guitar on the last two tracks. Back by popular demand after his first solo album we have 'Blues for Night People' the second album from Charlie Byrd. Here again utilising his Spanish guitar Byrd is joined by Keeter Betts on bass and ex Basie sideman Gus Johnson on drums. The album is divided into two distinct sides, with Side A 'a mood series of impressions in a minor blues mode' while Side B's four tracks 'illustrate a balance of semi Spanish a tempo rambling, Django Reinhardt like single line work, 'down' block chording and pyrimidical solo sequence building to a logical and restrainedly exciting climax!' (Pseuds Corner here we come! Sorry Ed.) Recorded at the YWCA, Washington in 1958 where the acoustics were said to be 'excellent for small groups' take a listen to 'Byrd's Word'. Mixing it up between electric and acoustic guitar, Byrd in his own words states, 'I like to leave a lot of room for improvisation......that's one of the most interesting things about jazz'. Joining Byrd are Bobby Felder on valve trombone, Buck Hill on tenor sax, T Carson or Charlie Schneer on piano, Keeter Betts on bass and cello, Bertell Knox or Eddie Phyfe on drums, Kenneth Pasmanick on bassoon with Byrd's wife Ginny taking vocal duties on two tracks. 'The Guitar Artistry of Charlie Byrd' recorded in Washington in 1960 is an album of two sides! Side One 'is all shorties' while Side Two is a selection giving the musicians more room to improvise and solo. Joining Byrd here for this set are Buddy Deppenschmidt on drums and Keeter Betts on bass. We begin with Jazz Red Hot & Cool where the great man is accompanied as ever by Paul Desmond on alto alongside Joe Dodge on drums and Bob Bates on bass. Here we find the fully formed quartet with all the elements of the Brubeck style firmly in place. At Newport 1958 we find Brubeck paying tribute to the legendary composer and bandleader Duke Ellington with a programme of tunes either written by or associated with the Duke. Here once again he is joined by Desmond but with Joe Morello on drums and Joe Benjamin on bass. Finally we hear Brubeck breaking new ground as he takes his jazz improvisations onto the college circuit for the first time accompanied again by Desmond and Morello but with Norman Bates taking over on bass. With Jazz Goes To Junior College Brubeck met the college audience on their own ground where previously they had only been allowed to hear classical concerts. Of course, as we now know, this innovation was a resounding success opening the door to all kinds of music being performed at colleges and universities. Let's look at the line up for 'Dexter Blows Hot and Cool.' Dexter on tenor sax, Carl Perkins on piano (years before Blue Suede Shoes!!?) Leroy Vinnegar on bass, Chuck Thompson on drums and Jimmy Robinson on trumpet. Not bad! And here's a quote from the original liner notes to sum up the album 'the group of original and standard songs that they play are loaded with creative vitality and thrilling solo artistry'. For 'The Resurgence of Dexter Gordon,' recorded in L.A. in 1960, the line up reads Dexter on tenor, Richard Boone on trombone, Charles Green on bass, Martin Banks on trumpet, Charles 'Dodo' Coker on piano and Lawrence Marable on drums. To quote again from the original liner notes 'this album marks a notable occasion...... the welcome and long overdue return of Dexter Gordon after several years absence'. The absence has some sense of irony as it was due to the emergence of the West Coast Cool School of jazz in the mid 1950's. This had left L.A. born (but with an East Coast orientated playing style), Dexter, out in the cold and in very limited demand. Until now that is!! A quartet greets us for our next selection from September 1955, 'Daddy Plays the Horn'. Dexter on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Larry Marable on drums. 'The formula used on this date is rather simple, one swinging tenor blowing at length with a rhythm section that is a joy to hear'. Finally we have an album under the leadership of veteran drummer from the Dizzy, Kenton and Shearing bands, Stan Levey's 'This Time the Drums on Me'. While the line up includes Levey on drums, Conte Candoli on trumpet, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Lou Levy on piano, it also features our main man Dexter Gordon on tenor sax! And as the original liner notes testify 'Dexter Gordon was an added starter to this date and proved to be a valuable addition'. We have finally collected together three of Gerry Mulligans hard to find and critically acclaimed sextet recordings from 1955-56. 'Presenting the Gerry Mulligan Sextet', 'A Profile of Gerry Mulligan' and 'Mainstream of Jazz'. Mulligan was as ever in a period of change and innovation and the line up on these albums reflects his thoughts as he shifts bass and trumpet parts and brings in trombones etc. On these classic albums you will hear both trumpeters Jon Eardley and Don Ferrara, Robert Brookmeyer on trombone, William Crow and John Morrison handling bass duties, Zoot Sims on tenor and Dave Bailey on drums. One thing is for sure, these guys certainly cook up a storm, these albums swing like crazy! Our fourth album is none other than- 'Gerry Mulligan and the Sax Section'- 'The Gerry Mulligan Songbook' - Again a hard to find and critically acclaimed classic, this set recorded in 1957 finds Gerry literally letting rip with all horns blasting. How's this for a horny line up? Gerry Mulligan-baritone sax, Lee Konitz-alto sax, Allen Eager-alto & tenor sax, Zoot Sims-alto & tenor sax, Al Cohn-tenor & baritone sax. To quote from the original liner notes regarding the music within this debut album...'their music combines elements of the current 'hard bop' approach with Afro Asiatic tinges, a needed sense of dynamics and extended form, plus a sense of humour and joi de vivre, so seldom found in today's jazz'. Joining the man with..... 'the mild aura of cultism' around him are Curtis Fuller on trombone, Ernie Farrow on bass, Hugh Lawson on piano and Louis Hayes on drums. Here's another quote from the original liner notes to 'Eastern Sounds'....'the idea of the album was to have an Oriental feel'. To that end you will find references to such instruments as the Chinese globular flute (12 hundred years old!) and the Indian rabat. Of the players, Lateef is heard playing tenor sax, oboe and flute, Barry Harris is on piano, Ernie Farrow bass and rabat and Lex Humphries on drums. Back to the liner notes ....'Lateef announces himself pleased with the album.....Lateef will surprise the jazz public on this set....it would be nice if they surprised him with acceptance'. Yusef Lateef-tenor sax, flute and argol; Wilbur Harden-flugelhorn; Hugh Lawson-piano, Turkish finger cymbols; Ernie Farrow-bass, rebob; Oliver Jackson-drums, earth-board. The former Bill Evans adopted the muslim faith in 1950 and became Yusef Lateef . His jazz background was a traditional one playing with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie (as Bill Evans), Lucky Millander, HotLips Page and Roy Eldridge. His bands had always been 'dedicated to playing swinging music in the tradition of Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Miles Davis, Bud Powell and Sonny Stitt. However as you will hear, 'other sounds' were introduced giving the group 'a distinct character of its own'. Recorded in 1961 'Into Something' features Yusef on tenor sax, flute and oboe, Barry Harris on piano, Herman Wright on bass and Coltrane's drummer, the legendary Elvin Jones, who also assisted Lateef in setting the right tempos for each tune. Let's leave the last words to Yusef Lateef from the original liner notes ....'What I'm always striving for is contrast-as wide a range of moods, forms and textures as I can create. You've got to have depth of feeling.....You've got to believe in what you re doing....Yusef is indeed always getting 'into something' not only new ways of shaping music, but new insights into the man creating the music' All four albums have been digitally re-mastered

Four classic Eric Dolphy albums including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Outward Bound'; 'Out There'; 'Far Cry' and 'Eric Dolphy At The Five Spot'. Eric Dolphy was born in Los Angeles on June 20th 1928 and was already playing his first instrument, the clarinet by the age of nine! Having travelled east with the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1958 and being spotted playing with Charles Mingus, Dolphy was ready to make his first solo album for Prestige, 'Outward Bound' by April, 1960. Here he can be heard playing alto sax, bass clarinet and flute alongside Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, George Tucker on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. For 'Out There' also recorded for Prestige in August 1960, Dolphy is joined by Ron Carter on cello, George Duvivier on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. At the time of recording this was not probably the easiest jazz to listen to, as Dolphy was coming from the free thinking, Coltrane school of jazz. As he is quoted in the original liner notes to this fine album...... Something new's happening. I don't know what it is, but it's new, and it's good, and it's just about to happen, and it's wonderful to be here in New York, right in the middle of it'. 'Far Cry', remarkably also recorded for Prestige in late December of 1960 saw Dolphy joined by Booker Little on trumpet (who also gets a co headline on the front cover but was to tragically die at twenty three, less than a year after this recording!), Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Again it is illuminating to quote from the original liner notes to get where Dolphys' head was at during this time of tremendous challenges in the jazz world, and also a time where work was becoming scarce for the new wave of jazzmen like Dolphy, Coltrane, Cecil Taylor and Ornette. Asked if he would ever leave jazz his reply was instant............'I'll never leave jazz..........I've put too much of myself into jazz already.............to me jazz is like a part of living......walking down the street and reacting to what you see and hear.....there is so many possibilities for growth inside jazz because it changes and you change'. 'Eric Dolphy At The Five Spot' was recorded live in performance at New York's Five Spot club in July 1961. The line up was Dolphy on alto sax and bass clarinet, Booker Little on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Richard Davis on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. This gig represented the first regular work Dolphy had managed to secure since leaving Charles Mingus and getting involved with the new wave of jazz performers. It also had a greater significance to many as it represented the true arrival of the new music that had been threatening the scene for some time. In the true new tradition the album represents a group effort with all three major soloists contributing to the song writing. Hold the front page….'The Unique Thelonious Monk'…….Monk plays the standards………….in a very Monkish style of course! As described in the original liner notes……….'this album is concerned with well known songs by some pretty fair craftsmen….Gershwin, Rodgers, Waller and Youmans to name a few. The choice of repertoire is Monk's and in just about all cases he has also chosen to take advantage of the roominess of the LP giving himself time to develop and expand some very intriguing ideas'. Hold another front page…..'At Town Hall'…….Monk with an Orchestra! An idea he had been considering for some time comes to fruition at New York Town Hall in 1959. Monk's chosen musicians include some great jazz names such as Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Charlie Rouse, Pepper Adams, Sam Jones and Art Taylor….all chosen for their proven ability to interpret Monk's music and crucially to be able to 'become a solid unit rather than for individual virtuosity' (although many do get to solo, as you will hear!). Kicking off the liner notes to '5 by Monk by 5' we read 'this is a quintet album in its fullest sense', Monk using his regular touring quartet with the crucial addition of Thad Jones on cornet. It features two new Monk songs designed for the inclusion of Jones's cornet in the line up, plus three re-workings of older material. Our second album finds Dizzy again with the big band but this time accompanied by a string section arranged by old associate Johnny Richards. For the second side (isn’t it great to talk about album sides again!) Dizzy is joined by Buster Harding as writer and arranger and soloists Lucky Thompson and JJ Johnson. Our aptly titled third classic album ‘Dizzy Gillespie World Statesman’ (which is what Dizzy would certainly go on to be!) contains the music that would make warm friends for the USA in the Middle East when Dizzy and his Orchestra (which included Quincy Jones, Phil Woods and Walter Davis) made a State Department tour of Pakistan, Iran, Syria, Yugoslavia, Turkey and Greece. Finally and triumphantly, we have the 10" LP version of the classic ‘Gene Norman Presents Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra’ album featuring Dizzy and his big band quite literally blowing the audience away as they bought the New Jazz Bop.. to the West Coast. Featuring a band who would help to point jazz in the new direction including James Moody, Ernie Henry and Cecil Payne. We must also mention the legendary percussionist Chano Pozo who died soon after this gig which was to be his last recording. For the ‘Quartet’ sessions two years earlier in 1955 Jackson is joined by Horace Silver, Percy Heath and Connie Kay in a set comprising mostly standard material, but none the less intriguing for that! To conclude CD1 we slip in three cuts featuring Milt with the unique Thelonious Monk Quartet where we find the band covering three classic Monk sides, ‘Misterioso’, ‘Epistrophy’ and ‘I Mean You’. CD2 kicks off with ‘Telefunken Blues’ straddling 1954 -1955 and featuring Kenny Clarke as Leader and drummer. This album features some of the most exciting swinging jazz to be heard at that time! Concluding proceedings we have ‘Plenty Plenty Soul’ from two recording dates in New York in 1957. Featuring a stellar bunch of musicians including Connie Kay, Oscar Pettiford, Lucky Thompson, Horace Silver, Percy Heath and Art Bakey among others. Milt himself, always his own fiercest critic of his sessions said he was ‘very happy about this one... I chose the men for the date... I feel it all worked out’. Here we find Stan opening up both emotionally and rhythmically albeit still retaining his ability and desire to play beautiful ballads alongside band lifting stompers! “West Coast Jazz”………….The result of a live set at Zardies in Hollywood one hot sticky night in 1955 where Stan had put together a pick up band comprising West Coast musicians Conte Candoli, Lou Levy, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne. Getz thought the band was so hot he decided to get the sound down on record and “ West Coast Jazz” is the result ……………..cool!! “Cool Velvet”…………the second of our hard to find on CD selections this album finds Stan with strings! As the original liner notes attest…… “it is doubtful whether there is anyone whose style is better suited to the muted emotions of a string background than Stan Getz”. Recorded in Stuttgart, Germany in 1960 with European musicians Getz manages to craft together a work of sensibility and melodic wit selecting tracks like “Round Midnight” and “Whisper Not” and bringing to them his own inimitable style.
All four albums have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest ever sound quality!

Jazz Harpist”, “Hip Harp”, “In a Minor Groove”, “Dorothy Ashby” plus 5 tracks from “Soft Winds”
Dorothy Ashby was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1932 and began playing the piano at age eleven. She began taking an interest in the harp while at High School and later at University she was the harp accompanist to the choir and played harp with a concert band and orchestra. Of course the harp was not considered a jazz instrument when Ashby began her career and she can pretty much lay claim to being the first musician to play the harp as a solo instrument in the jazz arena. In fact on her first album “The Jazz Harpist” she can also be acclaimed as a fine writer and arranger as well! Here she is joined by long time musical collaborator Frank Wess on flute, Eddie Jones on bass, Wendell Marshall also on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. For “Hip Harp” Dot is again joined by Frank Wess on flute alongside Herman Wright on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. “In A Minor Groove” contains all tunes set in…..a minor key! Similar to “Hip Harp” also featuring Frank Wess on flute, this is jazz of the more subtle and relaxed variety. Also featured are Herman Wright again on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. The last paragraph from the original liner notes neatly sums up the album and playing. “This album not only reiterates that jazz can be played with emotion by the “quieter” instruments but demonstrates that a complete set of minor key tunes does not become wearing…….the minor is a constant stimulus to the ear…” For the self titled “Dorothy Ashby” recorded in Chicago in 1961, Dotty is accompanied by Herman Wright again on bass and John Tooley on drums. Here is a selection of Ashby compositions and classic covers from the likes of John Lewis, Ellington, Strayhorn and Neal Hefti. Another quote from the original liner notes may help explain the sound of jazz led by a harpist! “This is not hard jazz. This is an album that says jazz can, after all, be melodic, that can be gentle without being weak and can be sweet without being saccharine. What is done here is done well, the improvisation is creative, and in typical Dorothy Ashby thinking- it’s done in beautiful taste. She is indeed a jazz harpist, and she does swing”. On “Mingus Three” by contrast, Mingus is joined by pianist Hampton Hawes and we can witness the two sparring with each other while Mingus stalwart Dannie Richmond provides the beat in a session from 1957. Forward to 1959 and we find Mingus in concert with his Jazz Workshop at the Nonagon Art Gallery in New York for “Jazz Portraits”. Among a superb band we will discover alto man John Handy in his very first recording date before leaving to form his own band as well as tenor man Booker Ervin again a first timer in the studio. “…..I think I am finally composing” Mingus was heard to say during editing for the album…….he wasn’t wrong! Finally “Jazzical Moods” takes us into the realm of the avant garde where Mingus’ music delves deeper into the emotions using rhythmic, harmonic and emotional conflict to challenge the listener to the point where they may well feel this is not jazz at all!
All four albums plus have been digitally re-mastered for probably the finest sound quality ever!
