You can hear the pared-down languor of "Yellow Has a Pretty Good Reputation", the smouldering guitars of "Demonstrating Visible Difference of Height", the peculiar charm of "Nastavi, Calliope", and the soft tenderness of "Sunk". Alternating seamlessly across styles, Circles and Philadelphia have the wispy ambient calm of a Liz Harris track, I'm On Your Team falls somewhere between a flowy country song and an 80s power ballad, Marion contains the plucky indie-folk warmth of Hovvdy, and Stand It and Pockets are coated with My Bloody Valentine's wobbly shoegaze. What beauty might life attain if the choice to give up - to become 'sunk' - was reframed as an act of self-care rather than one of defeat?

Sonically, Sunk heralds a new approach for Babehoven. 2020's Nastavi, Calliope, was a lush work of sonic exploration resulting in part from Bon and collaborator Ryan Albert getting their hands on a MIDI keyboard a friend had left behind in Philadelphia, where they were living at the time, while the naturalistic indie rock of Sunk was inspired by the economical sound of Elliott Smith's Either/Or. Bon and Ryan Albert would listen to the record while lying on the floor of the southern Vermont apartment where they were quarantined in the early days of 2020, 'fine tuning our ears and finding inspiration in the exceptional songwriting and recording quality,' says Bon.

Sunk has a lean and unfussy sound centered around roughly strummed guitar and Bon's richly emotive vocals - not too perfect, but not overly lo-f either.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/f74a1559-7299-419a-b8bd-c27bc5510c71_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1733102113
i-see-them-i-see-me
I See Them, I See Me

Babehoven, the Hudson NY based indie folk duo of Maya Bon and Ryan Albert, return with their third studio album, I See Them, I See Me. Through fourteen tracks that crackle with clear-eyed vision, Babehoven has crafted a transcendent new collection that gets back to the heart of what makes music meaningful and life worth living. For the first time in Babehoven's prolific output - which includes, most recently, 2024's Water's Here In You - Bon and Albert blew the doors open on their process, inviting in three different engineers to capture the songs in four different studios. The all-star line-up includes Sam Evian, Kevin Copeland, and Phil Weinrobe, who also acted as co-producer. Much of I See Them, I See Me was live-tracked with a six-person ensemble, with Weinrobe instilling a philosophy of "no playback, no headphones, and no preparation" to create maximal presence in the room. From the opening track "You're a Liar," the band establishes a new palette: a rollicking blend of indie and alt-country that sparkles with slide guitar, hardanger fiddle, and a sprightly vocal twang paying homage to Emmylou Harris and Patsy Cline, with classic folk-rock artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and The Band as further touchstones. In 2024, during Babehoven's first headline tour, Bon suffered paralysis of her right vocal chord and was told she might never recover. In light of this, the album rings out as a sort of triumphant fist-pump. While many of Babehoven's songs are built on intricate cyclical melodies, I See Them, I See Me is full of wide, catchy choruses - anthems to be sung by a crowd.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/url_b3ea0909-532c-406b-8c40-0b43cd52886b.jpg?v=1783933791
