The group's second album Small Talk, however, is clearly the work of a group ready to take flight in a new direction all their own. As they toured Fiesta across Italy and Europe, Leatherette grew tired of the genre's constrictions and yearned to spread their wings. Small Talk transcends all the group have done before and coins a voice uniquely their own, driven by the same furies that propelled Fiesta, but finding fresh new forms for expression. The album boasts some of Leatherette's most unabashed pop-songs to date – albeit pop that's deftly twisted, pointedly perverse and ready to explode when you least expect it. It also contains some of the group's most challenging and uncompromising noise yet, the violent swinging back-and-forth between ugly din and nagging tunefulness a (molotov) cocktail that grows only more addictive with each listen. Where Fiesta saw the group enter the studio with a batch of anthems they'd honed on the road, their approach for Small Talk was very different, leaving the sessions open to moments of on-the-fly invention and sparks of mad genius. The interplay between the five musicians is so much stronger this time around, the group say, a result of the months of touring the band put in following the release of Fiesta. Living out of rucksacks and spending hours on the motorway in a tour van might not be everyone's idea of a good time, but that's what Leatherette credit with sharpening their intra-group bond, their almost telepathic feel for the sounds that will complement what their bandmates are playing. “We were more free to play and to rearrange, because we knew each other better now,” says guitarist Andrea Gerardi, “and the interplay is more focused on this album as a result.” The sessions for Fiesta were frustrating, Andrea says, because “we were playing the same songs over and over”. Their approach was radically different for Small Talk, however, which saw the group file into Bronson, a local club where they've often played before, and record the album on the premises. After the sessions, the album was mixed in Bristol by Chris Fullard (Idles) and mastered in Portland at the legendary Telegraph Audio Mastering by Adam Gonsalves. "We recorded live, all playing together at the same time, rather than overdubbing the instruments," says Michele. The process, he says, "made us more coherent, and the songs more spontaneous." "Our strength is live performance," adds Andrea, "so we tried to capture that interplay. Sometimes we made errors, but we didn't care, because it sounded great. This music is our lives - it doesn't need correction. We were free for the two weeks we recorded the album, and the ideas soared in the most amazing way." Indeed they did. The album's see-saw between angular noise and pop coherence is very much its strength, and very much the sonic identity of this singular group.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Leatherette_-_Small_Talk_fe6c5e16_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726471903
aves-raras
Aves Raras

Italian cosmic couriers San Leo return with fifth album, ’Aves Raras’: a resounding statement of intent, arguably their most accomplished and well-rounded effort so far. Deep Dark Blue is an underwater album, maybe it is even a deep-sea album. The sound is dark and muffled, as if we were in a sort of cradle, a blue bubble, a sea cocoon in which to wrap ourself ves to regenerate and achieve peace, but whose casing also conveys energy. Born following a dazzling baptism in the mesmerizing sea of Stromboli, in Sicily, Deep Dark Blue is an album of suffering and healing which confirms R.Y.F.‘s destabilizing power. According to her: ”Sometimes I experience moments of great suffering, in the last two years caused by my wife’s health problems. I was “broken inside” and I didn’t know if I would be able to go back to the way I was before. Deep Dark Blue tells how I felt and how I would like to rebuild myself. I still talk about the freedom to love, but I also felt the need to talk about suffering, and I tried to do all this with irony, in the most joyful way possible. And it worked. That’s why this is also a healing album”. In Deep Dark Blue there are also some important guests, underlining R.Y.F.’s rise in her international career. They are Moor Mother, Skin (Skunk Anansie) and Alos (aka Stefania Pedretti, formerly OvO and Allun), united by feminism, queerness and political activism, to get precious artistic affinities stronger in these hard times of new repression that we are experiencing. Deep Dark Blue arose from software and analog instruments and was then developed with Maurizio “Icio” Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher), who also took care of recording, production, mixing and mastering at the music studio La Distilleria in Bassano del Grappa. Matteo Vallicelli (The Soft Moon, Death Index) participated in the production of some tracks. Although it flows with compact fluidity, the album highlights R.Y.F.‘s mastery in expressing herself through different stylistic genres. There is a dark electro-punk common thread, but there are also blackness (Run Run Run), alt-metal guitars on dance house structures (Can I Can U feat. Skin), industrial doom (Deep Dark feat. Alos) and other experiments (the instrumental interludes Droplets and Sirene). The variety of sounds corresponds to a spontaneous variety of topics. The theme of suffering opens and closes the tracklist with Blue and Deep Dark feat. Alos, almost as if to represent a first contact with the water and the culmination reaching the bottom of the abyss, and is approached both with a smile on the lips in the sexy Lies and from a more authorial perspective in the heartfelt Violent Hopes and December 25th, the first songs on the album to have been written. Deep Dark Blue by R.Y.F. is an immersion from which you emerge different from your old self, some kind of magical creature in a new form, but it is first of all an electric shock from which one is violently happy to be struck

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/RYF_-_Deep_Dark_Blue_0ec8c120_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726625782
8106
8106

Sleap-e is reclaiming herself. The Italian singer-songwriter’s second album, 8106, captures the spirit of play; the child-like instinct to pursue what you love without compromise - and here it is, that particular magic that rarely survives adulthood, remarkably intact. Each of its eleven songs are vibrant shards which build a mosaic of Asia Martina Morabito’s world: the growing pains of your early twenties, remaining faithful to your dreams despite the hostility of adulthood, places of escape both real and imagined - and the pulse of Bologna, her home and north star. As a student of old-school iconoclasts like The Fall and inspired by the outsider streak of Jimmy Whispers and Daniel Johnston, it was not any particular musical quality of theirs which Asia wanted to channel in Sleap-e, but their confidence to “explode in a raw, free and authentic way.” Though her sound has shifted from the tender bedroom pop of her 2020 EP Mellow and her 2022 debut album Pouty Lips which was bedecked with jubilant brass and Mediterranean rhythms, it’s her self-belief which endures. 8106 is Sleap-e’s most raucous, unpolished and playful offering to date, steeped in the influence of “egg-punk”, an internet-grown genre which seeks to satirise the tropes of punk with its danceable irreverence. There is joy to be found, Asia feels, in refusing to conform, and 11 it has brought her closer to herself than ever before. But to gain her sense of self, first, she had to lose sight of it. Summer of 2023, when the outlines of the record were made, was a difficult time for her. 8106 was the number of the hotel room she felt confined to, alone and adrift from comfort when she was working away from home. Writing this album was her getaway car. “It represents an important choice I made,” she explains. “I chose happiness. I chose myself.” The title represents a kind of mental post-it note reminding herself to stay focused on what she loves; it’s a talisman to protect her from hard times. She returned home, and there she began recording the album in residency at the Bronson Club, a hive of like-minded creatives and mentors who helped it take its final form. At home, her own music was played freely and instinctively. This new release showcases their evolution, with Side 1 featuring recently recorded tracks, whilst Side 2 digs into the archives and includes four tracks from their 1989 Peel Session, released here for the first time. In A Perfect World, the first single to be taken from the album, is fraught with the tension of our times. Sirens wail, then a bass crashes through. Cooped up in his apartmentduring “the darkest moment of the [COVID-19] shutdown in NYC,“ singer and guitarist Mark C wrote lyrics and recorded vocals whileambulances sped past outside. “I sat in the dark...and dreamed of a more perfect world to replace the damaged one we lived in,” he recalls. “But, as gritty guitar sounds and the incessant beat of the drum and bass line charged forward, I knew we belonged to this worldof struggle and chaos.” Struggle and chaos is nothing new for Live Skull. Mark C and his fellow founder, guitarist Tom Paine, were inspired by the nihilistic sounds of No New York and the dissonant walls of Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham. Morello says she created the music, based on the union between the electric guitar and a more and more free and powerful voice, starting from improvisation, that means following her usual instinct: “All the tracks were born during the natural work in progress with Silvia, Stefania and Demetrio Cecchitelli, who composed the soundscapes. Connection to the world amidst an increasingly fractured global environment; connection to their listeners in a meaningful way that provokes questions and sparks joy in equal measure, and connection to their true selves, at their hearts, behind the masks. The creative partnership between two Venice-based musicians, multi-instrumentalist Elisa Dal Bianco and singer Vittoria Cavedon began just as social communion was about to be plunged into an all-time low. Describing their local music scene as one with “only about 10 people, so everyone knows everyone”, Vittoria and Elisa had been peripherally aware of each other’s previous projects but finally began to talk at a party in early 2020. Elisa - a classically-trained songwriter with a qualification in electronic music and a passion for unusual instruments picked up from around the world - sent Vittoria a demo; Vittoria, a self-taught singer with a more pop-oriented melodic ear, immediately heard what she’d been searching for. For Elisa, Vittoria’s knack for a hook was the ingredient she needed to make her unusual, experimental sound palettes pop. We all know how 2020 then proceeded to pan out yet, despite their infant status as a band, the duo continued to write remotely. From those lockdown days came two equal but opposite tracks - ‘Our Fault’ and ‘Spring’ - which addressed the lows and highs of our relationship to the planet. Over time, they would become 7 the beginnings of ‘Idiom’, the band’s forthcoming debut album: a record with an outward-facing eye that spotlights scenes both close to home and far, far wider. On ‘Idiom’, Trust the Mask’s ability to mix the analogue and the synthetic, the physical and the digital, is out in full force. Elisa’s songcraft centres around balancing the possibilities of electronic music with the more tactile sounds of live instruments. Vittoria’s vocals, meanwhile, complement these ideas with both softness and power. ‘Idiom’ was brought to life with the help of a group of musical mentors including Bruno Dorella (OvO, Ronin, Bachi da Pietra) who they describe as the residency’s “spiritual guide”, producer and sound, engineer Andrea Cola, and Matteo Vallicelli, drummer of The Soft Moon. Giving the duo the opportunity to explore and define their personalities as artists, the experience was crucial in building the unique sonic palette that populates the record.

A flickering neon light reflects off empty carnival rides. The town is quiet… too quiet. Somewhere in the distance, a jukebox plays a love song, slightly warped. In the silence of an off-season Riviera, a figure walks alone through the shadows of a provincial night, dressed in velvet melancholy and faded glamour. It looks like a Fellini movie, but something eerie is approaching. While the streets are empty, a ghosts whisper from the corners. This is where Alex Fernet tells his Modern Night. Fernet’s sophomore album for Bronson Recordings is a vampiric seduction that merges ‘post’: soul, funk, italodisco, and new wave with a noir cinematic aesthetic—linking David Bowie to Gaznevada and David Sylvian, Scott Walker to The Human League and the Style Council. Written, performed, and produced by Fernet himself, Modern Night was recorded at Duna Studio in Ravenna and later mixed and mastered by Maurizio “Icio” Baggio (The Soft Moon, Boy Harsher), whose touch enhances its spectral clarity and analog warmth.

“I wanted this record to feel like a dark soul album,” Fernet explains. “A place where echoing pianos, rebel angels, and ‘60s ghosts meet minor chords and broken-down synths. Where the funk doesn’t smile—it disappears down an alley in search of something it lost.” If there’s a narrative thread that binds Modern Night, it’s the character of the Sunlight Vampire, introduced in the first single of the same name. Half-metaphor, half-ghost, this figure roams the album’s ten tracks, transforming nostalgia into a political act and melancholy into a form of resistance. This isn’t simply hauntology in sound, but in posture: a refusal to accept the shiny surfaces and forced optimism of the present.

With The Nightdrive, Fernet moves further into the urban subconscious, crafting what he calls the album’s manifesto. The track is part soundtrack, part hallucination—a night ride through deserted streets, where the headlights don’t quite pierce the fog. Its atmosphere conjures the tension of The Twilight Zone, the loneliness of late-night TV reruns, the flicker of provincial disco lights long after the music has stopped.

The third single, Hey Lady, is more intimate: a whispered confession in a smoke-filled lounge. There’s romance here, but it’s disillusioned, filtered through VHS fuzz and draped in the kind of synth-pop sadness you might hear from a car stereo in 1983, parked outside a closed-down bowling alley. The focus track, Comfort Zone, is perhaps the album’s most paradoxical gesture. Set in Fernet’s imagined hometown—part real, part dream—it feels both warm and alien. The song’s layered textures capture the beauty and strangeness of returning to a place that’s no longer yours, or perhaps never was. It’s home, but it’s haunted.

Musically, Modern Night defies easy categorization. There are echoes of AOR radio ballads, post-industrial funk, and soul music stripped of optimism. Think of it as future nostalgia with dirt under its fingernails: a deeply contemporary work that rejects digital perfection in favor of analog imperfection. As Fernet puts it: “In an era of over-edited sound, the most radical act might be to let things breathe.” The production choices reflect this ethos. Drums, performed by Diego Dal Bon (Crocodiles, Jennifer Gentle), were recorded as full takes—raw and hypnotic. Piano contributions from Little Albert (Messa) add a spectral shimmer. And Fernet himself, tireless during the artist residency that birthed the album, spent ten days in near-total isolation in the Romagna lowlands—immersed in fog, trattorias, and VHS dreams.

“I wanted a sound that felt current, but produced through old-school techniques,” Fernet says. “Even though many of the references come from the past,” he continues, “their combination and reinvention can still generate something new.”

On Be My Memory, a torch song that plays with cinematic archetypes, Fernet inhabits the role of Flavières from Hitchcock’s Vertigo, soundtracked by Prefab Sprout—dragging themes of obsession and loss into the 21st century. In Ruins and Wrecks, the ghosts are more abstract, while Spit the Song is a rapturous outburst of pure emotion: equal parts Style Council defiance and Gary Numan’s post-punk anxiety.

There’s a strange beauty in the contradictions Fernet embraces: a desire for connection in the age of alienation, a funk record about ghosts, a soul album about solitude. He doesn’t copy the past—he reanimates it. The result is an LP that feels completely his own. Modern Night is a haunted and urgent piece of music. In a world of hyper-curated personas and algorithmic taste, Alex Fernet’s music arrives like a message scrawled on a crumbling underpass wall: real, strange, and impossible to ignore.

It doesn’t long for the past. It invites the past in—and lets it dance.

There comes a moment, after years of running, when everything stops. The nights on stage and endless highways fade away, leaving behind a fertile silence. In this lapse of apparent suspension, Leatherette found the space to reinvent themselves. After an intense, captivating journey in which they established themselves as one of the most intriguing and international acts in Italy’s new indie scene — playing festivals and touring Europe and UK — Leatherette return with Ritmo Lento, their third album released by Bronson Recordings. A record born from the need to slow down, switch off the autopilot, and rediscover the essence of songs without worrying about fitting them into a genre.

“Ritmo Lento was born from the desire to reimagine ourselves,” the band explains. “After years of relentless touring, we took a pause and decided to put the focus back on the music and the songs, without worrying too much about labels or sounds. With this album, we chose a freer approach, taking care not only of the writing but also of the production and arrangements in a more personal way.” The record is a mosaic of everyday gestures: notes scribbled in bars and late-night vocal drafts. For the first time, Leatherette decided to write everything from scratch, without digging up old material. They worked as a shared laboratory, where every idea was dismantled, transformed, and rebuilt together. “The intention was to work without constraints, to follow ideas at the right pace, bringing with us the experience accumulated on the road but without falling into routine.”

Ritmo Lento captures this transitional moment toward limitless, more innovative spaces, where the predictability of a standard formula gives way to songs that step outside canonical structures and instead respond to the question: Why not? The album’s opening track, Magic Things, embodies this perfectly: a slow but expansive and porous rhythm, echoing the restless sense of infinite possibilities. It’s a modern record, able to capture the tension of the contemporary world we live in. Ritmo Lento is split evenly in two parts to represent the different directions the band is exploring. One is more frenetic and adrenaline-driven; the other more haunted, like a slowed-down vinyl, animated by a timeless, almost crooner-like spirit. This is not just two different musical approaches, but two sides of the coin underlining the inner evolution of Leatherette. “Musically, we tried to bring out the songs’ essence. We imagine it as a journey through consciousness, between fears and desires, where abstract and dreamlike atmospheres meet consistent electrical rock vibes,” the band continues.

Recorded at Studio Duna in Russi (Ravenna) with Andrea Scardovi as co-producer, the songs took shape there, in an isolated space in the countryside far from the chaos, like a refuge: a suspended place where the hidden could find a voice, between consciousness and the unconscious, between wakefulness and dream. Ritmo Lento is a record of atmospheres that perfectly balances catchy melodies, sing-along choruses, fuzzy cavalcades, and more reflective moments. “There’s no concept devised at a desk,” says the band, “but an intertwining of stories told through sounds and images, like a collective painting taking shape over time. Each song has a precise starting point.”

The first single, Lovers Drifters Foreigners, begins as a haunted nightmare, then launches into a frenetic electrical stride before opening into atmospheric post-jazz suspensions. If it sounds absurd, it makes perfect sense when you listen on headphones. The very title of the album, Ritmo Lento (“Slow Rhythm” in Italian), speaks of this dialectic: the constant tension between frenzy and pause, neurosis and breath, the desire to accelerate and the need to stop. The vinyl is divided into two distinct sides: six impetuous and catchy tracks and six denser, more meditative ones, like an inner diary of contrasts. “It’s a journey through fullness and voids. That’s why the record is perfectly divided into two parts. Like a concept where opposites meet.” If Leatherette’s roots are in punk, today they choose to step away from it without denying it. Because punk, they explain, is above all freedom. True coherence lies in allowing oneself to change shape. The second single, Hey There, pushes the band’s boundaries further into experimental minimalism, combining a rough, slacker bass riff with fragile, intimate vocals, all drifting in a dreamy and untouchable atmosphere. In Ritmo Lento, everything becomes a fragment to collect and return in a new form. This experimental disorder lies at the core of the third single, Cold Hands: a riff born from an idea on a recorder, deformed and filtered until it turned into a strange drone coming from the outer world.

“Blurring boundaries within pop has always been one of our fetishes,” say Leatherette. “Maybe this time we’ve been even more explicit about it. We like contrasts, challenges, absurdities.”

The soul of the album lies in its ability to embrace contradiction. The lyrics are simple and repetitive, almost childlike, but within that apparent innocence, mysterious openings appear: words arriving from the subconscious, cryptic images the band has learned not to reject. Love, anger, sadness, and hope coexist without order.

Noir and nightmarish atmospheres emerge in the title track Ritmo Lento, a song chewing up the 1950s like an endless night. Eerie guitars seem to utter those two words, and the band decided to follow them until they became a hypnotic incantation closing the circle. Ritmo Lento is a living record, unafraid to show fragility and contradiction. A collective painting made of drips, stains, and overlapping colors. A journey that
leads from the feverish energy of punk toward a wider, more multifaceted, more mature yet still restless language. An album that invites listeners to get lost.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/collections/test_3b1bc23c_thumbnail_4096_6f1b53bd-ee99-47e4-8023-d286e4b0bae7.jpg?v=1726471872
