They were considered one of the pioneering forces in \"math rock\", although the members are said to despise that particular term. The band's sound was dominated by the lead drumming of Damon Che and was noted for its odd-timed rhythms and intricate and complex guitar interplay. Also of note was guitarist Ian Williams' guitar-playing, which relied heavily on a finger-tapping approach used for the rhythm playing (there are no solos in Don Caballero's music) and heavy use of a delay pedal. Despite an appearance to the contrary, the group's songs are not improvised jams but are structured works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe founding members of the group were Damon Che, bassist Pat Morris, and guitarist Mike Banfield, with Ian Williams joining as second guitarist a year later. Morris left the band after the release of \"For Respect\". Several bassists rotated in and out of the group, with Matt Jencik appearing on the group's 2nd LP, \"Don Caballero 2\". He was taught to play drums in a band named Stepping Stone by Joseph Hill of Culture. Hill sang lead vocals with the band until a disagreement with the hotel management where the band was playing resulted in Washington filling the role. Washington’s connection with Hill resulted in a recording session at Joe Gibbs studio and the release of his vocal debut, ‘Rockers No Crackers’. Following the singing venture Washington returned to playing drums for Culture in session for the controversial Africa Stand Alone. The album met with mixed reviews and the drummer moved on, finding work on the North Coast where he performed at a hotel where Stevie Wonder was a guest. The Motown Records legend jammed with Washington and his band and in 1982 encouraged the singer to emigrate to the USA. Washington subsequently settled in Detroit and retired for a five-year period. When Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones toured the USA he sought out Washington in Detroit to play drums at a concert in the city. Following the performance Sibbles invited Washington to Canada where he played with his band and joined the Sattalites. After leaving the Sattalites Washington played drums for Shinehead in New York and embarked on an international touring schedule. Following his global jaunt Washington set up his own record label and released ‘Feel The Vibes’, which proved a minor hit in New York. The single led to various recording sessions including his overdue breakthrough at Coxsone Dodd’s other Studio One Recording studio based in Brooklyn. The Studio One success led to sessions in Jamaica with Lloyd Campbell who produced Get Next To Me. The photographic art concept for the whole anthology is simply this: 7” phonograph singles breaking up, in the kind of setting of giving Abby Road back to the people. With the exception of programs 12-13, these songs were recorded in the early part of the 1990s. The intention was not to release them in this form, if at all but to give the record company a rough idea of the songs Don Cab at the time. The ‘punky’ songs were written with the sole intention of obtaining a record contract. It seemed at the time that contracts flowed like water for this kind of music. The band soon found out that it wasn’t quite that easy but did, eventually, manage to sign a deal with Touch and Go. It is interesting to see how some of these songs, or parts of them, developed into others that have become well- known.
