Where the Dolls were frequently sloppy and poorly focused (if often gloriously so), David Johansen rocks with a cleaner but equally emphatic guitar attack (courtesy Johnny Rao and Thomas Trask), while Johansen's vocals are noticeably more powerful and sharper than his earlier music. Johansen's songs are more straightforward and less campy than his Dolls tunes; while \"Funky But Chic\" would have done his old glam buddies proud (\"Mama says I look fruity, but in jeans I feel rotten\"), the celebration of the fair sex in \"Girls\" and \"I'm a Lover\" cuts his former sexual ambiguity to the quick, and the tough rock \u0026amp; roll good times of \"Cool Metro\" and the girl-trouble commiseration of \"Pain In My Heart\" show Johansen could move into more conventional lyrical territory without losing his swagger or street smarts along the way. And while the Dolls didn't leave Johansen much room for slow songs where he could wear his heart on his sleeve, \"Donna\" and \"Frenchette\" allow him to do just that, and remarkably well. David Johansen in some respects seems like a deliberate attempt to sidestep much of the baggage that weighed down the New York Dolls in their bid for rock stardom, but at the same time its celebration of women and good times isn't simple or without its own appreciation of good danger, and it rocks out with a New York street vibe that has a life of its own; it's still Johansen's best solo work to date. To its further credit, \u003ci\u003eBrain\u003c\/i\u003e wasn't just one tune repeated over and again; while ASF aren't exactly ever going to be known for ballads, the rumbling Burundi-into-'50s raunch of \"Wild Women\" isn't the pulsing pagan psychosis of \"New Christian Music,\" which in turn isn't the anthemic, heroic surge of \"Ignore the Machine,\" and so forth. Led by Tony Kinman and Chip Kinman, brothers who previously fronted the leftist punk band the Dils, and featuring Alejandro Escovedo (ex-Nuns and pre-True Believers) on guitar, Rank and File had more than enough rock credibility to satisfy anyone, but on this album, their punk side makes its presence clear mostly in their lean, stripped-down arrangements and their lyrical stance, which embraces working-class rage, bohemian fashion victims, and the plight of illegal aliens along with the more traditional country concerns of love and heartache. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere isn't a note wasted in Chip and Alejandro's flinty but resonant guitar work, and Tony and Slim Evans are an equally efficient and rock-solid rhythm section (the dramatic dynamics and the use of empty space in the arrangements also suggests these guys had been listening to more than a little dub reggae, especially on \"Coyote\" and the title cut). But amid the no-frills performances and David Kahne's unobtrusive production lurk songs in the classic country manner, as the spunky tribute to \"Amanda Ruth,\" the Lefty Frizzell homage of the title track, and the revved-up train song \"The Conductor Wore Black\" have more to do with the classic Bakersfield C\u0026amp;W sound than anything that floated out of Nashville in the post-Urban Cowboy era. If Rank and File were a few years early for the alt-country scene, they certainly anticipated its musical and social values on Sundown -- and made a great little record in the process. Fay Fife sometimes sounds a bit harsh on the higher notes and near the end of the show is notably hoarse at points, while Eugene Reynolds has moments of breathlessness and slight gasping throughout. But the band keeps everything moving in high-speed hijinks, and there's really very little to complain about at the end of the day. As for the rarer numbers, originals like \"Thunderbirds Are Go\" and \"Teenbeat\" keep the '60s fascinations at full throttle while merry covers of \"Land of a Thousand Dances,\" the Kinks' \"I Need You,\" and a rollicking \"Ballroom Blitz\" slot in perfectly among the band's own material.
