It’s always particularly satisfying to give new artists a platform for their music and so it is with “Télégraphe” (DiN58) the debut album by d’Voxx. This duo of Nino Auricchio and Paul Borg explore the post-digital landscape working within the constraints of analogue systems and the evolving phenomena of New Modular synthesis.

The project has developed over the past three years through a series of acclaimed live performances at festivals and expos across Europe (Superbooth, Music Tech Fest, We Are Robots), which included the world premiere of a live new modular performance in 3D-Audio at the London College of Music in 2016. Both Paul and Nino have enviable music careers in the worlds of music production, engineering, remixing and musical education that gives them a wealth of experience that they bring to bear both on stage and in the studio.

“Télégraphe” unfolds over 9 tracks and 4-sides of vinyl to create a sonic journey where each track segues into the next via field recordings at various subway stations throughout the world. The music both looks at the past with its tightly choreographed, Berlin School inspired sequence lines but wraps this in a gorgeous blanket of modern ambience. Some beautiful vintage Fender Rhodes adds to the textures via glitched up modular effects. What is most impressive though is the sheer musicality of the sequencing which is showcased in the glorious opening track “Opera”.

“Télégraphe invites the listener to enter into a world of suspended disbelief, through an exquisitely elegant series of recordings that swirl forwards, ever in motion, refusing to rest in one place” Robin Rimbaud - SCANNER

“This is a meticulously-constructed album. The carefully-sculptured sounds have been created precisely with a treasure trove of Eurorack sound modules and sequencers. It’s a beautifully melodic piece of work with flashes of inspired improvisation.” VINCE CLARKE

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/bbffea98-3a06-42fe-8820-45dae51a7f26_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726731510
george-orwell-1984
George Orwell 1984

A stunning sonic interpretation of the classic twentieth century novel 1984 by George Orwell recorded with the blessing and permission of the estate of the late Sonia Brownell Orwell to not just use the novel’s title but to directly quote from this seminal work.

It’s always said that the second album by any band is the difficult one to create and release. This could well have been the case for the duo d’Voxx who launched their debut record Télégraphe in 2019 too much critical acclaim. Rather than continuing in the same vein they have really raised the bar with a stunning sonic interpretation of the classic twentieth century novel “1984” by George Orwell.

Over the course of eight tightly focused tracks, which feature stunning sound design, what unfolds is a musical work that really captures the essence of this great work. Male and female voices quote from the novel as modular systems churn and chatter around their syllables. Throbbing sequence lines and incessant percussion grooves worm their way into your consciousness as the overall sense of unease and paranoia is gradually ramped up throughout the course of the album. Heartrending strings and melodic themes twist and turn to superimpose an emotional layer over the brutality of the underlying message. Written in 1949 the dystopian themes of the novel seem even more relevant today than when it was first published. Most importantly the ways that truth and reality can be manipulated by governments and large corporations seem to be an insidious force that affects us all. This unique album by d’Voxx could well be the greatest musical interpretation of this novel to date and is another milestone in the burgeoning catalogue of the DiN imprint.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/65f580cf-cad9-4eae-b0d1-4e178ad72b6e_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726880447
herzog-a-retrospective
Herzog - A Retrospective

This bold new release by modular synth duo d’Voxx is their third on the DiN imprint, having previously released Télégraphe (DiN58) and 1984 (DiN75) to much critical acclaim. To give it its full title - Herzog: A Retrospective by d’Voxx - sees Nino Auricchio and Paul Borg expanding their sonic horizons with musical interpretations of the five films legendary German film director Werner Herzog made between 1972 and 1987 with the mercurial actor Klaus Kinski.

Needless to say, this gives the album a very cinematic feel, where the modular systems that are at the core of their sound are still very much present but often in supporting roles around which the genre-bending five tracks rise and fall. Their ambitious sound worlds incorporate elements of prog, techno, rock, field recordings, and even a sample of a 1911 opera on, where else but the track Impossible Monolith, which references the epic film Fitzcarraldo. The duo state that these tracks do not attempt to score the films but rather to inhabit their territories: the fevered conquistador descending into megalomania; Woyzeck ground to psychological dust by institutional cruelty; Fitzcarraldo's monumental folly; Nosferatu's ancient weariness; the slave trader's trajectory through exploitation and dissolution.

This third outing from d’Voxx will delight and surprise their admirers in equal measure and once again proves that the DiN label never stands still but is constantly looking to push through the straitjacket of genre boundaries.
