Composed and recorded using a self-made synth, audio mixer and electronic percussion units, TRASE would bridge the gap between a love for sci-fi horror soundtracks, Gary Numan B-sides and an extra curricular hobby as a sound and lighting designer for school plays - bequeathing a backstory as unique and unfathomable as the individualistic sonic results that he would finally commit to C90. Having successfully recorded his only solo album, 'Electronic Rock' (which was never duplicated beyond his own demo copy), this early musical achievement by Andy Popplewell stands up as a rare self-initiated example of embryonic experimental electro pop and genuine outsider music, marking the early domestication of synthesisers and the dawn of electronic home recording studios and the uninhibited results. Unhindered by adult concepts like self-consciousness, popular snobbery, fashion, pride and fear of failure (while funded by paper rounds and odd jobs in his Mancunian community), Andy, armed with the plans to the Chorosynth kit module, an old junk shop piano keyboard and some hand-me-down tools from his recently deceased dad, would fill an exercise book with plans, arrangements and self-penned new wave pop lyrics to fully realise the potential of his one-man synthetic symphony. Reaping the benefits of his own stencilled circuit boards and soldering iron skills (whilst occasionally enlisting the part time help of his younger brother on guitar) TRASE's homemade technology pop continued to bloom right up until the very cusp of adolescence, when careers officers and real life responsibilities saw the end of Andy's reel to reel multitracking, which is finally presented here for the first time since it was sung and played. This ambitious cross section of robotic funk and moody soundscape sequences makes instrumental nods to John Carpenter and Kraftwerk next to unpolished vocal drones worthy of a sedated Human League or Joy Divison, all of whom shared radio dial digits amongst Giorgio Moroder, Tubeway Army and The Glitter Band as Popplewell's clearest unabashed influences.The TRASE tapes, finally unearthed by Finders Keepers, show the full extent of the projects repertoire before the 'group's final hiatus which, for Andy, was followed by a working education in London under BBC employment as a trainee radio engineer (not far from the closed door of the Radiophonic Workshop) which has since led to a widespread reputation as one of the country's leading independent tape engineers / editors / archivists indiscriminately splicing and baking vintage tapes for anyone in- between Alpha in Brussels and ZTT in London.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/ebc7db52-9de4-4e73-9bc5-7cbfbd1ddce8_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726247954
ding-dong-disques
Ding Dong Disques

LP and download. As an early patron of the Polish New Wave and a key exponent of the development of conceptual Polish pop music his expansive portfolio has remained commercially unreleased and untravelled (like many of the original socialist era Polish made films) and has yet to find its deserved place next to the work of Ennio Morricone, François de Roubaix and John Barry. Entrusting his own bass player with the limelight, Reid's unlikely A&R decision would typify his oblique strategies and challenge the common perception of a soloist within jazz's shifting landscape. Drawing few comparisons amongst independent label releases of the time, Wertman's only solo album combined frenetic bow work, intricate spiritual exchanges and raucous rock solid cyclic riffage to underpin his own compositional complexities. Providing a platform for first-time players like Richard Schatzberg(French horn) and future avant jazz punk participant Ken Simon (tenor/soprano sax) Kara Suite provides an early indication of Wertman's multilayered and non-conformist blueprint from which the hallowed New Life Trio would eventually illuminate. The album's off-kilter commitment is further cemented by the inclusion of worldly free jazz luminary Charles Tyler (alto sax) and the naturalistic back-beat of Steve Reid himself to complete the dream team -- albeit a sleepless one, on account of this one-off quintet's wide-eyed innovation.

Presented in four parts, Kara Suite documents Wertman's very first musical directorial commitment to vinyl, preceded only by guest appearances, months earlier, on Steve Reid's classic Rhythmatism and the ultra-rare The Universal Jazz Symphonette LP which chronicles Wertman's deep-end New York baptism alongside Billy Bang and Earl Freeman before his relocation to Northampton forged this unique and oblique chapter in America's independent jazz narrative. As one of the final pages to be turned in the Mustevic reappraisal legacy this album perhaps remains the best kept secret for aficionados who actively choose to blur the lines between spiritual jazz and free jazz with no discrimination against art rock and the genre that might soon be christened punk (but not as we know it). Finally resurrected via the Finders Keepers/Early Future unison, complete with full cooperation and sleeve note narration by David's partner Lynne Meryl, it might come as little surprise that amongst these pillars of alternative, privately pressed jazz is a story that also intertwines names such as Alice Cooper, Archie Shepp, Kiss, and DJ Shadow and many mutating musical genres that have made this music so hard to pin down over the subsequent five decades.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Screenshot_2023-09-22_at_16.20.02_47a622f2_thumbnail_4096.png?v=1726450938
possession-8
Possession

The intended Possession score in its entirety marks an important axis in Korzynski’s career where his various musical disciplines overlap. Well–documented as one of Frank Zappa’s favourite ever groups and instantly recognisable as the Blueprint of 80’s Mancunian electro pop, the inflated alter - egos of Gerry and The Holograms (and their unrivalled brand of conceptual sarcastic synth pop) successfully remodelled, ridiculed and redefined plugged–in punk before hitting the self–destruct button and burying the evidence under a pile of hand–mutilated microgrooves for over 35 wet summers. Having risen from the electronic embers of Manchester’s first genuine psychedelic band, via Vertigo commissioned prog and experimental theatre, then refined through the musical mind behind the most inspired vinyl moments of Martin Hannett, John Cooper Clarke and Jilted John - the onliest discography of the Gerry and the Holograms anti–band remains unrivalled as the most idiosyncratic and enigmatic pivotal post–punk artefact from the first electronic entrenchment of pop. A consistent inclusion on record collector want-lists, transcending both decades and musical genres, the first-and-only listenable 2 track record by this masked art-rock studio duo, entitled Meet The Dissidents originally appeared in record racks in 1979, selling-out instantly only to be sequelised by a totally unplayable situationist-inspired follow-up which was glued into its own sleeve destroying the grooves in the process (rivalling that of Peter Saville and Durutti Column’s Debordist sandpaper re-hash by at least 3 years). With a life-span shorter than the hours on their studio bill, the band would find bedfellows amongst other incognito groups like Naffi Sandwich, The Mothmen and Blah Blah Blah within the Absurd Records stable – a daring Mancunian imprint that sat awkwardly between older and younger half-sister labels Rabid and Relentless. With a 11 release library of mostly non-returning faceless atonal electronic punk / DIY industrial bands Absurd would spearhead and pre-empt the subsequent decades of Mancunian independent record labels that followed in the footsteps of the more commercially successful Factory Records (while also drawing comparisons with Spiral Scratch, Test Pressings, Object Music and Throbbing Gristles’ Industrial Records). Despite just one official title to their name however, the true identity behind Gerry And The Holograms would unify those sister-labels and collectively play an important supporting role in Manchester’s independent music history with a story which goes back as far as most rain soaked memories can attempt to forget.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/f10b7493-195b-4adf-a342-ef8d14af60e6_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726633257
sam-spence-sounds
Sam Spence Sounds

Born in San Francisco in 1927, Samuel Spence is a peculiar piece in the complicated Krautrock puzzle. As an American ex-pat working in a community of German rock musicians in the early 70's, Spence shared his alien status with the likes of David Johnson and Malcolm Mooney (Can), Carole Muriel (Brainticket), Maria Archer (Embryo), Bill Barone (Wallenstein) and the band sweet smoke. While in Munich, Spence was introduced to Eckart Rahn who owned the Kuckuck label. The pair discussed the idea of recording an album of electronic music which would appeal to ambient and experimental enthusiasts who were searching for cosmic sounds after the rise of Krautrock bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream. After the release of two moog-fuelled singles including a cover version of Focus's 1972 hit single 'Sylvia', Rahn agreed to release Spence's debut LP of synthesizer based pop music which would sit amongst his eclectic Kuckuck roster, which also included the minimal electronic pulses of Deuter, the experimental field recordings of Ernst Schultz and the avant garde releases of Peter Michael Hamel and Terry Riley. Having continued to expand his successful career in symphonic music Sam would, by the end of the 1970's, return to orchestral film music seizing further opportunities to work as a composer recording over 500 cues for films made by the NFL back in his native USA. For vinyl junkies Spence's american football music existed on a series of library records manufactured by the NFL until it was finally commercially released in the mid 90's. Still residing in Germany, Spence continues to make theme music, and in recent years he has been heard on shows such as 'the Simpsons', 'Everybody Loves Raymond', 'King of Queens', 'Saturday Night Live', 'FBI's Most Wanted', 'the Tonight Show with Jay Leno', 'Sponge Bob Squarepants' and several TV and radio commercials.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/e48030f1-8cc8-4c7c-94f4-f8ccbdc5930d_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726633479
roses-rouge-sang
Roses Rouge Sang

precisely four decades since the original release of the 1971 album 'histoire de melody nelson', serge gainsbourg's most celebrated composer, arranger and composer jean-claude vannier now returns to the same artistic territory that has since come to represent his most iconic period and continually inspire almost five generations of experimental rock luminaries. respected throughout france as a long running singer-songwriter and experimental composer in his own right it has taken this inclusive forty year period for his music to travel beyond his central european fanbase thanks to a growing community of vinyl archeologists and french pop and conceptual rock enthusiasts who have come to clearly recognise the recurring production credits to jcv as a seal of quality and approval while taking gambles on parisian picture sleeve pop. this all new album comprises a personnel of the legendary european session players that appeared on classic vannier and gainsbourg scores such as 'cannabis', 'la horse', 'slogan' and 'les chemins de katmandou', as well as 'histoire de melody nelson' itself, and his own mythical follow up, the truly bizarre 1973 avant-garde ballet 'l'enfant assassin des mouches' (which was finally rescued from obscurity in 2005 by finders keepers as the label's debut release). recorded partly in paris and partly in the uk (not unlike the classic gainsbourg lps) the album 'roses rouge sang' (blood red roses) hears jcv taking care of vocal duties in his own unique style combining the macabre and the optimistic with ingenious world play and expert poetic use of the french language. flourishing from initial rehearsal sessions for the first-ever live performance of 'histoire de melody nelson' (which was eventually staged by finders keepers at the barbican theatre in london in 2006), 'roses rouge sang' captures the authentic line-up just weeks after their initial reunion.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/cfbc2818-8e02-4e5c-a444-b75436fe7b6b_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726633998
teddy-bar-lilith
Teddy Bar / Lilith

CD features four extra tracks. This is history in the remaking.

This record represents a musical revolution, a scientific benchmark and a trophy in the cabinet of counter culture creativity. This record is a triumphant yardstick in the synthesiser space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial moon. While pondering the early accolades of this record it's daunting to learn that this record was in fact not a record at all... It was a manifesto and a gateway to a new world, that somehow never quite opened. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic, pulses, tones and harmonics found on this 1975 live presentation / grant application / educational demonstration had been placed in a phonographic context alongside the promoted work of Morton Subotnick, Walter Carlos or Tomita then the name Suzanne Ciani and her influence would have already radically changed the shape, sound and gender of our record collections. Hopefully there is still chance.

In short, Suzanne was a self-imposed twenty-year-old employee of the Buchla modular synthesiser company, San Francisco's neck and neck contender to New York's Moog. Buchla was run by a community of festival freaks and academic acid eaters whose roots in new age lifestyles and the reinvention of art and music replaced the business acumen enjoyed by its likeminded East Coasters. In the eyes of the consumer the creative refusal to adopt rudimentary facets like a piano keyboard controller rendered the Buchla synthesiser the more obscure stubborn sister of the synth marathon, steering these incredible units away from the mainstream into the homes and studios of free music aficionados, art house composers and die-hard revolutionaries. Championed and semi-showcased by composer Morton Subotnick on his albums The Bull and Silver Apples Of The Moon, Buchla's versatility began to open the minds of a new generation, but the high-end design features and no-compromise modus operandi was often confused with incompatibility and, in the pulsating shadow of Moog's marketing, the revolution would not be televised nor patronised. Suzanne Ciani, as one of the very few female composers on the frontline (and also providing the back line) did not lose faith.

These "concerts" are the epitome of rare music technology historic documents, performed by a real musician whose skills and academic education in classical composition already outweighed her male synthesiser contemporaries of twice her age. At the very start of her fragile career these recordings are nothing short of sacrificial ode to her mentor and machine, sonic pickets of the revolution and love letters to an absolutely genuine vision of and 'alternative' musical future. In denouncing her own precocious polymathmatic past in a bid to persuade the world to sing from a new hymn sheet, Suzanne Ciani created a bi-product of never before heard music that would render the pigeon holes 'ambient' and 'futuristic' utterly inadequate. Providing nothing short of an entirely different feminine take on the experimental "records" of Morton Subotnick and proving to a small, judgmental audience and jury the true versatility of one of the most radical and idiosyncratic musical instruments of the 20th century. These recordings have not been heard since then.

The importance of these genuinely lost pieces of electronic musics puzzle almost eclipses the glaring detail of Suzanne's gender as a distinct minority in an almost exclusively male dominated, faceless, coldly scientific landscape. Those familiar with Suzanne's work, a vast vault of previously unpublished "non-records", will already know how the creative politics in her art of "being" simultaneously reshaped the worlds of synth design, advertising and film composition before anyone had even dropped a stylus in her groove. Needless to say this record, finally commanding the archival format of choice, courtesy of the Ciani and Finders Keepers longstanding unison, was not the last "first" with which this hugely important composer would gift society, and the future of a wide range of exciting evolving creative disciplines.

You have found a holy grail of electronic music and a female musical pioneer who was too proactive to take the trophies. With the light of Buchla and Ciani's initial flame Finders Keepers continues to take a torch through the vaults of this lesser-celebrated music legacy shining a beam on these "non-records" that evaded the limelight for almost half a century. One such musician was the late great drummer Steve Reid, whose reissued eclectic recordings on his own Mustevic Sound label gave his career a second wind.

Though teased on a well-received compilation, one Mustevic release never saw reissue: New Life Trio’s Visions Of The Third Eye, a tremendous collaborative effort between Reid, guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist David Wertman.

Early Future Records and Finders Keepers Records are proud to announce the reissue of the classic, final Mustevic recording for the first time as a vinyl release. The release also includes a 20-page written zine featuring an in-depth testimonial and interview with Brandon Ross, and an explorative essay by Finders Keepers’ Andy Votel, as well as a wealth of archival photos, scores and reviews.

Reid’s long and varied career began in his native New York City, where he was involved early on as a member of the Apollo Theater House Band and the R&B scene of the 1960s, including recordings with Martha Reeves and James Brown. After a stint in prison for dodging the draft as a conscientious objector, the drummer came out swinging in the 1970s. He worked regularly as a session and Broadway musician even while immersing himself into the jazz world, from the straight-ahead styles of Freddie Hubbard and Horace Silver to the otherworldly sounds of Sun Ra and Charles Tyler.

The do-it-yourself ethos of the New York Loft Scene inspired Reid to create his own label, Mustevic Sound, on which he began releasing his own recordings and those of a couple of friends. One of these trusted friends was David Wertman, a young bassist from New York who released his own ‘Kara Suite’ on Mustevic in 1976.

New Life Trio’s story began when Wertman moved from New York to the more sedate but creatively vibrant town of Northampton, Massachusetts. Here Wertman met Brandon Ross, a young guitarist from New Jersey who had relocated there with his brother to join a coterie of New York expats who had found a comfortable, collaborative environment amidst the liberal college towns in the area, including avant-garde legends Archie Shepp and Marion Brown. Wertman and Ross became friends and began to perform together regularly, both formally and informally.

A string trio of Wertman, Ross and violinist Terry Jenoure was set to record, but Jenoure dropped out just prior to the date. This led Wertman to call his friend Steve Reid to come join the two at the Tin Pan Hollow Studios in Vermont to record what would become ‘Visions Of The Third Eye’ on December 6, 1978. Originally conceived as an all-acoustic date, the recording would morph slightly when Ross added electric guitar muscle on a number of pieces. Reid would then take the helm and release the recording in 1980, giving a very auspicious birth to what has now become a classic spiritual jazz recording.

Fast forward to 1995... New Life Trio get a belated second wind from Stuart Baker’s inclusion of the Ross-voiced ‘Empty Streets’ on his ‘Universal Sounds of America’ compilation. The brief, haunting lead track just hinted at what the full Visions Of The Third Eye album had to offer. Audience awareness resulted in the pursuit of out-of-print original LPs, thus the rarity of ‘Visions Of The Third Eye’ led to it becoming a kind of ‘holy grail’ record for collectors of jazz and creative music. The album’s cover image was even incorporated into the cover of Soul Jazz’s ‘Freedom, Rhythm and Sound’, a wonderful coffee table book presenting album covers from those revolutionary decades in Black creative music. The recording’s legend was cemented.

New Life Trio’s legend continues to grow partly due to the brevity of its existence. The triumvirate of Reid, Ross and Wertman would never work together again. Each member would continue along his own path, finding success in numerous projects. Reid’s career was reinvigorated with the reissue of the bulk of his Mustevic Sound recordings in the early 2000s, which led him to a rewarding partnership with Four Tet’s Kieran Hebden until Reid’s untimely passing in 2010. Wertman balanced life between Florida and Massachusetts as a regular in the local jazz scene, recording numerous projects with his wife, Lynne Meryl, before passing away in 2013. The fantastically creative Ross has remained active in the New York creative music scene with a number of projects, most notably with Henry Threadgill, Cassandra Wilson and Harriet Tubman, a wildly eclectic co-led band with underpinnings of rock, dub and free jazz.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/d07c2b92-b225-4cc7-91cd-f0c32aa68a53_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727338338
mala-morska-vila
Mala Morska Vila

Beautifully remastered with updated liner notes including rare photos with the full cooperation of the seminal Barrandov studios in Prague. In the radiantly visceral autobiographical film, a young Jodorowsky is confronted by a collection of compelling characters that contributed to his burgeoning surreal consciousness. The legendary filmmaker was born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on the edge of the Chilean desert, where the film was shot. Blending his personal history with metaphor, mythology, and poetry, 'The Dance Of Reality' reflects Jodorowsky's philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a 'dance' created by our own imaginations. Written, performed and recorded by Alejandro's son, the acclaimed actor, director and musician Adan Jodorowsky, 'Dance Of Reality's original soundtrack expands from gossamer folk acoustic guitar themes and solo piano compositions to rich cinematic orchestral arrangements echoing the work of John Barry and Ennio Morricone combined with extrovert narrative traditional pieces executed in the vein of Nino Rota. Amazing master tape discovery of an original 1973 misplaced Jean Claude Vannier single including alternate arrangements/instrumentation from the first days of the 'L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches' sessions. Late in 2015, exactly ten years since Finders Keepers Records first liberated Jean Claude Vannier's 1973 French Holy Grail concept LP 'L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches', the label was handed a very unexpected anniversary gift in the form of a small clutch of lost Vannier studio master tapes. Having worked closely with Jean Claude to leave no stone unturned both label and artist were shocked and delighted to be given what turned out to be further insights in to the musical ideas and ambitions of the 29-year-old composer during those mythical studio sessions which occurred a few months after the release of his seminal work on 'Histoire De Melody Nelson'. The original 'L'Enfant Assassin Des Mouches' LP has been the source of inspiration and awe for artists of all disciplines, critics and connoisseurs alike while retaining a firm fixture in many a tome and top ten, accounting for indispensable moments in avant-garde pop and experimental rock music and (with FKs repressing schedule as testimony) continues to gain momentum. The fact that these masters were dubbed to a separate master tape as a proposed aborted major label single indicates that they were the first (and most exciting) tracks to emerge from the flamboyant visionary sessions which eventually trickled out on small independent French label stimulating record collector nirvana in the process. Including new unheard instrumentation, alternative arrangements and mix board levels, this special limited release comes packaged in authentic 1970's promo bag artwork and marks the first in a series of new vintage Vannier projects extracted from a new vault of genuinely, previously "lost" materials.
