Also featured are the wondrous sounds of Green On Red, The Long Ryder’s, Game Theory, True West, Thin White Rope and others highly worth your attention. If you are not familiar with some of the bands here, you will surely question how that is possible. The Paisley Underground, if anything, encapsulated a certain musical mindset, an outlook where the past and the future would collide in the moment. This thread would bond the bands, yet each honed it’s own sound in a twisted incarnation of the seeds planted two decades earlier. Whilst the ‘scene’ did remain contained, its influence did in fact spread throughout mainstream culture as the Bangles stuck a chord into the heart of MTV, whilst Prince took inspiration from the movement in his own songwriting and the naming of Paisley Park, as well as signing The Three O’Clock to his label and writing one of the Bangles biggest hits.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs you listen to the tracks on \u003ci\u003eTwisted Dream Machine\u003c\/i\u003e you will be reminded that there is still music left to discover and inspire, this compilation is aimed to hopefully delight longtime fans, as well as ignite a passion for those new to the bands. Like a pop punk fuelled West Side Story set in California, the tracks stick in your eardrums long after listening not only due to the wild lyrical content, but also the quality song writing chops of the main duo Dennis Dragon and Drew Steele who knew how to pen the ‘Ramones go West’ hooks needed for their brand of new wave pop.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn stage the band committed fully to the beach life concept, constructing a full size lifeguard tower, as singer Drew would ride the stage on his Skatar - a custom designed skateboard affixed to a Fender Stratocaster neck and pickups. The band were so committed to surfing in fact, that rumour has it they were dropped by their record label for not turning up to a big show because the waves were just too good to miss. Whilst the principles and sonics harnessed on AOF’s debut album may have had more in common with the sounds coming out of Washington D.C., this record has an authentic Chicago savvy running through it, effortlessly projecting a street level tone whilst simultaneously aiming to show the possibilities of what a hardcore record could be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn retrospect, AOF’s debut was a hardcore album ahead of it’s time, perhaps the reason it’s fervent themes and artistry still feel so fresh and relevant. Whether that’s due to Vic Bondi’s gravelly tones geared to critique the societal regime at play, or the considered guitar work aimed to both blast and texturize, or the intense drums rhythms inspired by jazz and dub, there is a depth to the final album that feels like a band testing their parameters, one listen to ‘Every Man For Himself’ and you know you are listening to something special. Familiarity and originality rarely crossover, but in this case they coexist to leave us with a forward thinking punk record that is more interested in shouting it’s emotions from the street, than it is screaming into a vacuum.
