He lives in relative seclusion from the dance music world in the Italian countryside around Florence and is one of the most intriguing producers to work in house and techno for a while. His early musical life as a drummer, plus his extra-musical interests in engineering and electronics has informed a unique, freeform, and very tactile approach to dance music. It's house and techno that doesn't adhere to the usual influences of Detroit, Chicago or Berlin. The album he's made called 'Kila' (the Swahili word for 'everything') was put together using software and hardware that he often modifies, with a mixture of beats and samples punched in like old-school hip hop and synths and effects that give his tracks the feeling of dance music that's been teased apart, smudged and smeared. The music is relaxed and warm but simultaneously abstract and punctuated with ragged detail and gritty disruption. He's been in demand as a producer for a while now and has recently remixed Berghain resident Nick Höppner's latest release. "You hear my music, you get to see how my brain works" he says. The album moves across tempos, from the floaty upbeat disco of 'All Good On Your Side' to the full throttle electro of 'Seat Behind Mirrors' which gently gives away to a looping Burundi vocal. Then down to the old-school hip hop and wonky ooze of 'Mistakes Dealer'. The track 'Fading Above Smoke', is held in place by a repeating drum pattern while synths and samples scrape and wrap themselves around the rhythm. 'Dust Cover' approaches the sound of early Pole, as if it had been described to him but never heard, sending digital grit and glitches across a low-slung bassline and opaque dubbed-out chords. The album finishes on the overloaded climax of 'Fog', which runs awkwardly edited samples over a loose drum tattoo, with enough restraint to keep the track flowing.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/5bfca1ba-6909-4e6c-a083-49b62b8d8642_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727699223
hyper-flux
Hyper Flux

Few artists have the ability to totally seduce over a few spins like Italy’s Herva. What may seem messy at first listen starts to fall into sharper definition and ‘Hyper Flux’ makes a very strong case for being his most seductive and mature record yet. The album has dismantled the broken beats of his early records and drifts, dives and shivers, its beats blended into the haze, everything approached from unusual angles with none of the music sounding entirely digital as it smudges between manipulated live instrumentation and field recordings coupled with synthesis and space - there's a warm heart at the centre of this music. Of making the album he says “I challenged myself to play real instruments. I have a lot of guitars and weird acoustic instruments at my home and also my Dad’s. He's primarily a guitarist and an inventor of instruments, so I have lots of those. Anyway I'm not a pro but I'm able to play drums quite well and I'm not that bad on guitars and bass too, but the weirdo instruments are the best, you are even more free to reinvent how to play them since no one else knows how to.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/5e832672-97a6-4b0a-9c28-a28eb9db3a01_thumbnail_4096.png?v=1727708684
seez
Seez

Herva started to work on Seez right after the release of his last Planet Mu album 'Hyper Flux' back in 2017. He was experimenting with home-made hardware and after the album release wanted to raise the bar, challenging himself to build a point-to-point mixer from scratch. This task took almost a year of intense soldering and forced him to scrap music production. Eventually all this hard work grew into making studio hardware properly and he co-founded a new company making mixers and compressors that work with Eurorack, called Audio Gear Obsession.

On Seez Herva moves away completely from the sample-based music he's most known for and into programming and computational production, which he mixes and compresses with his newly-built hardware tools to give them the life and feeling he requires. There's also an element of randomness in Seez as the music is generative, defined with numbers and ratios from his own software, tuned by ear rather than to set scales, with unexpected outcomes.To make the record, he spent more time digging between the different iterations of each track than coding the programs that generated them. He says "How I make music is kind of weird for most producers, but I like it, and I plan to dig further. You can think of Seez as the alpha version of what I and my system are able to do." The new music still retains Herva's laid back airy feel. Each track is like a small ecosystem of chiming tones, wafting drones and skittering rhythms, hinting at formal patterns and melodies but developing on its own abstract terms.

It feels as if it's the audio equivalent of watching sped-up recordings of a camera capturing different combinations of plants growing, a pleasant and curious experience to let yourself enjoy

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/f8f70516-2a6f-47e8-95fc-c1d083b5fe18_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727839734
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/collections/test_a81d1399_thumbnail_4096_93fe5eee-2353-49cb-94c8-26801b512481.jpg?v=1727699192
