Jesse Justice developed his skills through beat-making before transitioning from the MPC to the Fender Rhodes, consistently bringing a producer’s attention to texture and detail. Mekala Session, raised in Los Angeles’ Leimert Park, studied under legendary drummer Billy Higgins and is also the leader of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra.

Coming from different corners of LA, the three longtime friends formed the group in 2019 almost by accident, initially as a solution to a practical problem: good bassists were hard to find. What was meant to be a one-off performance for the underground series BackbeatLA quickly evolved into an ongoing collaboration, eventually leading them into the studio to record their debut album.

Their self-titled debut EP was shaped by a two-hour jam session and reflects the group’s wide-ranging influences, blending elements of krautrock, classical soul, psychedelic funk, and jazz. Tracks such as “Before” and “Street Food” highlight their technical precision alongside their experimental instincts. The record flows with an improvisational continuity that blurs the boundaries between individual tracks, encouraging listeners to experience it as a complete sequence rather than isolated pieces. Released on their newly founded Preference Records, the EP established them as a promising voice in the Los Angeles DIY and experimental music scene.

“Human Error Club is an experimental jazz trio hailing from sunny Los Angeles, California and whose members consist of jazz drummer Mekala Session along with keyboardists Jesse Justice and Diego Gaeta. With each of the members rising as staples within Los Angeles’s burgeoning DIY music community, this group’s conception is an epiphany within the scene. Their debut self-titled, 8 track EP is a result from a two-hour jam session late last year and is a deep dive into the collective’s expansive taste, as the project pulls from parts of krautrock, classical soul, psychedelic funk, and of course jazz. Tracks like ‘Before’ and ‘Street Food’ showcase the trio’s intricate skill paired with their off-kilter inclinations. The improvisational jam nature of the EP leads to very seamless transition between the different ‘tracks’ of the project, which highly encourages listeners to explore in sequence to get the full effect. It is refreshing debut release from the group and their newly founded Preference Records label that shows a lot of promise for future releases in the near future.” — Earmilk (September 2020)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/ba40362b-1e75-876c-a455-4e2d3750e557.jpg?v=1781263635
