Already, the glut of this singular musician's back catalog has been revived in full, beautifully reissued and repackaged; all of his original, notoriously hard-to-find (well, at least for those of us living on the other side of the Atlantic pond) recordings, most containing additional tracks, are now easily obtainable, and instantly collectable. The ear can become reacquainted with the vast expanse of Schulze music from its earliest beginnings right up and into its modern incarnations, robust with the now-patented lengthy irises, numerous kaleidoscopic events, and still-innovative breadth of tonalities that have become the artist's stock-in-trade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDespite the music's technological carbon dating, there's nary a wasted sequence, motif, or idea throughout; some of Schulze's exploratory beginnings are in fact witnessed in full bloom. This, the third volume culled from the original massive Schulze boxset Ultimate Edition, represents much of the artist in a live setting, featuring many an improvised piece in addition to his site-specific epic undertakings. Trading the dry air of the studio temporarily for the manifest rush of live performance always seemed to evoke great drafts of creativity in Schulze that continues unabated to this day. Certainly, there's no doubt that being able to slowly unwind your ideas in the comfort of the studio and its massive banks of electronic equipment naturally informs the very font of creation. But on stage, Schulze, whether bringing readymade ideas to the party or working it out right there on the fly, seems to channel the latent energy of a live gathering directly into his viscera, the resulting electricity splayed out in to the audience in great zaps of molten synthetic energy. Schulze's work, like most musicians, wasn't always forged in studio isolation; across the wealth of his catalog, many of his grand statements were recorded right on the front lines of many a chosen performance space.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA good portion of this three CD set well-illustrates Schulze working his otherworldly mojo out in the limelight. What is it about the pulsing cascade of interlocked synthesizer keystrokes that make for such enthralling listening? Though his music can scarcely be labeled \"minimalist\",- much of the same mantra-like hypnotism that buttresses his music shares more literal definitions of the style. The two half hour-plus works that nearly inform the totality of CD One (in addition to the zoological sequencer figures that temper \"Well Roared Lion!\") are prime explorations into the metallic voids of mid-70s synthesizers and the science-fictional worlds they evoke. The interstellar winds blowing through \"Alles ist Gut\" could have soundtracked any legion of futurist troopers dispatched by starships; many of Schulze's superbly crafted pulses and arcane tautologies sometimes reincarnate soundcrafters like Louis and Bebe Barron or Oskar Sala. Allowing his pieces to unfold in studious, gradual, supple manners is to get wholly lost in the sound's virtual imaginarium, whether it's sinking deep into darkening, velvety atmospheres or thrust headlong into a pretzel logic of notes.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eConsidering the shelf date of these works, what makes their impact even more extraordinary is that in spite of being created by the instruments of their day, Schulze's deft hand still engenders in them an utter contemporaneity. Now that analogue synthesis and formerly \"ancient\" rhythm programming has been enjoying something of a modern renaissance (by both enthusiast and musician alike), Schulze's expansive sonic architecture is suddenly in vogue. Not that he's a man content to rest on his laurels: recent works such as \"Moonlake\" and 2007's \"Kontinuum\" flex ingrained methodologies to exercise new wrinkles out of his system. At that point in time, we were a band within our own solar moon system, and he was (and is) this monolith travelling in his very own universe... yet the space rendezvous as well as the docking process came effortless and with no holding back from either side.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe most intense yet easiest session of all was definitely \"Sugar mode\". While the other songs were mostly recorded at night, \"Sugar mode\" came about one magical morning as the sunrays filtered through the window blinds... cutting through the enormous amount of cigarette smoke right after a delightful time spent devouring a scrumptious breakfast while listening to J.J. Cale and Herbie Mann.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e17 years down the line the decision Solar Moon is most happy about was a hard one to make at that particular time. George had to mildly force Klaus and Tom to stick to the good old Solar Moon tradition, and that is to lay down\/ record an extended dub version of the original mix at some point the next day. Some of these versions now finally surfaced from our private vaults and hard-drives throughout the last years, hence they are included in this, the \"Ultimate Docking\" re-edition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"Ultimate Docking\" showcases\/ documents a space rendezvous of a different kind right at the very point of reaching the same orbit... which neither of them would have known existed before they even met. He wanted us to start to work together at once. It was the music that was of importance to him.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough Klaus had had no interest in working together before on principle, I knew I could convince him with my music. That was the key to our cooperation. The track was in a sort of Schulze\/Tangerine Dream style with its analogue synthi-bass sequences; it became apparent to both of us that we should approach things with analogue tools first of all. Although it wasn't so easy initially, the musical result finally convinced him. I didn't want to do just a remake of seventies space-music - I intended to meld it with the beats and sounds of today's electronic music, and I think we succeeded.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKlaus Schulze\u003c\/strong\u003e: \"The whole series was a very unpretentious project. Because I had always kept total control with my own albums, I let Pete take it off my hands and could make compromises. From that point of view, it was a real challenge. I never could work with somebody like me, I'd rather do it on my own. The few people I have worked with, like Rainer Bloss, had to have strong egos to prevent themselves from being dominated by me. Namlook once said, my music was often too emotional from his point of view. Namlook is much more rational than me, that's why I always kidded him with the nickname 'the banker' - but this oppositional aspect made it exciting for me. I need people who work contrariwise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWork on 'Dark Side Of The Moog' started without any solid intention and wasn't planned as a series at all. There was only the aim that it didn't sound like 'Schulze' only, so I decided that Namlook had to make the final mix.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe influence Namlook had on Klaus's music in the middle of the nineties should not be taken lightly because although Klaus dearly loved those early-analogue elements from his own music, they had become, to an extent, lost. It was Pete who fortified him to go back to the analogue charm of his early albums and it was Pete who supported him in the modification of his analogue instruments, leading finally to the epoch-making Schulze album from 1996 - \"\u003cem\u003eAre You Sequenced?\u003c\/em\u003e\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFor Namlook, the curiosity of Klaus Schulze and their collaboration on a level playing field of mutual respect was inspiring:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAnd so a legendary series of recordings was born. Menz now lives in Malibu, California where I visited him a couple of years ago. Anyway, this guy calls me and asks if I would compose the score to a porn movie. I said: \"Porn? Nah, I don't do that kind of thing\".\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs it turned out, the director of the movie, Lasse Braun, had already shot it and had used my albums \"Timewind\" [1975] and \"Moondawn\" [1976] as a kind of \"working soundtrack\". This was obvious because the couples in the film were moving in time to my grooves! They were almost done with the film, which was very expensive for a porno - 1 million German Marks, and they were now looking for the final music. First they tried it with normal pop music but that didn't work out. So Lasse said to Manfred \"Let's simply ask Schulze to compose a soundtrack that's similar to \"Moondawn\"!\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI drove down to Manfred's with my, then French girlfriend Blanche. We watched the movie and thought \"Well, it's really not too bad!\" Besides, there wasn't too much dialogue in it so you could let the music run through it all the way. Therefore I didn't need to write two minutes here, three minutes there until the next piece of dialogue or sound effect occurred. I had the opportunity of delivering a genuine composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDirecteur Lass Braun said: \"Just give me the music, one or one and a half hours worth. I'll put the music to the movie and just fade it out in the parts where there shouldn't be any music.\" That fit in with me because that's my method of working anyway. I just had to keep an eye on the timing. More of these strange sounds he used on \"Electric Love-Affair\".\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIs it wrong if I state that Klaus was the first who dared to use noise (as in \"Electric Love-Affair\": a lot of noise and buzz) as stylistic device? The four tracks \"Nightwind\", \"Minuet\", \"Signs of Dawn\", and \"Land der leeren Hauser\" are from a collaboration in the year 1973 between Klaus and a friend at this time, Hans-Jorg Stahlschmidt. These titles were played and recorded at 'delta acustic\" studio in 1973. The proposed group name for Klaus' and Hans-Jorgs collaboration changed between \"Tau\", \"Tao\", and \"Timewind\" (!) Also, a deal with a German record company had already been made, but for reasons unknown today, the album never came out. The music sounds like early 'New Age', but of course this definition wasn't known then. Klaus very own keyboard playing style is already identifiable. Klaus mostly plays the organ, and both played also guitars and bass guitar. The whispering voice on \"Signs of Dawn\" is Klaus. The singing voice on \"Land der leeren Hauser\" is not Klaus. The three shorter titles are the original titles as given on the tape box. In 1973, same more \"avant-garde\" music was done by Klaus, for the radio play \"Das Grobe ldentifikationsspiel (The Big Garne of ldentification)\", a Science-Fiction thriller by Alfred Behrens, it won the award: \"Preis der Kriegsblinden Deutschlands\", and since then it has been regularly repeated on German radio. The tape box says: \"Ballett Titanensee\", and it dates from about 1973.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003elt's mainly, if not only, the Farfisa \"Professional Duo\" organ und an echo device. At least to me it sounds as if it's already the \"Farfisa\" and not the Teisco anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn February 1973 we picked up this new and heavy two-manual organ from Farfisa, for a concert in Paris (which was Klaus' first solo concert).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOf course, there was no ballet ever produced with this music, and therefore, for release we gave it the title \"Titanensee\" and cut the additional word.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"Studies for Organ, Keyboard and Drumset\": recorded 1974 in Berlin, this music was then stored away in another of those dusty tape boxes, where I unearthed it 22 years later, under exactly this title. We hear Klaus play a drum set, a pair of bongos, the Farfisa 'Professional Duo\" organ (which I have just mentioned above), and a second keyboard which could be the 'Solina String Ensemble\"(?). Reverb, echo, phasing and stereo panning were also used by Klaus in his now established way.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\"Memento Mori\" and \"Blaue Stunde\" belong together. Not that the music is the same, but they both mark a change in Klaus' music. The era of \"Timewind\" and \"Moondawn\" is coming. I can still see Klaus, sitting night after night in front of his equipment in the cellar of the house that we had rented in Hambuhren, after our move away from Berlin in August 1975. The recording was probably done in autumn or winter 1975. Partly this is a beautiful and at the same time eerie experiment, und partly it is very soft, silent, subdued music. Both tracks are typical for this \"cellar situation\": Here, Klaus used to play for many hours without a break, this was his normal nightly routine.
