Dextro, having been released through Border Community (James Holden, Nathan Fake, Luke Abbott) and Groenland Records (Neu, Harmonia, Eno), and remixed by Clark (Warp), The Village Orchestra and Dane Law, among others, crafts a distinctive sound of hypnotic patterns, emotive melodies, and ethereal drones. An ambition on ‘Respire’, Mackenzie suggests, “was to try and create a sense of freedom for thought and feeling where,for example, we might consider deeper systems of time or ecology in a more reverent way”. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharacterised by minimalist rhythms on the one hand, and subtle melodic phrases, often on piano or guitar, on the other, Dextro is committed to sonic experimentation. ‘Respire’ involves collaborations with prominent musicians in the Newcastle scene, such as the free form Saxophone of Faye MacCalman (Archipelago, Me Lost Me, The Unthanks) on ‘Forgetting’, the poignant Cello of Tom Merrit Smith on ‘Inseparable’ and ‘Hope Window’, and the brooding Harmonium of Kate Halsall (Galvanize Ensemble) on ‘Inseparable’. It skirts a line between dark heavy riff and floating harmony. However, where the acclaimed \u003ci\u003eStrange Craft\u003c\/i\u003e was a focussed, at times minimal affair, \u003ci\u003eSoil\u003c\/i\u003e looks to break out into a vast filmic landscape. It is a record with a new found confidence in what Rubber Oh is, both thematically and sonically. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA major feature of this record is the arrangements Grant composed throughout for both choir and strings. There is imposed friction; the push and pull between the levity and delicacy of these voices and strings, rubbing up against the grit and distortion of the driving rhythm section - the music is once again built around Grant’s fuzzed-out, hard-panned basses.
