So much so, they have crafted a conceptual EP called 'X', consisting of four songs inspired by the four personalities that make up the award winning television series' judging panel. Guitarist Chris Sharkey explains \"Our intention here is not to mock this programme, the judges and, most importantly, the brave souls that enter this coliseum of contemporary culture. It is a musical response to the show. Some people vote. We make music.\"  Little-known to the average X Factor viewer, trioVD (whose 2009 debut Fill it Up With Ghosts was named both MOJO Magazine's Jazz Album Of The Year) dive through a blundering thrash-metal take on Tulisa, through the celtic-jig-on-steroids come pseudo-power-ballad of Walsh, to the 90s pop peaks and monotone slumps of Barlow and the sensitivity and grace of trip-hop infused Kelly over 22 minutes.  The beauty of trioVD's bizarre concept is the breadth of ways it can be considered. Any charge that 'X' is a gimmick can be dispelled quickly in consideration of the pride and enthusiasm that goes into trioVD's unmistakable compositions and performances. It could be supposed X Factor leaves no room for the brilliance of niche artists that the UK has to offer. With that said, releasing music of any form remains a game of natural selection that artists and labels willingly opt into. In which case, trioVD's 'X' is still a triumph if its association with an enormous televisual brand helps further its exposure to the world. 'X' is to be enjoyed by its fans be and loathed by its critics, like any other record, but overall appreciated as a palpable tribute to a cultural institution that will unquestionably go down in history. As McCallum's inventiveness sits at an intriguing cross-roads between the acoustic and the techno-acoustic, the past twelve months of hard touring have ranged from a McCallum\/laptop duo of beats loops and guitar, to trio\/quartet arrangements, right through to the inclusion of woodwind sections and even a nine piece string section (an expanded version of McCallum's touring string players, The Prism Quartet). The simply titled 'Distilled Live' features several such occurrences, with a 13-piece orchestral ensemble underpinned by the incredible rhythm section of drummer Dave Walsh (a Manchester scene veteran, who like McCallum now tutors at Leeds College Of Music) and bass player Robin Mullarkey (celebrated for his distinctive work with Zero 7 and Jos? James in equal measure). No stranger to big productions, having worked on Cinematic Orchestra's 'Live At The Royal Album Hall' performance and subsequent album, McCallum remains humbled; \"Being able to tour Distilled with such experienced musicians and good friends has been a lot of fun. I was able to adjust the size of the band to suit each individual venue ? from the large ensemble in concert halls, to solo performances by myself in small, intimate club settings.\"  Heralded for the beatific flurries she added to the studio album Distilled, harpist Rachael Gladwin also contributes in equal measure. Despite the practical challenges of touring with an instrument as large as a harp, McCallum quickly realised the value of Rachel's parts in the live context, not just visually but texturally. \"The harp has such a fantastic visual presence on stage, but also blends really well with the guitar. During the tour it has been great to play the written textures with Rachael, as well as to hear her open up in the improvising sections that were left for her to fill\", approves McCallum.  'Distilled Live' opens with a new treat for studio album lovers. \"What Is Beauty?\" samples the soothing intonation of Indian philosopher Krisnamurti, whose teachings have deeply inspired McCallum's music and outlook, resting upon a cradle of strings, driving bass and soaring modes from McCallum's deft guitar playing. However, two things make City stand out from his previous work. Stuart McCallum's music has always thrived in that beautiful space where genres blur. With a wide range of influences from Machinedrum, Lau and Martin Simpson to Debussy, Taylor McFerrin and Burial, it's not difficult to see how this has come about. His 2011 Naim debut, Distilled, was a series of beautiful instrumental soundscapes and glorious melodies that owed as much to dance music as it did to jazz. Since then he has been busy with a wide range of other projects, including several collaborations with British artist Linder, scoring music for the Northern Ballet and working in an acoustic duo setting with Mike Walker.  Spaven has played with a host of artists, including 4hero, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Flying Lotus, Gregory Porter, Jos? James and Robert Mitchell. His production style lies somewhere between the realms jazz and electronica and subtly bridges the gap between these two worlds using grooves that blend contemporary jazz and bass-heavy downtempo electronics. Trichotomy are pianist Sean Foran, percussionist John Parker and double bassist Patrick Marchisella. Inspired by a diverse range of influences from Aphex Twin to Vijay Iyer, and John Zorn to Tord Gustavsen, Trichotomy's music combines a dense rhythmic focus with a refined melodic clarity. On their brilliant new album Fact Finding Mission the core trio is joined by Tunji Beier on percussion, Linsey Pollak on reeds, and guitarist James Muller allowing the band to draw on influences including elements from the European and Indian Folk traditions.   Fact Finding Mission shines with a bright vitality and an unbridled joy in music making. In many ways it's the band's most expansive recording but also one that really celebrates the unity of a band that have been playing together for 13 years. For Foran it's the result in shifts in the lives of the band's members:  \"It's a big time of shift in our lives, there's children in the lives of two of us (myself and John) and Pat the bass player is back studying - this time pure mathematics. The mood is one of positivity, and a sense of fun, happiness, and a general love of playing music together\". The album also captures what feels like a creative peak. 2012 has been completely about writing and recording new music. Trichotomy have worked with a multitude of different collaborators including DVA - a duo of percussion and reeds, a string quartet, a video artist and a jazz guitarist. These collaborations have inspired the band to write in new ways, be inspired by different artists and try new concepts for the trio and the way they interact with other musicians.   The album opens with the upbeat and joyful Strom (meaning stream, current or flow), the catchy The Blank Canvas Part 1 features guitarist James Muller and enhances the albums sense of journey and movement as we set out on our Fact Finding Mission with the trio. The delicate, captivating Lullaby was written by Parker for his sons. The title track is the most abstract work on the album and utilizes samples, bowed distorted bass, a range of Chinese gongs and other sounds to achieve its chaotic effect. The second track on the album to be inspired by the band's children, the playful Song For EV, was written for Foran's daughter and has a delightful rhythmic suppleness. On Civil Unrest (featuring guitarist James Muller and percussionist Tunji Beier) angular melodies and abstract harmonies meld with spacious free improvisations. While The Brook is all about rhythm; contrasting the idea of a dark intense bass groove with a delicate sparse melody. The captivating, rhythmic The Blank Canvas Part 2 transports us through to the beautiful Brick By Brick, which features DVA (Tunji Beier on percussion and Linsey Pollak on reeds) and draws on Eastern European folk melodies alongside modern jazz harmonic movements and freely improvised elements. Pollak's reeds weave in and out of the trio sounds with Beier's percussion adding another layer of rhythmic complexity. Dense, but melodically clear, it's a beautiful closer to the album with its sense of melodic finality and earthy folk ideas and it's this blend of earthy rhythms, beautiful melodies and the freedom of jazz that makes Trichotomy's Fact Finding Mission so worth joining!
