Between 1979 and 1982, Nick Blinko and Martin Cooper’s Outer Himmalayan Records released 7-inches by three short-lived bands – The Magits, Soft Drinks, and S-Haters – who would nonetheless cast a massive shadow on the UK’s burgeoning post-punk \/ anarcho punk scene. Outer Himmalayan Presents collects all of the music found on those original records, along with rare and unreleased tracks by all three bands. It’s a snapshot of a period of frenzied creativity by some of the UK’s most thrilling experimental punks. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBefore Blinko went on to found the essential anarcho band Rudimentary Peni, whose storied body of work also appeared on Outer Himmalayan, he and label co-founder Cooper were The Magits. The lone release by the minimal synth-and-vocals duo, Fully Coherent, was the inaugural release on Outer Himmalayan — and, in fact, Blinko and Cooper’s impetus for starting the label. The four tracks on \u003ci\u003eFully Coherent\u003c\/i\u003e are short, sharp bursts, comprising a total of four minutes. Here, they’re presented alongside the five-and-a-half minute \u003ci\u003eA Pawn in the Game\u003c\/i\u003e, a song that sees Blinko and Cooper get truly weird with the extra space the longer runtime afforded them. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe next release on Outer Himmalayan was S-Haters’ \u003ci\u003eDeath of a Vampire\u003c\/i\u003e 7\", which the quartet quickly followed with Stories as Cold as the Irish Sea. The band was recognizably a deathrock act, their gothic punk in the same lineage as Joy Division and PIL’s \u003ci\u003eMetal Box\u003c\/i\u003e, but it showed the same sonic adventurousness that characterized the rest of Outer Himalayan’s output. \u003ci\u003e1980\u003c\/i\u003e, an oddity taken from the rare \u003ci\u003eAnother Bouquet on the Grave of Free Enterprise\u003c\/i\u003e cassette comp, shows the most experimental flourish, with dueling male\/female vocals and a prominent acoustic guitar. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe final Outer Himmalayan release before it became strictly a Rudimentary Peni label was Soft Drinks’ \u003ci\u003ePopstars in Their Pyjamas\u003c\/i\u003e 7\". \u003ci\u003ePopstars\u003c\/i\u003e ended up being the tongue-in-cheek synth-punk trio’s only release before their breakup, though they would also record \u003ci\u003eDangers of Drink\u003c\/i\u003e, for the \u003ci\u003eBouquet of Barbed Wire\u003c\/i\u003e comp and included here, as well as the one-off track \u003ci\u003eMisconception\u003c\/i\u003e, previously unreleased but now available exclusively on Outer Himmalayan Presents. Whamm! were struggling to provide the funds to record an album, the songs were too good not to commit to a full 12’ set, so the Direct Hits pooled their limited resources and self financed a very cheap one day recording session in a tiny studio in Tooting, South London called Broadway Sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEarly on the morning of August 12th 1982 the band, comprising of Colin Swan, Geno Buckmaster, Brian Grover and their trusty roadie ‘Robbo’ assembled at the tiny studio to begin recording as many of their songs as they could get down on tape for the tiny budget they had scraped together. As most of the songs were already well rehearsed thanks to the band’s busy live schedule, the recording of the first nine songs on this disc were finished by mid afternoon without any problems. Throughout the late afternoon and early evening the band toiled over scant overdubs with limited keyboard facilities and a distinct lack of musical ability. The recordings immediately came to life however, when Colin Swan and Geno Buckmaster’s stage-honed tight harmonies were added, there was no time for vocal overdubs, and the mixing was completed by midnight. Tired and worn out, the band ventured out into the cold night air happy with the days work, clutching the precious reel to reel tape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo weeks later the band came back with a friend producing, and recorded the three final tracks featured on this album which have a more rounded slightly less raw sound. All three were completed in an afternoon. Almost two years later they re-recorded some of these songs, and along with a handful of new songs from the pen of Buckmaster and Swan, recorded their \u003ci\u003eBlow Up \u003c\/i\u003edebut album at Rendezvous Studios in Sydenham, South East London, released on Whaam! Records in August 1984.\u003cbr\u003eSo what you have here are the roots of some of these great songs.
