Add in his role as co-owner of label Sooper Records, as well as recent tours with Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, and black midi, and it’s an overwhelming schedule. However, his latest album, Please Have A Seat, is the result of a much- needed pause.

“I realized I never take time to just sit and take in where I’m at,” says Nnadmi. “It’s just nice to not be on ‘Go, Go, Go!’ mode, and reevaluate where I wanted to go musically.” This period of reflection allowed him to take stock of his life and his relationships. “I wanted to be present,” he says. “Each song came from a moment of clarity.” Please Have A Seat serves as an invitation to listen. It’s a request to sit down, be present, and take in a moment. With this quiet introspection, Nnadmi found inspiration in silence and nuance.

While making the record, he decided to stretch the limits of his pop songwriting: every track had to be hummable. Though he’s written earworms throughout his career from playing in bands in Chicago’s DIY community or releasing goofy raps as Nnamdi’s Sooper Dooper Secret Side Project, here, his shapeshifting hooks are undeniable. Each of the album’s fourteen songs, which Nnadmi wrote, produced, and performed entirely himself, are relentlessly replayable, careening into unexpected and disorienting places. Whether under his own name or one of the many bands he’s spent time in, either as a full-on member or merely a touring partner, there’s been an endless stream of music that Nnadmi has had his hands in. Pair that with the fact he co-owns his label, Sooper Records (Kaina, Sen Morimoto), and it’d be easy to wonder how he finds time to do anything other than make music.

On Brat, the follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed Drool, Nnamdi removes the veil to show just how much effort and energy it takes to work at such a high level without any breaks. Pop Matters said that “Nnamdï's sounds are a testament to the continual melting away of genre distinctions in the current era of (particularly Black) music.” His extensive catalog includes covers significant ground in hip-hop, pop, rock, punk, orchestral, and experimental music. In 2021, NNAMDÏ expanded his freewheeling sonic explorations for an entrée into the world of pop-infused dance and electronica with the release of the Are You Happy EP on November 12, 2021. Notably, Are You Happy is the only NNAMDÏ project to date that he did not produce, perform, and record by himself. To the surprise of his fans, NNAMDÏ bucked that self-imposed precedent to work with Chicago producer Lynyn. Lynyn is the alias of composer Conor Mackey, NNAMDÏ’s longtime bandmate in the jazz-fusion quintet Monobody. Are You Happy released shortly before Lynyn’s 2022 debut electronic LP lexicon (Sooper Records), which went on to garner significant acclaim. DJ Magazine said that “lexicon is likely to set him apart as one of IDM's next visionaries”. Lynyn produced Are You Happy in its entirety, drawing on his extensive vocabulary of electronic music and masterful production chops to create the dense, finely detailed compositions at the core of the project. The songs on Are You Happy integrate IDM, drum and bass, dub, and a kitchen-sink of electronic genres resulting in one of the freshest and most singularly unique projects in NNAMDÏ’s extensive and shape-shifting catalog. In a review of the project, PASTE magazine captured the essence of Are You Happy: “NNAMDÏ is one of Chicago’s finest musical innovators, blending together almost any sounds you can think of on the blank slate of hip-hop… With silky vocals that keep one foot in R&B and the other in indie pop, NNAMDÏ gets pushed to his artistic limits over Lynyn’s jittery breakbeats and footwork firmly rooted in their city. Written and recorded in three days during the tumultuous summer of 2020, the Black Plight EP is Chicago multi-instrumentalist NNAMDÏ’s response to the police murder of George Floyd and the subsequent ignition of protests and demands for racial justice that swept the globe. In three explosive post-punk tracks, NNAMDÏ leans into the heavier noise-rock tendencies of his musical language to explore fundamental political questions of justice for Black Lives in “My life” (“My life / What’s it worth to you?”); his mounting anger against racist police violence in “Rage” (“They kill us dead in the street / Outside so everyone sees / They stand and watch while we bleed / Black with a capital B”); and an internalization and reverberation of a call to action in “Heartless” (“Can’t sit around and wait for something to change”). The EP was Released as a Digital-only project exclusive to Bandcamp on Friday June 5, 2020 in order to raise money for racial justice organizations and community members in immediate need of financial support. It went on to become the Best-Selling album on that Bandcamp Friday, raising over $10,000.00 in 24-hours. The Chicago Tribune named NNAMDÏ Chicagoan of the Year in 2020, citing—amongst other things— his public leadership role in raising money for racial justice movements in his hometown of Chicago via the Black Plight EP. NNAMDI wrote, performed, and recorded the Black Plight EP by himself in 3 days. Recent tours with Wilco, Black Midi, Sleater-Kinney, and Jeff Rosenstock.
