The legendary Tavares Brothers perform trk. 3 while George Soule leads the way on trk. 4 with his #35 R\u0026amp;B hit “Get Involved”. Bettye Swann from Shreveport, Louisiana, delivers a heartrending performance on “My Heart Is Closed...” (trk. 5), her debut recording for Capitol in 1968. Corey Blake (trk. 6) and Freddie Terrell (trk. 9) are perhaps the most in demand three-figure 45s but no less brilliant are the more accessible Marian Love (trk. 14) and the fabulous C. M. Barbara Randolph only released two singles for Motown on their Soul imprint. Perhaps Berry Gordy couldn’t see past her acting career? It was also Passion Music that gave Jackie, posthumously, his only #1 pop hit with a reissue of “Reet Petite” in 1986. It Only Happens When I look At You is the perfect feel-good floorfiller from the perfect soul vocalist. The song was originally recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1975 for her Atlantic album ‘You’, but it is Jackie’s more upbeat version that captured the Northern Soul hearts. It was released on UK Brunswick in 1977 and was to be Jackie’s final 45. And its popularity has never gone away, hence its current price tag of £300-400. Other notable covers include Sonny \u0026amp; Cher, the Bubblegum pop group Salt Water Taffy and, in 1975, John Holt’s reggae version. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eLost Summer Love\u003c\/i\u003e was originally recorded in 1964 by U.S. actress Shelley Fabares, known for her long-running role as Mary Stone in the sitcom ‘The Donna Reed Show’ and as Elvis Presley’s leading lady in \u003ci\u003eGirl Happy, Spinout and Clambake\u003c\/i\u003e. She also scored a No.1 pop hit in 1962 with the teen anthem Johnny Angel. But, as with our ‘A-side’, it was reborn as a Northern Soul classic when Pye Records picked the song up in 1965 and recorded it on their latest signing, teenager Lorraine Silber. It achieved a staggering £14,000 finishing price and further cemented the legendary status of both record and artist. In 1969 Banks signed to the Volt record label and recorded one album, \u003ci\u003eHere To Stay\u003c\/i\u003e, and two singles. Here is his classy crossover 45 \u003ci\u003eI’m The One Who Loves You\u003c\/i\u003e in glorious stereo coupled with the album-only cut \u003ci\u003eForgive Me\u003c\/i\u003e available for the very first time on 7-inch single. He wrote \u003ci\u003eKeep On Running\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eSomebody Help Me\u003c\/i\u003e for the British R\u0026amp;B band The Spencer Davis Group, both of which went to No.1 on the U.K. pop charts. \u003ci\u003eI Feel So Bad\u003c\/i\u003e was released on the distinctive ‘red and white’ Island logo in 1967 and was adopted by the burgeoning U.K. underground soul scene, most notably at the Twisted Wheel club in Manchester. It has been played on the ever evolving Northern Soul scene ever since and, a half-century on, commands a price tag of £700+ for a mint original. Fortunately our devastingly good-looking “official” reissue can be bought for a more modest sum.
