Brian Eno - then a member of Roxy Music, came to the studio to add synth to the same sessions. Fripp and Eno found common cause. The 21 minutes piece of music that resulted, 'The Heavenly Music Corporation' became one of the most significant and influential pieces of electronic music ever recorded. The other track on the album 'Swastika Girls' was not recorded until over a year later in august 1973 - the track title inspired by a picture of girls wearing a swastika and little else that was pinned to the console. Also pinned to the console was a piece of paper with the words 'No Pussyfooting' - Fripp's reminder to both musicians that they should not compromise what they felt to be right or be deterred by the hostility to the project shown by management and record label alike. (there was talk of Fripp leading Eno into 'un-commercial territory'). The album was released in November 1973 and went on to sell over 100,000 copies. Ian McDonald's Mellotron is the dominant instrument, along with his saxes and Fripp's guitar, making this a somewhat different-sounding record from everything else they ever did. And even though that Mellotron sound is muted and toned down compared to their concert work of the era (e.g., Epitaph), it is still fierce and overpowering, on an album highlighted by strong songwriting (most of it filled with dark and doom-laden visions), the strongest singing of Greg Lake's entire career, and Fripp's guitar playing that strangely mixed elegant classical, Hendrix-like rock explosions, and jazz noodling. Built in 1860, the church had historically been home to many congregations but in more recent years had become the venue for groups such as the Black Panthers, Gay Men’s Health Crisis and numerous arts organisations.

The series of Frippertronics concerts were held in aid of a Soho-based theatre group and they find the guitarist using his technique of slowly building the music from the ground up, step by step. It’s an approach which demonstrates how the addition or subtraction of a single note can change the entire mood of a piece as we move in the space of a few bars from an atmosphere of pensive anticipation to one of yearning hope. In an interview with the Melody Maker published just weeks before these concerts, Fripp was asked why he continued to perform Frippertronics concerts. “It gives me a way of working with intimate contact with members of an audience...It's almost an excuse to put me in a situation where one has the audience, performer and music, and in a certain kind of way something remarkable can happen. And that has happened to me, and it's not possible in a group...Frippertronics is the most enjoyable means of playing I've ever found.”

The Washington Square Church performances represent some of the finest recorded examples of the Frippertronics series. Unlike other such recordings where the loops are on tape in the DGM archive but the solos require painstaking matching of existing audience recordings and bootlegs to those loops to complete the picture, the solos for these shows were actually recorded but not labelled as to which solos matched which loops. The matched pairs only became possible when DGM audio engineer Alex R. Mundy realised that the loops had been picked up, at microscopic audio levels, by the guitar pick-ups playing the solos, allowing for identification. David Singleton was then able to mix and produce the resulting audio.

The music played more than rewards such efforts as, culled from the shows, (more complete versions appear on the “Exposures” boxed set), Fripp appears to explore every sonic avenue available to him as a guitar player – mesmerising loops, overlaid with beautiful solos, fast running ‘Frame by Frame’ style lines against a looped background, powerful ‘Scary Monsters’ type guitar noises and more besides.

This is the Frippertronics album that should have come out in 1982. In the USA Crimson joined the Horde tour for 1995 - among a floating lineup that included Lenny Kravitz, The Black Crowes and Ziggy Marley. 'Thrak' and its accompanying tours managed the task of appealing to older Crimson fans, while allowing the band to develop a whole new audience - perhaps unsurprisingly, as many of the musical ideas initially formulated by Crimson lineups of the 70s & 80s had been absorbed, extended and re-presented in a new light by bands directly influenced by earlier Crimson albums and performances. The first pressing run of this edition also contains bonus MP3 codes giving access to a download of a transfer of an original 1975 pressing. For a band that favoured the presentation and honing of material in live performance prior to studio recording, it was inevitable that with the increasing portability of quality recording machines, the concert performance would, in effect, become the basis of the subsequent studio recordings. With 'Starless and Bible Black' King Crimson, reduced to a quartet following the departure of percussionist Jamie Muir, took that step. Half of the album was sourced from live gigs - much of it from a concert at the Amsterdam Concertegebouw in November 1973. (The complete concert was subsequently issued as 'The Nightwatch' album and fully detailed on 2014's 'Starless' boxed set.) While some of the material was developed or overdubbed in the studio, other tracks were presented exactly as per the concert setting with the audience applause removed. With the band's burgeoning live reputation, increased tour schedule and commitment to improvisation, the use of the live material led to the album being the most accurate representation to date of the lineup's uniquely powerful live sets. Side 2 of the original vinyl in particular, allowed the band to present a pair of lengthy tracks - the title track drawn directly from the Amsterdam concert and 'Fracture' with additional studio overdubs - that demonstrated the manner in which live improvisations were forming the foundations for much of their material. 'Starless and Bible Black' demanded the attention and concentration of the listener. Crimson's audience responded to the challenge, making it a much loved album by the band. As with the other recordings by the mid-1970s lineup, the intervening years have seen the album's reputation increase among fans & musicians alike, while the then unusual approach to using live performances as core elements of subsequent studio recordings has become increasingly commonplace.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/4dcbf614-9e84-4624-8dd9-86db795a6ae3_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727654506
the-power-to-believe
The Power to Believe

The Power to Believe features in its 2019 expanded master on sides one to three, including the Sus-tayn-Z suite.
