CD1: Musica Urbana - one of the most impressive albums of its time; it’s unique contribution was to to infuse the languages of rock, jazz and formal composition with flamenco, the Spanish folk tradition and the sensibility of national composers, such as Manuel de Falla and Isaac Albéniz – and then to weave all these elements into a uniquely Spanish iteration of experimental rock. CD2: Joan Albert I Felui Gasul, released a year later by Musica Urbana’s keyboardist Joan Albert Amargos and flamenco virtuoso Feliu Gasul. Again, it is marked by a seamless fusion of styles combined with a lightly-worn intensity and high degree of musical intelligence. With edge-of-the-seat playing and a mixture of compositional and improvisational flexibility, there’s also a lightness and sense of here that conceals the fiendish complexity of the compositions. Joan Albert plays acoustic piano, fender electric and clavinet, Jaume Cortadellus adds some perfectly judged flute on one of the tracks and the whole of Musica Urbana appear on another. Both are beautifully recorded and mixed - with an unusually clear, strong, sound and exquisite separation. Together they capture an explosive cultural moment - which rapidly faded as music industry values regained control. CD3: Trio Altisent, presents for the first time recordings by Amargos, Gasul and Cortadellus made in 1984. Amargos and Gasul went on to become respected composers, Benavent went on to work with Paco de Lucia, Chick Corea and Miles Davis. They all worked with Maria del Mar Bonet. This is Rer's 12th to date - and the Necks 18th. While most ensembles are driven by personalities, the Necks are powered by an idea. A very large and simple idea - which now seems completely obvious.... but only because the Necks thought of it and made it work. Now their pleasure (and ours) is sequentially to re-imagine and explore that idea - the prime directive of which seems to be to be that each unfolding step and every passing detail of any performance be allowed to evolve organically out of the musical conditions established at its moment of departure. In other words, we are in the territory of chaos and catastrophe theory; of hurricanes and butterfly wings... And, since one can never step into the same river twice, each beginning has led to wildly unpredictable and variant outcomes; imperceptibly: you never hear the changes until somehow they have already happened. "We end up", Lloyd Swanton writes, "in a very different place from whatever our initial notion ... had been." In the case of Vertigo, we are dropped straight into an almost Feldmanesque musical universe, in which sounds - seemingly disconnected - are already there; creating space rather than inhabiting it. Then, without trying, they mutate. Not mechanically and not according to any pre-determined process - because it's always clear that what we hear is being played by human beings; that it's music. A special kind of music that is not pushy or demanding or demonstrative, but rather co-operative, spatial, ambiguous. After Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd were casting around for a new concept for their next release. They made a start and then moved on to Wish You Were Here. Now William Hayter and Barry Lamb - who brought you Miniatures 2020 - have decided to give it another go, commissioning a wide range of artists to scour their houses for sounds and organise them into compositions. Some of these pieces work because you can recognise the sources, others because you can't. And while many participants assemble small orchestras of objects, a few stick to just one thing (water or an egg-slicer) - and always the objects are meticulously listed. The sound palette is broad and unusual - and carefully crafted. Stevan works with layers, timbral drift and fiendish rhythmic unisono; isn't afraid of melodic material and, when necessary, is happy to draw on sixties-era contemporary music (Nancarrow, Ligeti) or the wilder reaches of rock. For the most part, though, this composition offers a unfamiliar sonic landscape rich with fleeting references that are integrated seamlessly into a clear but deep musical architecture. Like Trout Mask Replica or Song Cycle - it may take a little getting used to but it rewards repeated listening. Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer was born in Vojvodina, ex-Yugoslavia, in 1963. The album features acclaimed violinist Ric Sanders (Fairport Convention, Soft Machine, The Albion Band, Stomu Yamash’ta’s Red Buddha Theatre), whose career includes work with Rick Wakeman, Robert Plant, Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, Pentangle and John Etheridge. The Ashby/Lamb partnership spans 50 years, with origins in the UK cassette culture scene under names including Frenzid Melon, the insane picnic and Ermin Grud, before evolving through decades of independent work across experimental, post-punk and progressive music. Their collaborations include Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd, The Clash), Jasun Martz (Frank Zappa, Michael Jackson), Tor Cesay (Mongrel, Flying Lotus, Arrested Development), Wavis O’Shave and Alessandro Monti (Unfolk). They have also contributed to major retrospective projectsincluding the 40th anniversary celebration of Morgan Fisher's Miniatures and the 50th anniversary honouring of the mythical abandoned Pink Floyd album Household Objects. Occasional member Georgia Lamb contributes vocals that bring an ethereal counterpoint to Barry Lamb’s raw, unhinged delivery, adding a distinctive dynamic to the work. Working from a fiercely independent ethos, Two Headed Emperor draw on a wide palette of influences ranging from progressive rock, psychedelic folk, post punk and experimental elements without settling into any single category, shaped by a wabi-sabi sensibility— embracing imperfection, transience and the incomplete. The album reflects the tension between everyday life and deeper realities, balancing fragmentation with moments of clarity.

Something new under the sun? This is certainly that. The sounds: instrumental, crisp, sometimes insectile; organic but not always recognizable - the music: precise, changeable, strongly rhythmical, vaguely Beefheartian and satisfyingly asymmetrical. In short, familiar enough to get on with but essentially working out of a world of its own creation; at once highly organized and recognizably musical. When confronted with something intriguing but unknown in the days of record shops and browsing, one would first check the instrumentation: in this case: Danelectro electric guitar, electro-acoustic guitar, acoustic guitar, kala u-bass, stylophone gen-x-i, saxocorder (alto recorder with saxophone mouthpiece), electrolux horn, muji bed bassdrum, fan heater, claps, shaker, bell stick brushed worktop, cow wall tent, cardboard box, chanter, vox.
