When the Country blues was first recorded in the mid-1920s, it was not only played and appreciated by African-Americans but also by white performers and audiences alike. During this time, it was common practice for record companies to separate the music of the American South into two categories: the 'race' series, aimed at a black audience; and the 'hillbilly' series, aimed at white audiences. This division along racial lines was in fact superficial, as black and white musicians shared much with respect to genre and repertoire and the separation of the two on commercial recordings grew out of the prejudices of record companies. This “do it yourself” approach to their instrument-making gained immense popularity in America during the 1920s and early 1930s, and became closely linked to the development of the blues. The jug could be earthenware or glass and was played by buzzing one’s lips into its mouth from about an inch away, thus creating a sound somewhere between that of a tuba or trombone. The swoop sounds that could be made gave the impression of sliding notes and a good player could get two octaves out of a good-sized jug. Incorporating all manner of homemade instruments, early jug bands were typically made up of African-American vaudeville and medicine show musicians and played a mixture of blues, ragtime and jazz music with a strong backbeat. Not only was Memphis a centre for Delta blues during the late 1920s but it was also the home of many of the great jug bands including Will Shade’s Memphis Jug Band and Gus Cannon’s Jug Stompers. These bands developed out of the country blues and songster traditions and created an upbeat and comic sound perfectly suited to entertaining crowds, and far removed from the raw sound of the Delta blues. This allowed them to play all manner of places from street corners to vaudeville stages and saloons. The Memphis Jug Band recorded under several different names for various labels including the Picaninny Jug Band, the Carolina Peanut Boys and the Memphis Sheiks and produced more sides than any other pre-war jug band including the featured classic “Stealin’, Stealin’” which was subsequently recorded by the Grateful Dead. Often referred to as a training ground for musicians, many fine performers passed through the ranks of the Memphis Jug Band including Memphis Minnie who is accompanied here by her own jug band on Grandpa And Grandma Blues. Although Memphis became synonymous with the jug band craze the first jug bands to record were in Louisville, where their sound was much more rooted in the jazz influences that came by riverboat from New Orleans, and used the jug more for its novelty value. Clifford Hayes from Kentucky was a multi-instrumentalist and bandleader who was not only the first to record with a jug band (the Old Southern Jug Band) in 1923, but also teamed up with the legendary Jimmie Rodgers on the featured “My Good Gal’s Gone Blues”. Sometimes a stovepipe (usually a section of tin pipe, 3” or 4” in diameter) was played in much the same manner as a jug, perfectly demonstrated by the aptly named Stovepipe No. 1 aka Sam Jones who recorded with King David’s Jug Band and created a distinctive deep guttural jug sound with his stovepipe. Originally billing himself as Daddy Stovepipe he probably didn’t know of the existence of the more famous Maxwell Street one-man band also known as “Daddy Stovepipe”, aka Johnny Watson until he first went to record in 1924. His namesake here performs the stomping masterpiece The Spasm with his wife, singer and jug player Mississippi Sarah, with their humorous and unique banter creating a good-time feel in true jug band spirit. Further highlights include the sublime slide guitar playing of blues legend Tampa Red who formed his own Hokum Jug Band, as well as the frenzied and voice-like harp of Jaybird Coleman, the virtuoso harmonica player of the Birmingham Jug Band. Although other well-known blues performers embraced the jug-band craze, by the mid-1930s it had run its course due to a combination of the depression and the devastating effect of radio on record sales. This collection goes to show how during its heyday this not-often-talked-about genre was a highly influential and most vibrant of musical styles in the history of the blues.

LP - Limited Edition Vinyl with Download with Extra Music.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/ff99c50b-6fb3-4ebc-afd1-e7c1c8709bf7_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726960647
rough-guide-to-the-music-of-palestine
Rough Guide to the Music of Palestine

Palestine is a beautiful ancient land of faith where conflict appears to overshadow its creative voices. In the golden era of Peru's record and radio industry, musicians, composers and producers created their own variants of these foreign-born genres, most frequently to satisfy and attract their dancing public (often defined by race/class divisions) with something they could recognize and call their own. Using these imported styles as building blocks they put their personal spin on what was generally termed (in the case of Latin dance music) música tropical bailable. Home-grown ingredients in the form of dances, melodies, and instrumentation from the array of Peru's indigenous peoples (such as the huayno) as well as African and Spanish-influenced música criolla, Spanish flamenco and Brazilian carimbó, samba and baião all swirled together in the melting pot with imported tropical Afro-Caribbean or North American / European pop sounds to create an ambiance as competitive, creative, sophisticated and diverse as anywhere else at the time. They also started listening more to European jazz: a fascinating 'full-circle' effect, because earl twentieth century choro jazz was strongly influenced by European music in template if not in tempo.The large majority of players on this compilation are under 30 years old, most from São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro. As the Beat Generation of Burroughs, Kerouac and Ginsberg morphed into an LSD culture inspired by the writings of Timothy Leary and Aldous Huxley, bands like the Holy Modal Rounders and the Incredible String Band opened their minds not only to hallucinogens but to the sounds of Indian drones and middle-eastern musical modes. However, while psychedelia appeared to have flatlined in Europe and the USA, its pulse remained perfectly healthy in other parts of the world. African bands layered fuzztone guitars over highlife beats and Indian sitarists responded to the appropriation of their instrument by creating totally new soundscapes. In parts of Latin America counter-culture politics went hand in glove with musical exploration while Cambodian pop artists borrowed the psychedelic trappings of their American counterparts. This Rough Guide reflects many aspects of the global psychedelic sphere, not only from the sixties, but continuing through the decades and on into the 21st century. Latin America heads up nine of the tracks on this collection. The 1960s and 1970s were typified by activist rebellion and bands of the day communicated their passion with heavy reverb and re-imagined trad percussion gone west. Skipping across the Atlantic we land in Africa. The 1960s and 1970s here were defined by clashing sensibilities and political optimism. Celestine Ukwu's classic track mixes highlife with pedal steel guitar. Tanzanian group Milmani Park Orchestra are heard on horn-heavy 'Taxi Driver'. Victor Uwaifo's seminal 1966 'Guitar Boy' tops off the mix. During the 1970s drug culture wasn't flooding India's shores but the country was undergoing its own social transformation and a DIY garage band scene evolved. Ananda Shankar's 'Dancing Drums' is a cult classic from this era. The Virji Shah brothers appear under their duo moniker Kalyanji - Anandji on the wonderfully bizarre 'Cabaret Dance Music'. Cambodia's psychedelic archive was almost eradicated during the time of the Khmer Rouge but the sounds live on via legendary balladeer Ros Serysothea and Yos Olarang's 'Cyclo'.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/ba881795-9f28-4ec2-aab3-dd1eae88e9c7_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726961250
the-rough-guide-to-the-music-of-scandanavia
The Rough Guide to the Music of Scandanavia

This is a 22-track sampler of the new music trends in Scandinavia from folk to classical to pop and avant-garde across seven countries in the region. The two vocalists, along with Sin Sisamouth, were figureheads of the epochal 1960-1970s Cambodian music scene which reinvented American rock and roll in a way wonderfully its own. The Khmer Rouge's systematic dismantling of Cambodian culture was so successful that LP's from this era have only rarely survived either sequestered away by residents or smuggled out of the country with those who left. Under Pol Pot's orders, the despot's troops literally gathered up and burned every book, painting, film reel and vinyl record they could find. A history purposefully extinguished. The musicians too met grizzly end: from what we can tell Ros Seresyothea died of malnutrition in a work camp and Pan Ron mysteriously disappeared, mostly likely one of over a million people brutally murdered in 'The Killing Fields' genocide.

Over the last two decades years, spirit-guided by Southern California-based band Dengue Fever, interest in vintage Cambodian sounds has spiked. A new wave of DJs, collectors and interpreters now pour over original cuts, the rarer the better, sliding them into their mixes, lovingly remastering their chalky tones and performing the music anew. This handpicked compilation is one of few stacking the shelves that features original re-issues alongside the finest re-workings by Dengue Fever themselves.

Ros Seresyothea opens the album with her soaring voice, it is said she rarely needed a microphone so powerful was her projection. At the height of her career in the late 1960s to 1970s, Seresyothea's popularity was so great she even ventured into film, starring as an actress. Then King Norodom Sihanouk even gave her the newly created title of 'Golden Voice of the Royal Capital', listening to her ? you can hear why.

Cambodia's other great female luminary Pan Ron appears on each side of this vinyl. A prolific songwriter and recording artist, she often collaborated with the 'Elvis of Cambodia' Sin Sisamouth. Like her contemporaries, Pan Ron's sound embodies the Western rock and roll that would have been picked up from the US Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War. The airwaves spread these sounds fast and thick and soon the generation's musicians were melting the music of their Cambodian culture with that of The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Santana.

Dengue Fever give us three tracks on this record. The unique band began in the late 1990s when keyboardist Ethan Holtzmann undertook a six-month trek through Southeast Asia. On return to Los Angeles he soon founded a band along with his brother and saxophonist David Ralick, drummer Paul Dreux Smith and bassist Senon Williams. Cambodian-born Cali-living vocalist Chhom Nimol soon joined the line-up and soon Dengue Fever's music was gaining cult status. Their sound captures the multi-faceted history of Khmer rock or Cambodian garage rock as it has come to be known.

With the inclusion of contemporary Cambodian band Dub Addiction this Rough Guide's joins the dots from the country's vintage rock days to today's underground scene. Founded in May 2011, Phnom Penh's Dub Addiction create deep ambient worlds with Cambodian vocals led by DJ Khala and beats produced by Prof Kinski. Buddy Holly's influence was as profound and eternal as his career was brief and tragic. Over little more than two years between 1956 and 1958, he wrote and recorded some of the most perfect rock'n'roll records of all time. Half a dozen years later when the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show, the first question John Lennon asked was, 'Is this the stage Buddy Holly played on?' Born Charles Hardin Holley in Lubbock, Texas on September 7, 1936, he began singing country and bluegrass as a duet with his childhood friend Bob Montgomery. But all that changed when he heard Elvis Presley for the first time. He borrowed the money for a Fender Stratocaster and his recording career began in early 1956 when he travelled to Nashville to cut several sides for Decca. Released under the name Buddy Holly after the label had misspelt his name, from those sessions 'Blue Days, Black Nights', 'Love Me', 'Modern Don Juan' and 'You Are My One Desire' are included here.
When these early releases failed to chart and his contract was not renewed, he teamed up with producer Norman Petty at his studio in Clovis, New Mexico, where they cut a demo of That'll be The Day. After the tape had been sent to Brunswick, the label was so impressed they didn't bother re-cutting the song but released the demo as a single in May 1957. It took Holly to number one on both sides of the Atlantic and over the next 18 months an unstoppable flood of great songs followed.
Four months later on February 3, 1959, after a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, he took a small charter flight en route to the next show. When the plane crashed minutes after take-off, Holly, Richie Valens, The Big Bopper and the pilot, were all killed instantly in a tragedy commemorated by Don McLean as 'the day the music died'. Thankfully, it didn't, for although Holly was only 22 when he lost his life, his songs remain destined never to fade away.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/8a8ee2bf-dcd1-4973-81b1-bc0c5e8b471a_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727396504
the-rough-guide-to-the-blues-songsters
The Rough Guide to the Blues Songsters

Before there was the bluesman there was the songster and it was these travelling troubadours who helped lay the foundations for the development of the blues. In the decades preceding the phonograph and radio and before the American national entertainment industry had reached into the deepest parts of the South, it was these wandering musicians who provided the musical entertainment for all manner of social events. In order to be able to scrape a living together the songster had to be incredibly versatile and come up with something for everyone. Armed with a banjo or guitar they performed every form of popular music of the day from folk songs and ballads to rags and spirituals. Priding themselves on their huge repertoires, they could be described as the human jukeboxes of their time.
Along with the many musicians shrouded in mystery, this collection boasts tracks by legendary bluesmen such as Leadbelly, Charley Patton and Blind Blake. Aside from the blues these great performers would have been able to play everything asked of them at local bars and rural dances, and it is said that Leadbelly could draw on a repertoire of over 500 songs from many different genres. Likewise, the 'Father of the Delta Blues', Charley Patton left glimpses into his songster roots and true musical versatility with songs such as the featured 'Mississippi Boweavil Blues'. This selection features variations on traditional ballads about legendary characters Stagger Lee and John Henry. These became standards in the repertoires of songsters, both black and white, who shared a similar colour-blindness when it came to the racial origins of a tune. Frank Hutchison and Dick Justice were both white performers whose styles were heavily influenced by black musicians, in particular Luke Jordan whose featured track Pick Poor Robin Clean is a gambling song masterpiece. Like Jordan, many other well-known East Coast songsters such as Blind Blake and Peg Leg Howell worked with travelling shows, which became a major factor in the spreading of the blues. Many of these shows were operated by vendors of patent medicines who would attract crowds by putting on a performance. As these shows began to disappear and recorded music and dancing in duke joints became popular, so the older songster style became less fashionable. Apart from the few waxed recordings which leave a tempting glance into a world before the blues, many of the featured artists faded into obscurity, as the songsters were overtaken by blues singers whose music was heavily promoted by record companies. Those songsters who were able to embrace this new music such as Charley Patton and Leadbelly became seminal figures and the rest is history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/0c512a77-e93e-4f22-a28d-0206d7c70fbf_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727401238
the-rough-guide-to-thelonious-monk
The Rough Guide To Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk was one of the most innovative and idiosyncratic figures in jazz history.
