The material is a combination of new arrangements of folk songs and tunes and new, original material.

The evergreen Bob Delyn a'r Ebillion, fronted by poet Twm Morys, returns to the recording studio for the first time in eight years and their new track of old and new verses, 'Y Gwynt', reminds us of their ever popular 'Ffair y Bala' Welsh bagpipe and drums track, and is a more than fitting opening to the album. Cardiff based Welsh bluegrass quartet, Taff Rapids, gives us an energetic version of the favourite 'Moliannwn', with a twist, while the ancient form of cerdd dant singing of poetry to harp accompaniment is represented in the enchanting harmony singing of Pedair on the track 'Blodau'r Cwm'. As a complete contrast, the duo Peiriant's melodic and atmospheric experimental music on fiddle and electric guitar confirms that 'folk' can really be a wide-ranging genre, with such a variety of music naturally sitting side by side on the same album.

The talented instrumentalist Gwenifer Raymond performs a striking new arrangement of the old Welsh hymn tune, 'Llef', and 'Mwyar Duon' by The Gentle Good is a spellbinding new composition by the folk singer-songwriter. Renowned singers Gwilym Bowen Rhys and Georgia Ruth have chosen two Welsh love songs, arranged in their own sincere style and Lleuwen Steffan's original song, 'Haleliwia Newydd', (produced by Rhys Edwards) is inspired by her recent research into old hymns from the Welsh oral tradition.

One of the new acts on the album is the sisters duo Elin a Carys from Montgomeryshire, choosing to contribute their own arrangement of a favourite by folk group Plethyn, of which their father, Jac Gittins, was a crucial member. Irfan Rais, originally from Singapore, with his haunting rendition of 'Lliw Gwyn Rhosyn yr Haf' shows that he is equally talented as a singer and a guitarist, while brothers Liam and Sion Rickard, as Lo-Fi Jones, contribute energy and passion in their folk and dance music inspired song 'Onnen'.

Stafell Sbâr Sain: Tŷ Gwerin definitely represents the best of the Welsh folk scene today and while giving us a reason to celebrate, also reminds us of the strong tradition of the past and those who inspired the artists of today to explore their tradition, to own it and through everything to thrive through their own interpretation of their musical heritage.
A session to celebrate the album release will be held at Tŷ Gwerin at the National Eisteddfod, Wrecsam, on Thursday evening, August 7th, with performances by The Gentle Good, Irfan Rais and Elin a Carys.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/SAIN2867_VariousArtists-StafellSbarSain_TyGwerin-1LP.webp?v=1754390346
gobaith-mawr-y-ganrif
Gobaith Mawr y Ganrif

Geraint Jarman (1950 - 2025) was a true artist - a musician like no other, and also a prolific composer and poet. He went on to release a run of albums every year, until 1981, all on the Sain label - his unique mix of rock, reggae and pop, with the odd tender ballad thrown in, was a style unheard of before in the Welsh language. He was the voice of Wales as he saw the country at the time and brought modern suburban, city life, into Welsh contemporary music. Inspiring a whole generation of Welsh youngsters with his electrifying and exiting live performances in the late 70s and early 80s, he later went on to record many other albums on various labels, his last released in 2020 on the Ankst label. Having become prominent on the Welsh music scene through being a member of Welsh folk band Bara Menyn (with Meic Stevens and Heather Jones), and composing a number of songs for various artists, by the mid 1970s Jarman was eager to record his own music. This first ground-breaking album was recorded over two days at Stacey Road Studio, Cardiff, and mixed in ten hours, and showcases Jarman's talents as a poet as well as a composer. The musicians included the legendary Tich Gwilym on guitar, Lincoln Carr on bass and Phil Maynard, also on guitar. Guest musicians included Dodo Wilding, a member of Racing Cars, on drums, and Geraint Watkins on accordion and piano, who later went on to perform with Paul McCartney and Van Morrison. The songs included the new sound of Welsh reggae, folk inspired humerous songs, hearttfelt ballads, and rock songs, injected with Tich Gwilym's unique playing on the Fender Stratocaster.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/2000x2000bb_57519417-1399-4904-8cfa-9aa87fc4a4c7.jpg?v=1776205705
viii-1
VIII

Recorded at Stiwdio Sain and produced by Geraint Cynan, with Aled Wyn Hughes as engineer, the new album, Ar Log VIII, truly represents the group's long history and what they have generously given to their audiences over the years - great entertainment while re-defining our traditional melodies and songs and taking them to the world as ambassadors of our rich folk heritage. The present members are Geraint Glynne Davies (main vocals, guitar, 12 string guitar), Dafydd Roberts (flute, triple harp, whistles, backing vocals, percussion), Gwyndaf Roberts (knee harp, clarsach, backing vocals), Graham Pritchard (fiddle, mandolin), Iolo Jones (fiddle, viola), and Geraint Cynan (keys, hammond, main vocals, backing vocals, percussion), with guest musicians Aled Wyn Hughes joining on bass and Carwyn Rhys Williams on drums. Keeping true to the unique Ar Log musical style the album is a perfect blend of traditional and original material. There are tunes from the archive and brand-new ones; old favourites passed on to the group by many a renowned musician, such as triple harpist Nansi Richards (Dafydd and Gwyndaf's first harp teacher), and a Plygain carol with words dating back to the 16th century. Also included are 'The Two Sisters' song cycle tracks released recently as an EP.

The new album is an opportunity to pay tribute to friends lost. Ar Log has been very fortunate to collaborate on several occasions with the late dear Dewi Pws. Despite his obvious wit, it is Dewi’s most profound songs that capture the hearts of his fellow Welsh compatriots best. 'Mae Lleucu Wedi Marw' comprises a simple, nostalgic melody by singer songwriter Huw Chiswell, and the sincere and clever lyrics are an example of Dewi at his best as a subtle and striking word-smith. The album bonus track is another fitting tribute, this time to one of the original members of Ar Log, Dave Burns, who died in December 2023."When the group was discussing possible songs for Ar Log VIII", says Gwyndaf Roberts, on behalf of the group,"Dave proposed the song ‘The Rose of Tralee’ – one of his favourite songs when he was a child which was popularised nationally by Irish tenor John McCormack. It was a remarkable coincidence to discover that an excellent Welsh translation already existed, the work of the crowned poet and broadcaster T. Glynne Davies, Geraint Glynne’s late father. When it became apparent that Dave’s health would not allow him to come to the studio, the rest of the members of Ar Log made sure that his wish was granted and that he could contribute to Ar Log VIII, which he did with much courage.
