Across six expansive tracks Laswell and Shocklee take turns deconstructing and rebuilding tracks from Huber's latest album, Gravity-Insanity, as well as songs from some of his earlier releases, from the inside out. For those unfamiliar with Huber, the Helsinki, Finland singer has built a career cross-pollinating musical touchstones from the 60s, 70s and 80s into a timeless funky gumbo. He distills essences of everything from Berlin-era Bowie and vintage Philly soul to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Tom Jones into a consistent groove that pulls off the unique feat of being laid back and relentless at the same time. "It's all about the groove" Huber offers "that subconscious funk that hits you on a primal level and gets into your soul. I've always tried to have that, in some aspect, embedded in the DNA of every record I've ever made. I never even imagined having my songs worked on by legends like Keith Shocklee and Bill Laswell but when my producer, Tomás Doncker, brought the remix concept up I was incredibly excited. And what they've done with these songs just blows me away, it takes everything to a whole other level."

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/abe2342d-60d9-4538-b09f-41b1793f56c7_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727528652
down-z7fht6
Down

Even though the Finnish artist didn’t intend on having the project to be a double album, Down, which features plenty of funky tracks, is his latest work and the follow-up/companion album to the recently released and more soul-oriented Up. Twin doesn’t necessarily mean identical: Down doesn’t have the vintage quality of Up, and if it promises a darker approach, it’s far from being depressing music: it’s not because you go down that you should escape the fun and the funk. “‘Down is where you get Down,” Huber notes. “It’s a landscape that happens on the dance floor, on the downbeat. You might say this album explores the darker side of Future Funk; it’s quite a bit heavier, musically and lyrically, especially compared to the more lighter and romantic songs on ‘UP.'” The nine tracks, that Sam Huber describes as “Future Funk,” put a post-modern spin on the fundamentals of funk while sounds and beats are earthbound and interstellar all at once. That’s why no one should expect an album of classic funk. This is a more challenging approach but still accessible while blending musical touchstones from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s with modern elements that belong to hip-hop rhythms, trap beats, and beyond. And if you wonder how a white man from Finland’s Helsinki could accomplish that, you have to know that Huber has had a sustainable music career for 24 years and is a star in his country. After listening to a few songs, it is clear that his flexible but mostly deep baritone perfectly fits into the genre.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/product_id._26db7528_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727663081
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/collections/test_b4f4afa2_thumbnail_4096_3af82b6d-836b-4e7f-ae71-3087e8f8d0e3.jpg?v=1727528633
