The British invasion was over, and the new music explosion was emanating from large urban cities across America. In Detroit, Berry Gordy's Motown was the "Sound of Young America" and Philly was next with "The Sound of Philadelphia." One of the local Philly vocal groups was the Philly Devotions, consisting of Morris Taylor, Ernest Gibson, Gregory Davis, George Peterson and lead vocalist Matt Covington. The group's first two records were self released, then they moved to local Philly label Don De before graduating to a licensing deal with Columbia Records. As good as any of the better known groups associated with the Philly sound, the Philly Devotions became quite frustrated when their label mates on Gamble and Huff's PIR Records (also distributed by Columbia) were scoring pop and R&B hits, while the Devotions' singles were largely ignored by radio. The frustration became too much to bear and the group eventually disbanded, much to the chagrin of fans who witnessed the blossoming of the newly created Philly sound. Presented here for the first time is a complete collection of the Devotions recordings, capturing all the components that became hallmarks of the early Philly sound.

As one of three vocalists for the band Creative Funk - one of the first, truly independent funk collectives of the early 1970s, Diane Jenkins left her mark as an exceptionally talented singer who would undoubtably have ranked among the very best if she had decided to stick around the scene longer than she did. An extraordinary live funk band who released a handful of singles on the label they created themselves (Creative Funk Music), Creative Funk only actually existed for a brief period of time between 1972 and 1975, and although they were quite successful for a short while in their hometown of New York City, they never had the backing of major label to expose them to a wider audience We are indeed fortunate that she left behind some wonderful recordings with Creative Funk - and also as a featured solo artist with four of her own releases on the Creative Funk label. With memorable tunes such as "I'm A Woman," "Tow-A-Way Zone" and "I Need You" - which most likely featured her bandmates backing her up, Jenkins carved out a small but impressive legacy that will no doubt resonate for years to come. Presented here are the complete singles that she recorded under her own name, newly remastered for this exclusive compilation, and finally made available in the digital domain for all to enjoy.

A great, self-contained, soul music collective that never got their just due because of a spurious tax scam that was prevalent in the record industry in the early to mid-1970s - the group known as Spice, and their 1976 LP “Let There Be Spice,” remained in obscurity without members of the band even knowing that it was ever released until nearly 30 years after the fact. Now, thanks to the sharp ears of his internet savvy aging mother and subsequent interviews with Spice’s leader Richard Brown Jr. – the full story of who this almost-forgotten band was, and what happened to them and why, is finally revealed. Whatever transpired business-wise should not obscure the quality of the music that resulted in the recording of this album. The performances are impeccable, the musicianship is top-notch, and the original songs in retrospect, were way ahead of their time. Wells soon began recording and touring as a featured vocalist with artists such as Lou Rawl, M.F.S.B., Leon Huff, Jean Carne and Dexter Wansel. In 1979, she joined the band of Roy Ayres and eventually sang on “Turn Me Loose” and co-wrote the track “Let’s Stay Together” from his 1982 album “Feeling Good”.
