His excellent first solo album – Catch a Falling Star – was recorded in 1973 but sadly never released. Rediscovered and now restored it is available to hear for the very first time. Despite a career as a writer and musician stretching back to the 1960s, working as a performer and arranger for Cliff Richard, Shirley Bassey, Bucks Fizz and Gene Pitney his history isn’t widely known. From a start with The Penny Blacks and Jo Jo Gunne, Tom worked steadily until he received an offer of a residency in the Middle East with The Sheila Carter Band in the early 1970s.

It was during his time performing in the resorts of Dubai and Kuwait that he purchased some recording equipment and set about making his own album. He played all of the instruments, sang all of the vocals, and mixed and produced Catch a Falling Star. As his residency came to a close, Tom returned to the UK where his album caught the ear of Gerry Bron. However, instead of being offered his own record deal, Gerry Bron invited him to join a new band called Sparrow.

The Catch a Falling Star master tape was put away and forgotten about until recently when Tom Marshall was clearing out his home in Bromley. On the tape was a wonderful collection of brilliantly written and recorded songs from 1973 which can finally now be heard by all. The tracks are full of beautiful harmonies and jangling guitars influenced by the West Coast American artists of the time, and the 60s bands he grew up listening to.
