I then read that John had liked Lonnie Donegan’s skiffle song \u003ci\u003eLost John\u003c\/i\u003e (1956), while \u003ci\u003eOh Yoko \u003c\/i\u003esounded a little like \u003ci\u003eOh, Carol\u003c\/i\u003e and \u003ci\u003eLost John \u003c\/i\u003ecombined, with its skiffle beat and tender lyric. I wondered why there’d never been an answer record to that. Combining the name of his sister Roberta with two others which have historically been common in the UK, ‘Bob’ and ‘Smith’, Brill playfully presents his works as the products of a purposely ordinary male \/ female persona. This unusual move is also mirrored in Bob and Roberta Smith’s witty, irreverent approach to art and music. The artist’s best known works are \u003ci\u003eMake Art Not War\u003c\/i\u003e (1997), \u003ci\u003eWhen Donald Judd Comes to our Place \u003c\/i\u003e(1997) and the controversial \u003ci\u003eLetter to Michael Gove\u003c\/i\u003e (2011), a letter to the then UK Secretary of State for Education reprimanding him for the “destruction of Britain’s ability to draw, design and sing”. Bob and Roberta Smith's new group includes long time collaborators, George Lionel Barker on bass, George Clegghorn on sax, Leonardo Ulian on Theremin, Owen Thomas of The Graham Coxon band on guitar and the American artist Jessica Voorsanger on joint vocals. Upcoming recordings include \u003ci\u003eDon’t join the Apathy Band\u003c\/i\u003e, encouraging people to get out there to fight apathy and celebrate creativity. Accompaniment is by the Byatt Macrobiotic Unit Symphony, featuring Shawn Lee, B.J.Cole \u0026amp; Lewis Durham. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTot Taylor grew up in a Cambridgeshire village where his parents ran the only shop for ten miles: a confectioners wedged between two USAF airbases, (the source of the infant Tot’s early listening habits). The shop was regularly visited by the Glitter Band, National Hunt jockeys ‘riding out' and Barry Sheen. Tot was signed to Chris Blackwell's Island Records while still at school. He founded the independent label The Compact Organization and has continually moved between the fields of music and the visual arts (inc film) as well as curating museum-level art exhibitions worldwide from the iconic Riflemaker gallery in Beak Street, Soho taking over a former gunmaker’s workshop to create a multi-floor, multi-discipline space right in the heart of London. The gallery worked with Tate Modern, MoMA (the Museum of Modern Art, NY) and Frieze London exhibiting groundbreaking work by feminist artists Judy Chicago, Yoko Ono and Penny Slinger along with William Burroughs \u0026amp; Gavin Turk among its 300+ exhibitions. His 2017 novel The Story of John Nightly was voted one of the best of that year by the Guardian newspaper and singled out for praise in Q, Mojo and Record Collector. He founded a new record label in 2020 called TheCampus whose first releases have been by British painter Bob \u0026amp; Roberta Smith and Swedish artist Virna Lindt. Myself and Riff didn’t know each other when we moved into the place though quickly found out  we were ‘blood brothers’ both (separately) in the process of recording what would be our ‘debut’ albums, he for MCA and myself for GTO\/CBS. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e  Unbeknown to myself and Riff both albums we going to be very much ‘budget' recordings as far as the record labels were  concerned which in my case meant that I physically ran between the actual performing studio, the ‘live room’   and the ‘listening' or ‘control-room' (to save precious studio minutes).   My first location having moved up to London from Cambridge was Central Street in the East End which had been rough, particularly as I had found a full time job locally as a night-porter, working through  the nite 11pm - 9am in a very busy multi-room commuter’s hotel so I was pleased to be moving  from there (escaping) to the leafy streets of NW6, even if it did mean I was sharing a bedroom with four other people.  This song came out of that move and it’s almost too-upbeat energy is a celebration of my first couple of months  of living there. The recording was due to be released on 1 May 1980 but in the month’s leading up to it the record label  - GTO - was sold and absorbed into CBS and I and other ‘new signings’ became part of a bigger machine.
