Originally known as the Darling Sisters, they later became Ronnie and the Relatives before reinventing themselves as The Ronettes. Their iconic sound was closely associated with producer Phil Spector's 'wall of sound' production technique. The group's 1963 single "Be My Baby" had a significant influence on Brian Wilson and the sound of The Beach Boys. Two sisters (Veronica, later known as Ronnie Spector, and Estelle Bennett) and their cousin (Nedra Talley), first began performing at local sock hops and bar mitzvahs around Manhattan in the early 60s under the name Ronnie and The Relatives. It was under this name that they recorded several sides for Colpix Records in 1961-1962, all great slices of early sixties pop / R&B, though none of which managed to chart. A name change to The Ronettes and more great singles were released in 1963 (including the killer interpretation of The Ray's doo wop classic "Silhouettes"), but again, success eluded the group. They soon were performing with their over-the-top hair on Murray The K's legendary live program and, disappointed with their lack of success on Colpix, placed a call to audition for Phil Spector and the rest, as they say, is history. However, despite Colpix's inability to find airplay and sales for the group, these early sides nonetheless show glimpses of the greatness that was to come and are fantastic sides of early 60s pop in their own right.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/f23a947e-9a68-4e1d-a8d2-c125df97bfca_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727232901
cant-feel-nothin-no-man-is-an-island
Cant Feel Nothin / No Man Is An Island

Lead single from Texas' legendary psychedelic gospel soul group The Relatives' forthcoming album, "Goodbye World", with a searing and heartfelt rendition of "No Man Is An Island" on the B-side. The Temptations-style vocal group is best known by crate-diggers for their 1971 single "Don't Let Me Fall," which is also the title of a collection, released by Heavy Light Records in 2009, that documents their complete 1970s output. The psych-funk pioneers reunited in '09 and have been active ever since, touring the world and releasing their first proper full-length The Electric Word in 2013. The new record, Goodbye World set to drop in early 2016 is an elegy of sorts, since it showcases the final recordings of the Relatives' founder and leader Reverend Gean West, who died in February 2015 at the age of 78 in the midst of working on the album. His signature vocals can be heard on the A-Side along with his brother Tommie West on top of a slow-rolling, bottom-heavy funk groove.
