His latest album (Saint, recorded as MXLX) is his 63rd in two decades… but his best by some margin. In some senses he is an outsider artist, but this idea doesn’t give you the full picture of just how good a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter he is. Saint sees him reconnect with one of his first musical loves: heavy metal: “My cousin used to babysit me when I was six. He played me a lot of Metallica and it blew my head open; I had no idea music could do that.” He went through a teenage phase of loving Slipknot and Napalm Death and has, in more recent years, tried to capture some of this overwhelming power, in a completely unique form of music which owes just as much to experimental electronic music, English and Indian folk, sea shanties, post rock, noise and techno.

On listening to the opening track from Saint, lead single, ‘Kitab Siriyun’, a joyful life of enheavyment and riffology can be sensed. Seismic doomy riffs with processed black n’ roll drums might sit satisfyingly between the sturm of Kverletak and the drang of Neurosis but that is just a fraction of what is going on here. Buzzing analogue synths beat microtonally against one another creating the sense of marching pipes played in the Middle Ages during wartime, linking Loveridge to a deep folk past and painstakingly recorded harmonised vocals create the sense of a crew of seafarers lost on the waves singing shanties for comfort.

Elsewhere on ‘Prayer Slips To Mammon’ early music is reimagined as inventive alternative rock which comes from a similar place to the music of Richard Dawson, but with Loveridge unleashing his not inconsiderable skill for throat singing. The album reaches an apotheosis of harshness on ‘Saturn’ which still contains Goblin-like passages of organ-driven beauty. Featuring more infinitely harmonised vocals, ‘The Eternal Roar Of The Howling Static Void’ dares to give form to that Earth/Lightning Bolt collaboration we’d all dreamt of but didn’t dare ask for outloud.

Chance lent a hand in the creation of the album. He describes how when he was ready to start on the new record last April, “I accidentally kicked my main synth down the stairs and broke it, so I ended up creating 90% of the sounds on the album using FM synthesis, a process I’d never used before.” The integration of all of his different ideas stemmed ultimately from distancing himself from outside influences as much as he could: “I forbid myself from listening to any music while writing and recording so I had no outside influence to worry about. On previous albums I'd find myself listening to Slipknot or Napalm Death and get frustrated, thinking to myself, "Why the fuck don’t I sound like them?!" So this time I decided to go without. This meant that what came out came out as it was, with nothing else to cast a shadow on the process.” Listen to tomorrow’s cult artist today; listen to MXLX’s Saint.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/df07172d-a8c4-b2df-de66-b95f9277da5c_85ce36b3_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726289026
modern-dance-gold-vol-1
Modern Dance Gold: Vol. 1

What happens when three inveterate unconventional music pathfinders such as Valentina Magaletti, Sarah Register, and Matthew Simms combine their experimental trajectories to form a new adventurous project interacting remotely with no predetermined direction? Now Hay returns with The Longest Day, recorded live over four days in Giant Wafer studios in Wales and mixed by Toby’s brother Tim. Its release coincides with the summer solstice, and it is another bright offering, both more celebratory and more urgent than its predecessor. Hay is a 12 string guitarist and his style, with its penchant for unusual tunings, is all his own. His distinctive sound often comes from a desire to make his guitar sound like another instrument altogether. He engages with landscapes and their inhabitants, and while The Gathering painted a musical portrait of Hay’s home, the scope of The Longest Day is broader. On the title track he looks both forward and back in time while recognising the importance and difficulty of living in the present. These themes - travel and return, time, the common ground between natural rhythmic processes and the rhythms of human life - occur throughout the album and are reflected in its enigmatic musical language. Where Hay’s themes have become more expansive, so has his musical range. There are elements of jazz, the country twang of a violin, the exploratory tendencies of modern composition. The result is an atmosphere of collaboration, and indeed Hay’s fellow musicians (Aidan Thorne on double bass, drummer Mark O’Connor, saxophonist Greg Sterland and violinist David Grubb) play a crucial role in the overall sound. The first, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, was intended for his own generation as they started to think about the kind of world they wanted to leave behind. The second, For Little Ones, was for the children they had or would have in the years to come. The result was a kaleidoscopic folk-jazz suite on the power of love, imbued with all the romance and mystery of an Arthur Rackham illustration for an ancient English fairy tale. The songs, remarkably adventurous given Donovan was a globally famous singer at his commercial height, combined the influences he had amassed so far. There is something about A Gift from a Flower to a Garden that could never be repeated, though. It is such an innocent evocation of the childlike imagination, so redolent of its time, yet set apart from it too. All these years later, the peaceful qualities of this pioneering, enchanting, deeply unusual album feel more valuable than ever.

With authenticity core to the project, The state51 Conspiracy followed the original Designer Sydney Randolph Maurer in all aspects, by engaging one of the UK’s leading experts in box set design, Daniel Mason at Something Else, to painstakingly recreate the box, records and accompanying ephemera - all originally commissioned by the legendary Clive Davis at Epic Records/CBS. The first challenge was to find the deep blue leatherette paper the original box set was covered in; a problem since it was no longer in production. “I knew people who had stacks of it, gathering dust on top shelves, so I bought it up wherever I could find it,” says Mason. Then came the reproduction of 12 loose leaf lyric sheets on fine art watercolour paper, each of them featuring a watermark and a fairytale-like illustration by Donovan’s artist friends Sheena McCall and Mick Taylor. Where, though, to find the same paper stock? “I found out that it was made at a paper mill in North Wales called Abbey Mills. Unfortunately the mill dissolved in the early 70s and very little of the paper remained. However enough paper remained to allow us to produce the numbered certificate also signed by Donovan that sits within the box.”

Then to the iconic cover image. Donovan and Jimi Hendrix’s personal photographer Karl Ferris, used infra-red film to achieve the psychedelic effect on the cover, but the original negatives couldn’t be found. Mason then used digital technology to ramp up the colour levels on a reproduction from an original copy of the album while allowing it to remain a little bit faded, as it would be after half a century. The same labour of love and care has gone into producing all elements of the box; from the rebuilding of the famous front cover font to the hand-numbered and signed certificate; letterpress printed on the original paper stock of the 1968 UK release lyric sheets.

To cap it all off the original mono master tapes were waiting safely in the EMI Donovan Archive and transferred from tape to digital by Abbey Road Studios where new lacquers were cut, ensuring Donovan's favoured mono version of the album would be presented both physically (and digitally for the very first time) in striking audiophile quality. It’s a journey that’s taken him from 80s royalty as what The Guardian calls “a key component” of one of the UK’s premier new wave acts, releasing classic records like Tin Drum and Quiet Life, to a renowned collaborator, working with artists as diverse as Ryuchi Sakamoto, Anja Garbarek, Annie Lennox, and, most recently, Maiya Hershey. His is a career of ever-changing styles and genres, from blissed-out electronica made with YMO’s Yukihiro Takahashi, to his work with jazz-rock group Nine Horses, to the heavy atmospheres of his transcendent Exit North project, and far, far, beyond.

Based on his consistently excellent creative output, it’s not surprising that he’s also had time to fit in a clutch of excellent solo albums. Songs that might seem impenetrable can shyly give up their secrets - a moment of tenderness, say, or soaring strings, or a wistful chord change. Slope, his debut, was described by The Observer upon its release in 2007 as “unclassifiable”, a description that goes some way to detailing the album’s crystalline synthetic peaks, dusty analogue depths, and wide experimental sweep. To hear the icy IDM of ‘Grip’ rubbing up against the drone-led modern classical in ‘Sow The Salt’, and the strange sound experiments in ‘Gap of Cloud’ juxtaposed with the fractured emotion of ‘Playground Martyrs’ is to hear an artist capable of ploughing his own unique furrow through music.

Although nine years and another glut of projects (an ambient album called A Secret Life made with John Foxx and Steve D'Agostino, an array of instrumental pieces, Jansen and Japan bandmate Richard Barbieri’s fifth album, Lumen, and the list really does go on and on) came between Slope and second album, Tender Extinction, the same restive spirit remained that first prompted Jansen to go it alone. Tender Extinction is a more meditative affair than its predecessor, one where comet tails of synthesiser stretch across a song and fathomless sonic depths simmer and roll like an ocean. James Ginzburg’s brand new remaster will render the hiemal beauty and sumptuous arrangements of tracks such as ‘And Birds Sing All Night’, ‘Captured’, and ‘Her Distance’ even more perfectly than before.

But why these albums and why now? Both are special pieces of work, and place the talents of an artist that often stays in the shadows front and centre. Jansen is someone whose every action is in service of The Project, shapeshifting and adapting in relation to how he can improve the music. He’s said in that past that “I remove myself from any references to other people or popular culture. I explore sound and composition without any preconceptions about the finished piece or its place in the world.” Though this is a humble approach that clearly pays dividends (as evinced by his mixing, session, and collaborative work) Slope and Tender Extinction allow for the full range of his influences, experimentation, and ideas to come to the fore. It’s roughly analogous to the way in which the music of Teleplasmiste – his duo with Mark O Pilkington – can be experienced. Their music is lush and layered like a rainforest floor, a complex lattice of sound that moves in several directions at once. Some of those movements are under the surface, buried purposefully low in the mix “so they can surprise you when you’re under different conditions,” as Pilkington puts it. “Like psychedelics, we like to think that people can return to the music in different moods and different frames of mind, and that different things will appear in their hearing.” It fits the cosmic experimentation that the duo have explored on previous albums such as To Kiss The Earth Goodbye and Frequency is The New Ecstasy, and acts as an adjunct to York’s previous work as part of Coil, and currently alongside Steve Davis and Kavus Torabi in The Utopia Strong.

Of Nature And Electricity is as forward-thinking as Teleplasmiste have ever been. “It’s some of the most complex music we’ve ever made,” says Pilkington. Its five tracks, only one of which is less than eight minutes in length, are all vast in scope. The collage-like approach to composition for this album has resulted in something disparate and dramatic, music that embraces intense swings in momentum and turns them to their advantage. “It was great to find ways to make a piece metamorphose into something completely different. Mike’s particularly good at joining things together that you don’t imagine would work,” Pilkington says. For all their new record’s wild waves of machine-generated noise, the band also weave in plenty of organic material. Three of the four tracks, York points out, “have got stuff recorded with a microphone on them.” On the meditative closer ‘Into Words And Out Of Them Again’, says Pilkington, “we noticed how present the air passing from Mike’s mouth into the pipe he’s playing was. You can hear it rasping and whistling. It just gives it a really vivid, organic presence, that can be lacking with some of your ‘music untouched by human hands’.” The LP’s title, Of Nature And Electricity, also neatly sums up the band’s entire ethos.

It’s the way Teleplasmiste find harmony between those two opposites that makes their music so engaging, using the power of analogue synthesis to tap into the ineffable, but simultaneously injecting enough nature and humanity to make it emotionally accessible – a cosmic canvas for that act of expressive exchange, which can be entirely different depending on the listener. They’re immensely proud of this new album – a chance to go bolder and make their music even more experimental:. “It’s a step further out from what we’ve done before,” says Pilkington. “It’s some of the most far out music we’ve ever made.”

The artwork for the album came about via their friend Fuchsia Voremberg, a rare book dealer, who mentioned that she had found something they needed to see, a one off 19th century collection of vividly-inked automated drawings made using a device called a pendulograph. Something like a harmonograph, the pendulograph is described in a 1881 publication by. Rev. John Andrew: 'The Pendulograph: a series of Bi-Pendulum Writings of the Twenty Ratios of the Musical System; or Sound Seen in the Silence’.
