The films significance at the time of release lay in the depiction of a mature gay man who was both successful, well adjusted and at peace with his sexuality.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe music on Side Two comes from two different sources: tracks one to four are from the 1985 Channel Four documentary about Viv Richards. Simply called “Viv” it was directed by Greg Lanning, with words and narration by Darcus Howe. It was (and still is) a fascinating film recounting Richards’ rise from young talented Antiguan to global cricket superstar. It also explored the long history of West Indian players through the English game. Howe later recalled how seeing Viv Richards walking out to bat at the Oval (just down the road from where Howe lived in Brixton) without a helmet on no matter how fast the bowler was - and wearing his Rasta sweatbands of gold, green and red, was inspirational. The documentary was later re-titled ‘Viv Richards - King Of Cricket’ for the video market, and let’s face it, that’s a more commercial title. I’d strongly recommend trying to track it down to spend an hour or so in the company of Viv and Darcus. As I write this it’s still up on a popular online streaming site for free.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe last six cues of Side Two are from a 1970 BBC Omnibus film ‘Shapes In A Wilderness’. Directed by Tristram Powell this was a documentary about the importance and influence of art therapy in mental hospitals, tracing its origins from a painting hut in a wartime military hospital to its successful and widespread incorporation in institutions. It featured fascinating medical insights, disturbing imagery and Ron’s finely tuned accompaniment. On its original transmission John Schlesinger saw it and was heard to say “I must have that composer for my new film!”. But he’s never had a great deal of luck with the Bruton catalogue. By this he means that he’s never stumbled across a massive stash, or lucked-out buying a huge run for practically nothing –that’s the kind of thing that used to happen in the 1990s and the early noughties if you were out there looking hard for library music. But he did manage to get about 25 in one hit about 20 years ago when the BBC shut down their “TV Training Department” near Lime Grove and also when a box of Brutons ended up being dumped at a hospital radio, and they didn’t want the records, so Jonny got a call.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere are lots of Bruton albums in existence – over 330 LPs in the vinyl catalogue, issued between 1978 and 1985. That’s a lot of music to wade through if you are looking for sublime modern day sounds. For many years now the “trophies” from the Bruton catalogue have been the beat or action driven LPs – the two Drama Montage albums (BRJ2 and BRJ8) have always been the big hitters, and others such as High Adventure (BRK2) too.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBut Jonny has always found himself drawn to the lime green LPs, the pastoral, peaceful albums (The BRDs), which were full of the kind of gentle, lovely music that would turn up in Take Hart as Tony was painting a woodpecker or a badger or an Autumn tree. The other Brutons he likes are the orange ones (The BRIs) simply because they are full of experimental futuristic electronics and would remind him of 1980s ITV backgrounds. This LP series includes Brian Bennett’s cosmic classic Fantasia (BRI 10). Jonny has been knows to refer to this style of library music as “Krypton Factor library”, because it’s exactly what that strange but successful 1980s TV quiz show sounded like.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNot only does this album bring together a set of fabulous cues that would cost the average man in the street a month’s wages (if the originals were all wanted and if you could even track them all down), but it also chops out the need to listen to other tracks on library albums that are nowhere near as good.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe cues here all date from between 1978 and 1984. They come from the BRD, BRI, BRH, BRJ, BRM, BRR and BRs catalogues. If you think you know please get in touch. We know who it isn’t.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe can tell you that Assignment K dates from 1968, was a film about a toy maker who has a double life as an international spy. It was directed by Val Guest, who’d just finished trying to rescue the cinematic hotchpotch that was Casino Royale - he had been brought in by the Bond producers after Peter Sellers had walked off the movie. We imagine Assignment K may have been a slightly less stressful few months of shooting. As for the Kirchin score that we have here, we can tell you very little indeed, apart from the fact that the bass player was Ron Prentice (an ex blacksmith turned musician and craftsman) who worked on several Bond scores, but we know little else. And we only know this because it says so in the academic tome “Jazz On The Screen” by David Meeker.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Strange Affair is also from 1968, and was not only controversial but also a reasonably unsuccessful movie. Directed by David Greene who also directed, amongst other films, I Start Counting and the quite brilliant Sebastian. In this rather grubby flick a policeman called Peter Strange (played by Michael York) falls for an underage girl (played by Susan George), finds himself compromised by a pair of pornographers and gets lured into an errand for a smack gang. Titles such as 'Ritual Blues', 'Jungle Drums' and 'Dusky Slant-Eyed Maiden' by artists named Reg, Ted and Brian propelled my thoughts back to a time when Trechikoff's Asian Girl portrait hung on flocked-papered walls, plastic flamenco dancers posed upon polished walnut TV cabinets and Bernard Cribbins playing a spy, dragged up and belly-danced around a Pinewood, plywood Casbah, disguised as a hefty harem girl. Soon I realized this cultural cross pollination was Britxotica! During the 50's Americans became obsessed with all things Latin, African, Polynesian and Hawaiian. They made stars of composers Arthur Lyman, Esquivel, Les Baxter and Martin Denny who provided an exiting rhythmic soundtrack to their affluent modernist lifestyle of highly stylized Tiki themed restaurants, casinos and hotels adorned with tribal decoration. Recovering from war, steeped in tradition and closer to European, Middle Eastern and Asian influences, the British equivalent was rather different. Quietly reserved, gently comic and slightly confused. Ex-Vernon Girl, Lyn Cornell begins this Britxotica expedition with a gutsy vocal version of Johnny Dankworth's hit African Waltz, inventively transforming the cool afro-jazz instrumental into a song about a new kinda dance.\" Forget all the Mambo's, the Sambas and even the Cha-Chas\" she sings before warning us, \"Jungle will rock , savage will roll\". I love this crazy record, but I'm still baffled. How do I dance to this Viennese and Congolese concoction? There are three other female singers represented here. West Indian actress Lucille Mapp appears as an island enchantress enticing us to follow her into a strange paradise of alligators and hot muchahas. Folksinger Nadia Cattouse's frantic jazz chase was produced by her husband, big band arranger Dave Lindup. Kenny Lynch's sister Maxine Daniels, sings a sweet Calypso about her frustrating attempts to transform a rude and rebellious young chap into a Latin music lover. She wants to Cha-Cha, but he wants to Polka (isn't that always the way? Ed). Underrated Ted Heath's remarkably long career spanned the cultural chasm between traditional big bands of the 20's and groovy experimentation of the 60's. During the mid-century he explored exotic worlds with tracks like Shish Kebab, Madagascar and Jungle Drums. As with most Britxotica composers, he would effortlessly incorporate African, Turkish, Hawaiian, Italian, South American, Indian and Spanish flavours into his jazz fusion, all played to perfection by his dependable band of outstanding musicians.Austrian classical pianists Rawicz and Landauer escaped Nazi occupied Europe and settled in England, eventually becoming popular concert performers. In 1959 they experimented with gentle percussion and harmonic voices producing one great Britxotica LP, Rhythm in the Sun. The follow up single Bahama Rhumba, is a sublime slice of sun drenched tropical escapism recorded only yards away from Marble Arch.Zambezi was an international hit for Lou Busch and here is an infectiously camp, politically incorrect, light entertainment version by Johnny Dankworth's Orchestra with guest crooner Tony Mansell, who followed a solo career by founding The Tony Mansell Singers. They were responsible for many easy listening cover albums, vocal guest spots on the Dick Emery, Larry Grayson and Tommy Cooper shows and theme to the equally non-PC hit comedy Mind Your Language. Although Britxotica was mainly performed by whites, many contributors were black. The most famous being Edmundo Ros. Born in Trinidad, Ros moved to London in the late 30's and formed a Rumba band. With his soft distinctive voice and unique brand of samba, mambo and calypso, he enjoyed enormous success, ran his own club and performed at Buckingham Palace. Ros' friendly manner and accessible style popularised Latin music among the British public. Honoured with an OBE in 2000, he died in 2011 aged 100. The strange and exotic sound of the Hammond organ gained popularity from the mid 50's. Keyboard soloists Cherry Wainer and Jerry Allen were frequently on television championing the new instrument and can be heard here demonstrating its versatility. Cerveza is Miss Wainer's aggressive South American flavoured twist, while The Hat is a soft and sweet Calypso sung by Mr Allen. Britxotica was a unique blend of straight-laced sensibilities and an English perception of wild ethnicity. It was Our Man in Havana, The Admiral Crichton and Carry On Spying. Architecturally it was The Eve Club, The Beachcomber and Lorelei Pizzeria, all sadly gone, their hand built wooden bars and bamboo lined walls chopped up for tinder. Miraculously, hiding beneath London's Hilton Hotel, Trader Vics, an original 1963 Tiki bar, somehow survived the axe swinging safari which claimed its contemporaries. Of course the sound had to do something with the picture and not just use it as a carrier for peacock display. Kenny Graham was a jazz musician like no other. He'd formed an Afro Cuban band in the early 1950s, made an album of Moondog covers in 1957 (Moondog And Suncat Suites), been commissioned for advertising music, jazz compositions and film scores too. But he got little in return, so he'd turned his back on music by the mid 60s, never to write or perform again. A true maverick and simply too far ahead of the jazz crowd to get noticed, this charming little score demonstrates just what a great composer he really was. The initial book - called The Music Library, was the first ever overview of library music and the wild, unpredictable graphic art of their sleeves. It was first published in 2005 and featured about 400 sleeves and about 120 library companies over 200+ pages. The book was based on over a decade of intense library LP collecting by myself and a handful of other geeky weirdos and made for fascinating and revealing reading and looking. It was a great education for many entering this odd, hidden musical world for the first time. The book quickly sold out.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA few years later the price of the original book had gone bananas. But the geeky weirdos like me had all carried on voraciously consuming and collecting library music so I strongly felt the first book could easily be doubled in size with new info, new sleeves and many newly discovered lost library companies. Which is exactly what I set about doing. The Music Library expanded edition came out in 2015. You have to realise here that The Music Library book was very much a first - until its unexpected arrival (and even the arrival of the much larger expanded edition) there was no published survey, accessible catalogue or anything about international library music. It was still an odd old world shrouded in some historical mystery - even the internet had not really caught up. And I was still finding unusual British one-off library LPs, more unusual Italian library diversions, hidden French funky things and then I finally found Peter Patzer. From Germany. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eHidden away in a very obscure music library corner. All on his own.Peter was unusual in that he was an artist and musician who made his own music and issued it all on his own library, called Crea Music, based out of Bremen in North Germany. Over a series of eight whitevinyl LPs produced in the 1980s Peter Patzer created synth heavy experiments for possible use in film, TV, video and anything else coming along. All his LPs had the same simple red, white and blue sleeve and a typed name and number.
