They are all incredible and timeless tunes. Then there are some others that were never really a part of that other great music press construct, The Scene That Celebrates Itself, in the case of The Telescopes and their fantastic 1991 single ‘Flying’, and Spirea X’s ‘Chlorine Dream’ from the same year – both are indicative of the post-rave psychedelia that coloured everything at the time and fit perfectly within the shoegaze scene at the time.

Once we get to 1992, there’s a bit of a gap in the chronology as shoegaze was all too hastily dismissed in the country that birthed it, ignored in favour of grunge and then Britpop, the feedback fading away along with the bands that made it. But something amazing happened. when the s-word was used elsewhere in the world, rather than having negative connotations, it was merely a descriptive term. So, the flame was kept burning in the most unlikely places, waiting for everyone else to catch up once again. It’s no surprise, then, that there are bands on this compilation from America (Ringo Deathstarr, Beach House), Australia (Lowtide, Flyying Colours), Sweden (Echo Ladies) and everywhere in between.

Since the turn of the century, successive generations have returned to the sound, taking it to new and exciting places. Thanks to the internet and streaming and listening to music without context the echo got louder and louder. The original scene may have morphed into a myriad of things, from acoustic Americana to ambient techno and post-rock (as evidenced by Mogwai, who appear here with ‘Kids Will Be Skeletons’), but it was only a matter of time before things came full circle. However it was Slowdive’s reunion six years later that finally made people sit up and take notice. There were scores to settle, too. The backlash Slowdive had faced the first time around went beyond mere music criticism into outright hatred. Their return and self-titled album from 2017 somehow managed to be their best yet and one of the finest examples of the genre to date. It brought in yet another generation of fans – the likes of bdrmm and Horsegirl, both included here, weren’t even born when Slowdive first existed, they were discovering them anew.

Tracklisting: A1) Slowdive – Slomo A2) Chapterhouse – Pearl A3) Ride – Vapour Trail A4) Blind Mr Jones – Henna and Swayed A5) The Telescopes – Flying B1) Lush – Sweetness and Light B2) Spirea X – Chlorine Dream B3) Kitchens of Distinction – The 3rd Time we Opened the Capsule B4) Pale Saints – Sight of You B5) Lowtide – Alibi B6) Ringo Deathstarr – Kaleidoscope C1) Horsegirl – Billy C2) Air Formation – Daylight Storms C3) DIIV – Taker C4) bdrmm – A Reason to Celebrate C5) Flyying Colours – Long Holiday C6) Echo Ladies – Overrated – Robin Guthrie Version D1) Beach House – Lazuli D2) Mogwai – Kids will be Skeletons D3) Fleeting Joys – Go and Come Back D4) Ultra Vivid Scene – Mercy Seat D5) Galaxie 500 – Ceremony

Rough Trade Compilations of The Year: #11

Music For The Stars is a collection of songs that may lend themselves to the end of the night in headphones, for me it’s an Ode to Horsenden Hill in West London where we used to gather of an evening with the compilation tapes we had made introducing each other to new songs which we found; songs some of which would remain with us forever, we would sit there ‘til late overlooking the West End’s City Lights but could lay back and watch the stars.

From the Two-Piers label that brought you the acclaimed Pop Psychédeliqué (The Best of French Pop 1964-2019) comes new compilation Music for the Stars (Celestial Music 1960-1979), a collection of laid back, late night songs perfect for lying back, losing yourself in the moment. An album curated by Richard Norris (The Grid, Beyond the Wizard’s Sleeve, The Time and Space Machine, and more) and centred around Richard’s Liverpool Club Night ’The Hangout’ in the 1980’s.

Richard Norris on how The Hangout came about after being inspired to go to University in Liverpool…..

For a place with a distinctly psychedelic tinge, Liverpool was missing one thing in the mid-eighties. A full-on psychedelic club night. I’d been schooled in all things psychedelic, a result of working at Bam Caruso, a label steeped in psych who lovingly reissued many lysergic greats. It was a fantastic education. I was determined to bring some technicolour sonics to Liverpool.

I found a suitable venue, called Krackers, at the bottom of Mount Pleasant. It was a big basement club, with a stage, video projector, lights, bar, and long tables. In front of the stage, there was ample space for a dance floor. There’s something about clubs in basements. They just work. I chatted to the owner, Bill, who suggested trying out Thursdays for the new night. Inspired by Bam Caruso, and the Soho club Alice in Wonderland, I agreed to take Thursdays on. 50p to get in. The night was named The Hangout.

The Hangout was born in autumn 1984. The place was perfect. Clips of op art psychedelic films copied to VHS tape were projected on to the large screen that covered the stage. There was a smoke machine, a bubble machine, many moving lights. The place opened to a packed dancefloor and stayed that way into 1985 and beyond. There were guest bands, including Zodiac Mindwarp, Mr.Suit featuring Larry from Wimple Winch, Freight Train and the Cardiacs, among others. There were giveaways of sweets, flowers, balloons, and jelly. Tons of jelly.

Musically, the Hangout’s take on psychedelia and freakbeat had one aim - to make you dance. We weren’t trainspotters – it didn’t matter if a record was rare, so long as it grooved and worked on the dancefloor. We’d give equal time to the more bandwagon end of sixties exploitation as to hipper acts. I’d pick up tracks on shopping trips in London with Phil Smee from Bam Caruso, or at Probe in Liverpool, where there was a class selection of psychedelia. Bob and Mick from Probe, and their mate Bernie Connor, became Hangout DJ’s, and brought even further mind-bending madness to the Hangout dancefloor. Standout tunes got played again and again, every week, until tracks like The Left Banke’s ‘I’ve Got Something on My Mind’, the Turtles ‘Buzzsaw’, Can’s ‘Outside Your Door’ and all the other tunes you now hold in your hands, became bona fide Hangout club anthems. The Hangout came and went in a flash, but its legacy of bringing psychedelic foot stompers to the dancefloor carries on. The Hangout left me with a personal love of all things beat and freak. I’ve been pursuing various musical shapes that all have their roots on the Hangout’s psychedelic dancefloor ever since.

I hope you enjoy this compilation. For those that truly love Indie Pop, this underground music has been a constant source of joy for almost 40 years

Indie Pop – how best to describe it? A kind of Anti-Club, an underground scene where people discuss 7” B-sides and handmade record sleeves, swap fanzines, share hand-written gig flyers and collect button badges of their favourite bands. Ridiculed at times by the music press in the early years and the uninformed calling it ‘cardigan wearing’, ‘twee’ or ‘bed wetting’ music, but to its fans it has almost cult-like status and its DIY attitude continues to shine. Go back to beginnings in the mid 1980s seeking out cool 7” singles in hand made sleeves, by bands with unusual names, taking them home and falling in love with this music and all these exciting new bands. Hanging out in tiny basement clubs like The Sunshine Playroom and The Apple Orchard in Brighton, and many other similar club nights around the country, with like-minded souls, watching these DIY bands just pick up some instruments and get out there playing live. Who needed the Music Press anyway?

Fast forward to 2024 and there are still so many great bands coming through in the scene, such has indie Pop’s legacy stood the test of time, and when so many other press-driven ‘scenes’ have come and gone. This compilation just scratches at the surface, there is simply so much incredible music. From the 138-track starting point we couldn’t clear everything we wanted of course, but the final track listing we hope gives a beautiful glimpse into our world of Indie Pop. Is it perfect? I’d just finished another of my weekly Soho Radio shows and was starting to think about the next one. Raf had been on as a guest playing some of his favourite tunes of the day. We had a few drinks, told a few stories and started to plot and scheme. It was always a dream of mine to have a daily radio show. Radio had always informed and excited me from my early teens listening to John Peel under the blanket when I should’ve been either sleeping or revising right up to the present-day musical excursions of NTS, WFMU and numerous internet based stations.

We decided to speak to Adrian and Dan who ran Soho Radio to see if they’d be up for us doing a daily morning show. To our surprise they were into the idea and within 5 minutes Adrian came up with the name Morning Glory. We all liked it. We were all excited. It was all systems go. In December 2017 Raf and myself started a daily 2 hour show. We did the show together, got guests in and the musical policy was whatever we felt like that day. After several months Raf found the mornings too much. Off he went into the distance occasionally coming back with a smile, and a bag of new music. I carried on alone and then suddenly in March 2020 the world stopped, and we went into lockdown.

We set up in my house in Catford, Southeast London and carried on. The show became 3 hours a day and I started to invite friends, record labels, record shops, bands etc.. to supply me with hour long mixes that I played every day. The show took off during this time. My musical tastes expanded as I spent all day long searching for new sounds from around the globe. People started to send me more and more music. I became obsessed with the show. The audience started to take to social media and ask for certain tracks or artists to be played. I got listeners to make me mixes to play on the show and I did several phone interviews with musicians while playing some of their favourite tunes.

I was grateful that Soho Radio left me to my own devices. They never told me what to do or what to play – they trusted me and I trusted my instincts.

The music on this compilation is not a ‘best of’ it’s just how I felt when I compiled it at the start of 2025. Apart from a couple of tracks they are all things I’ve come across since the show started in December 2017. If I did a list of tracks now I’m sure it would be completely different. Surely that’s the point. We never stick in one place. We are always moving and searching. Always trying to unlock our minds. Put it on. Take your time and let it take you somewhere”

James Endeacott 2025

TRACKLIST:
VINYL
A1) Anuradha Paudwal – Gayatari Mantra
A2) Baba Zula – Arsiz Saksagan (Cheeky Magpie)
A3) Orchestra Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp – So Many Things (To Feel Guilty About)
A4) Christopher Martin – Playing Games With My Heart
B1) Geir Sundstøl – C’est Vide En Ville
B2) Brother Ah – Transcendental March (Creation Song)
B3) Les Abranis – Therrza Rathwenza
B4) Sparkels – That Boy of Mine
C1) Maximum Joy – Stretch (7” Mix)
C2) Chillera – SCHAX
C3) Elijah Minnelli – I Hope the Goats Come Back (ze-hood de-sham lichdal)
C4) Siti Muharam – Pakistan
D1) Muriel Grossmann – Traneing In
D2) Catford Gyrations – Land of 1000 Presets **
D3) The Living Daylights – Let’s Live For Today
D4) Natalie Bergman – Shine Your Light On Me

** Exclusive track on Vinyl

CD
1) Anuradha Paudwal – Gayatari Mantra
2) Baba Zula – Arsiz Saksagan (Cheeky Magpie)
3) Orchestra Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp – So Many Things (To Feel Guilty About)
4) Christopher Martin – Playing Games With My Heart
5) Geir Sundstøl – C’est Vide En Ville
6) Brother Ah – Transcendental March (Creation Song)
7) Les Abranis – Therrza Rathwenza
8) Sparkels – That Boy of Mine
9) Maximum Joy – Stretch (7” Mix)
10) Chillera – SCHAX
11) Elijah Minnelli – I Hope the Goats Come Back (ze-hood de-sham lichdal)
12) Siti Muharam – Pakistan
13) Muriel Grossmann – Traneing In
14) The Living Daylights – Let’s Live For Today
15) Natalie Bergman – Shine Your Light On Me
