Over time, Fothergill used the label to release other artists such as Lemon Kittens and Bombay Ducks. He also set up the side label Experimental Records for more rock-oriented music. However, Steven Stapleton, another member of Nurse With Wound, found these releases to be of poor quality and eventually took over the label when Fothergill stepped back from musical activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn its early years, United Dairies primarily released LPs with a few cassettes. In 1987, they released a 32 cassette box set called \"Untied Diaries 1979-1987\" which included most of their back catalog along with some previously unreleased items. However, buyers discovered that the box set was missing at least two titles and often had duplicate copies of others. The entire cassette series was later reissued by RRRecords.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eDue to problems with their distributor The Cartel, People Who Can't took over distribution and manufacturing for United Dairies. During this period, most releases were by Nurse With Wound and related projects but there were plans for releases by irr.app.ext. and Earthmonkey that never came to fruition due to issues with World Serpent Distribution. This album's predecessor, \u003ci\u003eI Don't Know What The World Is Coming To\u003c\/i\u003e, did show a slight decline in his Muscle Shoals sound and his writing skills. Safety Zone finds Womack getting a sonic overhaul whether he needed it or not. Produced by David Rubinson who was behind the boards for everyone from the Pointer Sisters to Herbie Hancock, it creates a slick, up to the minute style that may be too \"perfect\" for Womack's core fans. The album's first track, \"Everything's Going to Be Alright,\" meanders and sets the standard for this album's pursuit of style over substance. The two covers, \"Something You Got\" and \"I Wish It Would It Rain,\" both feature eccentric arrangements but Womack's vocals seem facile around the edges. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs an album like the Facts of Life scored on his honesty throughout, Safety Zone only has two instances that come within striking distance. \"Trust in Me,\" a self-written gem first recorded by his friend Janis Joplin, has Womack's gritty and wry vocal finally breaking free from the Rubinson's glossy production and arranging style. \"Daylight\" is one of Womack's best tracks. As Womack sings \"The real set don't get started\/'Til every one else is in,\" you hear him conflicted, but not bothered enough to stop. For the track, Rubinson's offhanded grace made the song even stronger. The main problem with Safety Zone is that it doesn't possess the earthy and challenging productions of Womack's earlier '70s albums. He too often seems straitjacketed in an attempt to curb his eccentric nature. It's also one of his strangest concepts, a marriage of trance inducing Krautrock grooves with a traditional jazz standard and some jarringly atonal musique concrete. Side A is the 20- minute title track: a slow-motion jam reminiscent of of one of Can's sidelong tracks on Tago Mago or the more avant-garde grooves of Tony Conrad and Faust's Outside the Dream Syndicate. The propulsive Jaki Liebezeit drumbeat is the foundation for a long jam session with what sounds like a dijderidoo and layers of guitar feedback. It's a massive, heavy sound, the kind that Julian Cope would devote a whole chapter to in his \"Kratrocksampler\". Side B is one long piece with three distinct movements. Beginning with those familiar, World Serpent-trademark windchimes, the listener is quickly ushered into Staple- ton's singing debut (!) in a rendition of the oft-covered traditional jazz ballad \"Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair\" This was a favorite of the recently deceased Nina Simone, and also of the avant-jazz screamer Patty Waters. Nurse With Wound's version is backed by cello drones, repetitive guitar strums and tambourine, sounding very much like The Velvet Un- derground's \"Venus in Furs\". It's such a treat to hear Steven Stapleton's multitracked vocals cover this classic song, and this eerie version rates as one of my favorites. This song and the title track prove to the naysayers that Nurse With Wound is equally adept at rock n' roll songcraft as he is at demented sound collages.
