Wailing Souls

The Wailing Souls, originally known as the Renegades, is a Jamaican reggae group formed in the late 1960s. Comprised of Winston 'Pipe' Matthews on lead vocals, Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald, and George 'Buddy' Haye, they began their career by recording backing vocals for Ernest Ranglin. After some lineup changes, they worked with Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label and recorded several singles under different names including the Classics.

In the early 1970s, they joined Bob Marley's Tuff Gong label as Pipe and The Pipers. With their powerful vocals and songwriting skills, the group gained recognition and underwent another lineup change in 1974 when Oswald Downer and Norman Davis left and Buddy Haye rejoined. They then collaborated with producer "Jo Jo" Hookim and his Channel One label before starting their own label called Massive in 1977.

During the early 1980s, the quartet (including Rudolph ‘Garth’ Dennis from Black Uhuru) worked with renowned producers such as Sly and Robbie, "Junjo" Lawes', and Linval Thompson.
