We come from the same source: I am a part of universe, and universe a part of me.\"\nThe music appearing on Áhkká (the album) simulates the dualities of ascent and descent, tension and release, inhale and exhale. Through implementing extended structures for analog and digital synthesis and processed acoustic instrumentations – strings, recorder, pipes and field recordings – Hogstrand expertly navigates these dual motions across two side-long pieces.\nThe opening \"Herein\" is slow, difficult, at times jagged and unwelcoming; just like climbing up a mountain early in the morning. Hogstrand shares that this piece is \"about surrendering and letting go of control\", especially during the last 10 minutes of the track which consist almost solely of an insistent and pulsating drone leading you to no man's land. \"Magnitude\" offers a release, glimpses of beauty, a softer, easier presence; descending, you're able to see beauty where previously you saw obstacles, perhaps the sun is up, breathtaking views in every direction... This piece is \"about all that becomes available after letting go. The opera was first performed in 2018, when the Ostrava Center for New Music organised its world premiere, which inspired a number of initiatives to create new pieces for the harmonium. The two pieces by Fredrik Rasten and Ian Mikyska (both created for a project initiated by the Prague Quiet Music Collective aimed at utilising the harmonium) are the longest of these, as well as those written for the smallest instrumentations: Mikyska's piece is for harmonium and electronics (fixed playback), while Rasten's features the harmonium along with the composer himself on two fretless electric guitars played with e-bows. Both pieces are performed by Miroslav Beinhauer, currently the only performer on the sixth-tone harmonium in the world.\nMikyska's 'In' employs sixth-tones to create shifts and discrepancies within tempered microtonal harmonies, whilst also exploring the possibilities of the harmonium's interactions with sounds of the \"real world\" through field and object recordings. 'In' comprises an organic long form music of rich timbres and playful sonic interactions between harmonic and noisy tonalities, and between natural and processed sounds. Rasten's piece 'Concord' is an extended meditation in long tones that creates vibrant harmonic interactions in its explorations of just intonation harmony. While her debut Human Glory released by Pointless Geometry explored two distinct approaches and techniques, here she finds her unique path forward: finding connections between acoustic and synthetic sounds, creating rich drone structures, slowly but intensely pulsing and resonating within the surrounding space and within each listener. \"I am very much fascinated by the processes related to the body sensations experienced through sound and its movement. I have always perceived sound as a physical phenomenon, travelling as waves of energy, as vibrations which we can literally feel and physically experience,\" she shares. \"Therefore, from the very beginning I wanted to use recordings of specific acoustic instruments, which in my opinion beautifully represent the motion itself.\" Joining Słyż and her modular synthesizer on A Vibrant Touch is a quartet of musicians playing violin (Kosma Műller), viola (Kamil Babka), cello (Anna Szmatoła) and alto saxophone (Marcus Wärnheim).The three pieces on the album explore the physicality of sound of these instruments – like the way a finger or bow presses down on the string of a cello, or the air pressure in the saxophone when someone blows inside it – as they intertwine with expert navigation of modular synthesizers by Słyż. Drawing on the work of 20th century spectral composers like Grisey or Scelsi, just intonation, drone music and microtonality for inspiration, the Polish composer uses dissonance, tension and pulse with incredible grace and power. She opens the proceedings with the patient, gliding and stirring piece \"Healing\". \"The Ruthless Act\" is slightly more ominous and grainy, as the cello and modular synthesizer mimic each other's movements to disorienting effect. The final piece \"Softness, Flashes, Floating Rage\" is a monumental composition lasting almost 26 minutes, a crowning jewel of the album. Słyż and the instrumentalists are exceedingly patient as the piece slowly unravels into a brutal, heart- and ear-shattering climax. 'Quintela' brings it to a wholly unknown field, decontextualising the bagpipe in order to elevate a personal approach, and leaving behind its male-dominated past (in which it relates to ideas of prestige, dominance or carries even sexual connotations). López expertly demonstrates its grandeur and breadth; the music on 'Quintela' ranges from barely audible sounds of air passing through the hide bag through rhythmical use of its reeds to all-encompassing drones with complex harmonic structures and vibrant overtones.\nThe narrative arc focuses on the composer's past, its people and places, and could be conceived as a journey in and of itself.
