Their roots can be traced to the early San Jose folk \/ coffeehouse scene. \u003cstrong\u003eJorma Kaukonen\u003c\/strong\u003e (Jefferson Airplane \/ Hot Tuna) was a close friend and used to jam with them. \u003cstrong\u003eBilly Dean Andrus\u003c\/strong\u003e was \u003cstrong\u003eSkip Spence's\u003c\/strong\u003e best friend since high school and they both used to perform as a folk duo in the early days.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA fantastic rhythm section, \u003cstrong\u003eCecil Bollinger\u003c\/strong\u003e on bass and \u003cstrong\u003ePat McIntire\u003c\/strong\u003e on drums rounded the band. Sadly, in 1970 \u003cstrong\u003eBilly Dean Andrus\u003c\/strong\u003e died of a drug overdose in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He was immortalized on the songs “Ode for Billy Dean” written by \u003cstrong\u003eJorma Kaukonen\u003c\/strong\u003e for Hot Tuna and “Chicago” by the Doobie Brothers. \u003cstrong\u003ePaul Ziegler\u003c\/strong\u003e ended up joining up Hot Tuna in the early 70s.
