This double album begins with Beethoven’s highly-concentrated opus 135, and concludes with Heinz Holliger’s explosions of fantasy in his 2nd String Quartet, a composition written for, and premiered by, the Zehetmair group. Bruckner’s rarely-heard C-minor quartet is, as Thomas Zehetmair notes, both touching and warm-hearted. These three pieces – the Beethoven, Bruckner and Holliger quartets – were recorded in Zurich 2010. The Hartmann Nr. 2 – “a large-scale nostalgic drama, full of wisdom” – was recorded in 2002 by an earlier quartet line-up, and this interpretation is previously unreleased. It was the last of the Zehetmair Quartett recordings to feature cellist and founding member Françoise Groben (1965- 2011). “Her energy and creativity were crucial to our development an early successes. This new production is dedicated to her memory.”\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"ECM","offers":[{"title":"CD | x2","offer_id":50526711152971,"sku":"1092057","price":27.99,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0867\/1120\/6219\/files\/9f172d6e-723e-4b80-896b-155eeb1baf52_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1728047196"},{"product_id":"johannes-brahms-string-quartets-op-51","title":"Johannes Brahms: String Quartets, Op. 51","description":"\u003cp\u003eA central fixture in the world of string quartets for the past thirty years, the Zehetmair Quartett's ECM recordings of Schumann, Hindemith, Bartok and Hartmann have received luminous praise--Gramophone lauded their Schumann as \"Record of the Year\", while The Sunday Times described their Hindemith and Bartok performances as \"playing of huge finesse in both pieces,\" calling them \"a real benchmark\". For this newest entry to their New Series catalogue, the quartet turns to Johannes Brahms's first two string quartets, Op. 51 Nos. 1 and 2--works of mature reflection and dramatic urgency that reveal Brahms's mastery of form. The composer had after all written over 20 quartets prior two these two, as he confided to a close friend. But Brahms torched them all, making these his first two of a total three published quartets. Recorded with the Zehetmair Quartett's characteristic intensity, from-memory freedom, and richly expressive depth, the performances promise fresh and deeply felt readings of these cornerstone chamber works. Regrettably, it is the last of the quartet's recordings to feature cellist Christian Elliott (1984-2025). \"It was a joy to work with him on the ever-changing character of the voices, to sense the meaning of every phrase and bring it to life. The void he leaves behind is painful - Christian, we miss you\".\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"ECM","offers":[{"title":"CD","offer_id":53441098416459,"sku":"R9784-0340","price":14.99,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0867\/1120\/6219\/files\/0028948782284.webp?v=1758474174"}],"url":"https:\/\/shop.roughtrade.com\/collections\/zehetmair-quartett.oembed","provider":"Rough Trade","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
