However, for this release he has drawn deep from his 40 year old sonic archive (from live performances both instrumental and vocal to a range of soundscapes from around the world), producing soundtracks to accompany you to the other side of ambient, through the door between your eyes. "In treading a line between real-world vibration and fantasy realms, A Handful Of Elements is able to flex Z’EV’s capabilities as both an extraordinary sonic exorcist – drawing all sorts of lively, resonant demons out of material and space – as well as his knack for a deeply spiritual, all-clanging industrial collage. The album is comprised largely of audio from his own archive of bootleg recordings and field recordings, teasing out the whines of beaten metal into slow and shrill deaths, and embedding the mournful, lo-fi cries of animals behind Z’EV’s own abstract vocal workouts. A new and bizarre world arises out of the blur, but the audio manipulations (re-pitching, slowing down) is subtle enough so that reality still pops up in tiny, eerie glints." (Rock-A-Rolla)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/z_ev_ahandfulofelementscsr182cd_1200.jpg?v=1765215880
heart-beat-ear-drum
Heart Beat Ear Drum

Heart Beat Ear Drum is a feature length documentary about the late artist and musician Z'EV (1951-2017), known for his punk era scrap metal music - an extraordinary range of acoustic phenomena resulting in trance-inducing sounds. This documentary shows how his music changed and grew and how his personal journey led him to the margins of art and the depths of heart. From 2007-2015, director Ellen Zweig followed Z'EV, shooting concerts and interviews, and collecting archival footage. In addition to interviews with Z'EV, there are interviews with a community of artists who have known him since the 1970's curators who have encountered him in the 1990's, and younger people who have only heard his recorded music or read his philosophical texts (Bob Bellerue, Bow Gamelan Ensemble, HATI, Barbara Stevini, Simone Forti, Zach Layton, Carl Stone, Ned Sublette, Johanna Went and more). Z’EV began with a "wild style", crashing and throwing pieces of metal to make sound.

He collected the materials for his art at scrap yards. 30 years later, almost all the scrap yards are closed. Z'EV now uses mallet percussion to explore acoustic phenomena. Z'EV was a crusader: for art, for trance meditation, and for living a thoughtful life. His found object aesthetic made us see art in all of the objects around us. His art activities included drumming, sculpture, gardening, even cooking. This film is divided in chapters and organised with both a narrative and a digressive structure. The structure is topic based, not strictly chronological. The first half of the film uses archival concert footage and interviews to establish Z'EV's place in the world of art and music. The second half uses contemporary concert footage and interviews to explore the changes that led Z'EV to a more contemplative style. The film ends with an extended concert. There is music throughout the film, but at the end, you are immersed in the music and in Z'EV's exploration of resonance.

Early hallucinatory ritual percussion works from the much-missed rhythmajik master Z'EV, with his 1983 Berlin Atonal performance as a bonus track (first time on any format since the original split LP with Psychic TV). This legendary album by Industrial pioneer Z'EV was originally released in 1986 (LP, Dossier), now finally available with the state-of-the-art remastering it deserves. Also included is the bonus 20 minute track 'Titan Night', recorded at Berlin Atonal in December 1983, now available here for the first time on any format since the original 1984 split LP with Psychic TV (who performed their iconic set at the same event). Z'EV performed on all-steel, custom-made percussion instruments, designed to activate the acoustics of the space. "Each track finds Z'EV creating moody and atmospheric percussion based compositions. If you're familiar with Z'EV's work you'd say these tracks are a bit more primal, stripped back, and unmanipulated. Each track takes in a set pattern of percussive elements, which he investigates over the tracks length, and these move from forceful battering onto more moody drifts, and in between the two... a worthy work from this most respected and unequalled artist" (Musique Machine).
