Reece and Cheng, college freshmen, and Lowenstein, a high school senior, learned to play—and met—through the significant network of Chicago youth arts programs, and they have their own mini-rock underground, complete with zine distros, that they describe as somewhat separate from the “adult shows” that take place at bars and DIY spaces they don’t have access to. Across the record, Horsegirl expertly play with texture, shape and shade, showcasing their fondness for improvisation and experimentation. One can hear elements of the ‘80s and ‘90s independent music the band love so deeply and sincerely—the scuzzy melodicism of what used to be called “college rock,” the cool, bubbly space-age sheen of the ‘90s vamps on lounge and noir; the warm, noisy roar of shoegaze; the economical hooks and rhythms of post-punk. There’s even a bit of no wave mixed in for good measure. It inhabits an edgier world.”

Electricity was produced by the Grammy Award and Mercury Prize nominated British synthpop group Hot Chip, a collaboration born out of mutual admiration watching each other on festival stages, as well as a shared love of Francis Bebey and Giorgio Moroder. The fruits of their labor reveal a gleaming, supercharged, Afrofuturist blinder. Electricity is the first album Ibibio Sound Machine have made with external producers since the group’s formation in London in 2013 by Williams and saxophonist Max Grunhard. True, 2017’s Uyai featured mixdown guests including Dan Leavers, aka Danalogue, the keyboard jedi in future-jazz trio The Comet Is Coming, but Hot Chip and Ibibio Sound Machine worked together more deeply throughout the process, collaborating fully. Along the way, the team conjured a kaleidoscope of delights that include resonances of Jonzun Crew, Grace Jones, William Onyeabor, Tom Tom Club, Kae Tempest, Keith LeBlanc, The J.B.’s, Jon Hassell’s “Fourth World,” and Bootsy Collins.

The hook of opener “Protection From Evil” has Williams wielding a massive synth line from Hot Chip’s Al Doyle like a spiritual shield against unspecified, malign forces unspecified because Williams is speaking in tongues. Her lyrics are onomatopoeic: their meaning is defined in her energetic delivery. As Electricity takes off, so do Williams’ words towards a brighter future, alternating between English and Ibibio, sometimes within verses, and propelled by Joseph Amoako’s unabating afrobeat. She digs into this sentiment further on single “All That You Want,” coolly assuring her romantic interest while also requesting reciprocity. Meanwhile, Scott Baylis’ playful Juno synth guides the listener’s feet along the dancefloor.

Electricity is a deep and seamless realization of Williams’ and Grunhard’s ambitious founding manifesto to combine the singularly rhythmic character of the Ibibio language which Williams spoke growing up in Nigeria with a range of traditional West African music and more modern electronic sounds. While the band enjoys veering further into electronic territory with the help of mutuals like Hot Chip, Grunhard emphasizes, “For us, it’s not just a matter of embracing new technology. What’s key is to keep the music grounded in African roots.” Ibibio Sound Machine best exemplify this on Electricity’s “Freedom.” That track was inspired by the water-drumming rhythms of Cameroon’s Baka women, which in turn fueled its lyrics, which in turn prompted Hot Chip and Ibibio Sound Machine to layer joyfully kinetic electronic counterparts on top in the studio. As the track culminates with the mantra of “rage, hope, cope, soul,” it’s clear that Ibibio Sound Machine have channeled, harnessed, and distilled these words as guiding principles, both for the album and for the turbulent world that awaits it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/cf9c19fb-c273-466d-9466-f33ab7b1cf89_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726553827
the-overdub
The Overdub

The Overdub is a reimagining of Yard Act's Mercury Prize shortlisted debut album The Overload. Jumbo always had (and still does have) an excellent dub/ reggae selection - and actually released reggae records on its own 'Jumbo label' imprint back in the 70s (how ace is that!?).I had a grounding in reggae from my dad who'd turned me onto the likes of Burning Spear and Linton Kwesi Johnson, but didn't really know much about dub music beyond a Bob Marley record produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry he'd given me called African Herbsman. The meeting of an Academy Award-nominated actress and singer, and a Brit Award-winning producer and musician, feels like the tale of two distant stars coming together and forming their own constellation.

It all started with a FaceTime call from Butler’s North London kitchen to Buckley’s mountaintop residence in County Kerry, with their friendship growing from an unlikely shared love of Killarney and the small island of Valentia where Butler would go on holiday as a boy. A mutual friend had a feeling they might spark. Buckley had been listening to Old Wow by Sam Lee, produced by Bernard, in the downtime between rehearsals for the National Theatre’s televised production of Romeo and Juliet.

Butler had seen Jessie perform a song on an American chat show in promotion of 2018’s Wild Rose. “I remember clocking just how much character there was in her voice and how freely she expressed it,” recalls Bernard. If the project grew from a shared love and deep ancestral attachment to Ireland - Butler’s parents come from Dun Laoghaire, one of the coastal towns of Dublin Bay - then these songs swoop out from the Emerald Isle’s west coast, taking home Appalachian blues and delicate modal jazz from across the Atlantic, and taking in the bullfighting arenas of Andalusia along the way. The first song the pair wrote together, ‘The Eagle and the Dove’ - named after a book by the interwar proto-feminist writer Vita Sackville-West - set the tone for the project, and also set in motion a sense of adventure that permeates For All Our Days That Tear The Heart.

Invoking the passionate theatre of flamenco, augmented by Jessie’s sumptuous, soaring vocals, the pair recorded the intuitive dance moves of Juana Jimenez with a microphone placed on the floor of the Birchanger Village Hall in Essex of all places. There’s a physicality and a flow to the songs that somehow bear testament to the manner in which Jessie and Bernard threw themselves into making the album. Amid the constant exchange of ideas, songs fomented at speed. The sublime ‘20 Years A Growing’ takes its title from Maurice O’Sullivan’s celebrated 1933 account of life in Great Blasket Island off the coast of County Kerry.

The more personal, piano-led ‘Seven Red Rose Tattoos’, captures the essence of loss and longing, with Jessie’s vocal lines a counterpoint to Byron Wallen’s doleful, muted trumpet: “I wanted it to be like a conversation with the ghosts of my thoughts,” says Buckley. The dynamic title track is built around words that Jessie had written during a low period whilst in Chicago filming Fargo, with her extraordinary vocal blazing an emotional vapour trail through Bernard’s chamber-folk arrangement. And the pair draw inspiration from the ensemble work of seminal jazz-folk innovators Pentangle on songs like ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’ and ‘Sweet Child’, as the rhythm section of Misha Mullov-Abbado and Chris Vatalaro effectively converse with Jessie’s bewitching vocals. “Right now, I feel like I’ll never make another album again,” says Jessie, “because I can’t imagine another album happening the way this one did. It’s amazing that it even happened once. This obscure, organic, odd little thing that just found us.” For All Our Days That Tear The Heart is a remarkable work of windswept beauty and catharsis, and given that it seemed to come out of nowhere, it also feels like a gift. “More than anything, I wanted it to be joyous – properly joyous – because there is such joy in Jessie, there really is,” says Bernard. “In spite of the darkness and the intensity in these songs, I’m just flying when I listen back to them.”

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/6f2d43fb-1399-476e-b721-3ec0e21b9ecf_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726667488
tired-of-liberty
Tired of Liberty

Returning for the third time to the studio of Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey, Hebden Bridge’s The Lounge Society are back; this time, with the mindset of crafting a debut album conceived out of desire, raised by collaborative muscle-memory, and kept beating, by the sacred-heart of emotional-spirit.

Recorded over two weeks in November 2021, Tired of Liberty is a stunningly ubiquitous snapshot of instrumental meltdown, and timeless adolescence. We tried to listen to 69 Love Songs in the van once but there were simply too many songs. The one that resonated with all of us is this one. It’s our favourite one on there. A fun fact about our performance on this song is that we all play percussion on it.

So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings

- We were originally going to cover You’re the Voice by John Farnham, but when it came down to it in the studio, it just didn’t sound right. We decided to have a go at covering Caroline Polachek’s famous song ‘So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings’ instead. A fun fact about this track is that on one of the layers of the guitar solo, May is actually playing the guitar through the piano. Lewis is doing lead vocals on this one.

Us

- This song is originally by Regina Spektor. We all absolutely love Regina Spektor, she’s great. We tried to do a wonderful song some justice. When you’re recording four tracks in one day it’s a tough thing to do. The track is also much faster than we originally thought. We started by playing it slower and then had to speed up on the later takes. A really cool fact about this take is that we recorded it on my birthday (I am Charlie the drummer) One of the first takes isn’t of us playing Us, it’s actually of everyone singing happy birthday to me. It didn’t make the final cut though.

Happier Than Ever

- Another classic song. I think we’ve all spoken at length about our admiration for Billie Eilish and her brilliant song ‘Happier Than Ever’. I first heard it when we were in the studio recording our album ‘Ants From Up There’. I was delighted to hear such a wonderful song. It is the only one of these tracks that we have ever performed live in concert. It may well remain that way. An interesting side note about this take is that although I’m (Charlie the drummer) credited on playing the drums and vocals on this track, I only play for half of it. One half of the take is performed by a computer that studied my playing and performed an imitation of my drumming.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/2d470045-adbf-463e-bd8e-78cec601e83c_thumbnail_4096.png?v=1727392302
a-hairdryer-open-the-floodgates
A Hairdryer / Open the Floodgates

A selection of tracks taken from The Smile’s sold-out debut live performances at Magazine, London in January 2022.
