Returning to acoustic guitars and 60s baroque pop tones, Davenport recently tracked twelve new songs in his home studio in Los Angeles. He takes us on an exclusive tour of colourful stories, both comic and tragic. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe resulting \u003ci\u003eEpisodes \u003c\/i\u003emarks his eighth proper album. Davenport's evocative, new material provides both an escape from and an unusual commentary on turbulent times. From digital antagonists in 'Holograms' to waltzing oligarchs in 'Billionaires' to an enigmatic nudist in 'Naked Man', many offbeat characters populate the funny little world within Davenport's verses. His vocals are distinctively smooth at times, while at others, a slightly cheeky, more dramatic baritone takes over. His patented happy\/sad sensibility remains along with the occasional jazz chord.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile \u003ci\u003eEpisodes\u003c\/i\u003e features Davenport on multiple instruments, he did not go it alone. Several guest musicians were crucial to the production. Drummer Graeme Gibson's casual feel graces several tracks, notably the Kinksy 'It's You'. The samba-tinged 'Easy Listeners' has that tropical flavor Davenport's been known to dabble in, this time aided by impeccable percussionist Andres Renteria (Jose Gonzales, Rodrigo Amarante). Meanwhile, the Turkish Psych-inspired 'Strange Animal' showcases futuristic organ riffing by Aaron M. Olson (L.A. Takedown), who produced Davenport's previous album ('Blue Motel' by Bart \u0026amp; The Bedazzled). Other longtime bandmates, Jessica Espeleta (bass) and Wayne Faler (lead guitar), both make appearances. Perhaps the standout track of the album is its quietest; the Brit-folk-styled 'Alice Arrives'. Davenport's autumnal vocal and guitar are adeptly accompanied by Dina Maccabee's original string arrangement, which morphs from earnest baroque to playful modern and back again. His now 20-year-old \u003ci\u003eGame Preserve\u003c\/i\u003e album should gain an appreciative new audience with its first ever vinyl release.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile the album's sonic palette may be firmly planted in 1970, Davenport's songwriting covers a sizable landscape of moods and reflections. From the quasi-flamenco intro of 'Sweetest Game' to the somber Wurlitzer of 'Nowhere Left To Go', to the 12-string shimmer of 'Intertwine', \"Game Preserve\" tells a story of young love, lost innocence and redemption, crossing borders and oceans along the way.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eReleased in 2003 on family-run Oakland label Antenna Farm, the ultra-analogue sounding \u003ci\u003eGame Preserve\u003c\/i\u003e was only made available on digital formats, including CD. Copies were later pressed by labels in Germany and Spain; the latter being one country the album actually did well in, establishing Bart Davenport with a small but loyal fanbase he still enjoys today. Two European tours as support for Kings of Convenience also helped gain a foothold on the continent. Back in the US, however, Davenport and his sophomore album remained quite obscure.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLimited promotion meant it did little, but for the music lovers that heard it, the album undoubtedly remains a classic of the era, deserving far more. Twenty years on, it now finally receives its vinyl debut. \"I personally think it holds up well,\" says Bart of the album two decades later. \"The idea was to make something that could be an homage to late 60s\/early 70s West Coast pop but hopefully timeless as well. Years on, I hear it as just that. It was a colourful and brief period of my life that felt at times like it could last forever. I discovered the joy of working in a proper studio with a perfect cast of characters.
