With a dedicated global fan base including the UK's jazz funk and jazz dance scene to Japan's concert halls, the power couple continues to make waves in the industry – Flora's 'If You Will' (2022) album was even nominated for a Grammy! The duo met and came together musically in Sambalanço and the Sambrasa Trio. The mixture of Airto's rural Brazilian background and percussion talents and Flora's classical training and involvement in the underground Bossa Nova movement, created a unique blend of sounds that resonates across generations. They have not only collaborated with music legends like Miles Davis and Chick Corea but have also produced ground-breaking music alongside the likes of Hermeto Pascoal. Despite facing numerous challenges, including Flora's arrest and incarceration in 1974, the duo's close connection with friends-musicians like Thelonius Monk and Cannonball Adderley, their persistence and absolute passion for music have propelled them to the pinnacle of success. They worked with renowned musicians like Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, McCoy Tyner, George Duke and producers such as Orin Keepnews and Creed Taylor. The title track on Side A is composed by Waldron, and is a dark, brooding heavy groove typical of his early 70s sound. ‘Black Forest’ on side B is written by Hino and is a vivid and energetic piece, layered and textured with dense percussion and Hino’s signature trumpet tone. Mal Waldron started out in the early 1950s working extensively on the Prestige label with notable figures such as Gene Ammons, Jackie McLean and Charles Mingus. Most famously, he worked with Billie Holiday before leaving the States in the mid-60s and relocating to Europe where he established himself as a major figure working across many countries including France, Italy, and Germany, where he made his home in Munich. In 1969, Waldron recorded the first releases for two major European jazz labels, ECM and Enja, before visiting Japan on tour for the first time in 1970. Waldron instantly fell in love with Japan and, over the next three decades, extensively toured and recorded there for numerous labels. Terumasa Hino is one of the towering figures of post-war modern jazz in Japan. Coming to prominence via the Hideto Shiraki and Sadao Watanabe bands in the mid-60s, Hino soon emerged as one of the prime movers in new jazz generation that changed the direction of jazz in Japan. He explored a more open, freer, and improvised sound, mixing psychedelic and rock elements with freeform and post-bop jazz. Hino recorded for many of the leading jazz labels of the era including Columbia, Three Blind Mice, and East Wind and would go on to relocate to the US in the mid-70s, immersing himself with the leading fusion players of the New York scene including Larry Corryell, Mtume, Al Foster, Dave Liebman and many more. In the early 80s, Hino’s jazz funk tracks were dancefloor smashes on the UK jazz dance scene. Joining Waldron and Hino on ‘Reminicient Suite’ is a band made up of the very best Japanese jazzman of their day: Takeo Uematsu on sax, Terumasa’s brother, Motohiko Hino, on drums, and the legendary bass master, Isao Suzuki. Together, they deliver one of the very best albums of the era, a richly articulated and dynamic session that exemplifies the very best that the Japanese jazz scene was doing in the early 1970s. ‘Reminicent Suite’ is pressed on 200g vinyl presented in a gatefold sleeve plus obi strip, with new photos by Tadayuki Naito; translated original sleeve notes; and a 7500-word essay including interview with Terumasa Hino from Tony Higgins, co-curator of the J Jazz Masterclass Series. The explosion of Internet connectivity has made what used to seem rare commonplace, but also opened up a world of previously unknown musical riches, and enabled enterprising fans to make contact with obscure figures that they might've imagined would be forever inaccessible. Whereas collectors used to prize independent labels, now it's all about the 'private press': records released by the same folks that made them, in tiny numbers, without distribution, and promotion usually limited to giving them out by hand at gigs. Such were the releases of Breakaway. Breakaway recorded two LPs. in the late 70's these re-issues tell the story of a magnificent live band that made waves across St. Louis, Ill and further beyond to cities such as Boston and Las Vegas. A story that has come full circle after 35 years...Their self titled first album Breakaway touches showbiz glitz, while songs like 'Understudy DJ' and 'There's a New Group In Town', caught the disco vibe, as pretty much everything else did in 1977, and it's these that have been delighting twenty-first century dancers, as the more than decade-long mania for all things 'disco' sends enterprising DJs and collectors looking way beyond the canon of classics. 'Straight On To The Top!' was a more ambitious album, Breakaway had more experience and the potential of a record deal seemed closer and more realistic. 'Work With The Music' has something of a mutant disco feel, and would certainly fit with today's music on the trendy dance floors of East London, Williamsburg NY and Shibuya Tokyo 'Breakaway' had a sophisticated funk / fusion sound that wouldn't have sounded amiss on many a big-budget major label album project. After the release of 'Straight On To The Top!', the band entered negotiations with Bang Records in the US, but the A&R department fell apart, and the hopes of a record deal faded...Fast-forward 35 years; the enthusiasm is still the same...

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/3c9cd1ee-9e51-4fd2-a01d-642281ae8666_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727382950
this-is-love
This is Love

Many Hawaiian records released in the early 70s through to the early 80s have that authentic AOR sound that so much timeless music from The West Coast of America has from that golden period when 'The Canyon' was bristling with legends. Born to a royal lineage in Ibadan, Prince Eji Oyewole has had a career as a flautist, saxophonist and sometime bandleader spanning well over half a century. He trained both in Nigeria and then at Trinity the prestigious music school in London, and his life as an itinerant musician also saw him living for extensive periods in Geneva, Hamburg and in Lyon. While for many years Fela Kuti (with whom Eji played) and King Sunny Ade commanded international attention to the exclusion of most other Nigerian musicians, as if there was only room for one Nigerian superstar at a time on the world stage, on the domestic scene things were very different. Eji was part of the huge craze for 'highlife', a generic term that in fact subsumed many different styles, united in their fusion of traditional west African forms with jazz influences and electric instruments, and in the bands' working practices as entertainers at the nation's numerous hotel / nightclubs. As this cracking album, recorded for EMI Nigeria at the tail end of the '70s and now remastered, reveals, Eji's version of highlife was even more distinctive than most, eschewing the usual emphasis on guitars for a brasher, horn-laden sound, seemingly influenced as much by American funk as it was jazz, and of course with the heavy percussive undertow central to most African music. This gave Eji a chance to shine, and there are some scorching solos as well as tight ensemble playing across the four lengthy (to ears accustomed to the three-minute pop song) songs. Eji also played piano on the session. The material has an element of social commentary (Oil Boom and Unity In Africa) and should help feed the seemingly insatiable appetites of the many who have been turned onto African music by the enterprising efforts of devoted collectors, labels and fellow fans. Surely one of the few musicians who has played with Fela, Miles Davis and Bob Marley, Eji Oyewole still plays regularly in Lagos, recently had an album of new material out with his current band The Afrobars, and has been a member of Faaji Agba, a super-group that has toured internationally and been dubbed 'the Nigerian Buena-Vista Social Club'.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/31b5869a-5da1-4903-ab9f-e27f5eeb0726_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727388187
i-got-it-dj-spinna-remix-bring-it-to-a-halt-jake-one-remix
I Got It (DJ Spinna Remix) / Bring It To A Halt (Jake One Remix)

It's fair to say that veteran Portland rapper Vursatyl has been making major waves of late, with praise and support for his 'Crooked Straights' coming from Kenny Dope, Okayplayer, 2DopeBoyz and Urb magazine among many others. Mfojo, the man known as Rim Kwaku Obeng. As well as heralding the arrival as solo artist of an exciting new drummer, the title of his 1977 debut, 'Rim Arrives', also makes reference to the long struggle Kwaku had in getting to that point. To say that he 'paid his dues' is an understatement! A member of one of Ghana's most popular bands, the Uhuru Dance Band, during a period when 'every song was a hit', the recording studios of LA were even more alluring to an aspirant musician, and he followed his bandmate, Duke Oketa, there for a session in 1973. Despite having hired a massive string section, Oketa failed to provide charts for the session, and it was postponed for a week, with Kwaku being asked to write them instead. He turned it around, pocketed $700, and won the admiration of Quincy Jones who was hanging out at A&M's studios and asked Kwaku to join him ... only to back off when Oketa intervened, threatening a lawsuit if Kwaku walked. That scuppered opportunity was as nothing compared to the disaster that next befell him: having flown to London with Duke's band, to record with 'a band called Traffic' and a young singer-songwriter called Joan Armatrading, Kwaku found himself marooned in the city without money, documentation or friends. Oketa had checked out of their hotel the first night, and had Kwaku's passport and luggage with him. Despite the sympathy of the hotel staff, he found himself on the streets, and thus in 1973 began a six-month period as a homeless, destitute, undocumented stranger. That Kwaku by chance managed to meet Armatrading, who helped him get his life back on track, by chance passing Ronnie Scott's where she was playing, was an even more unlikely twist in the fate of this promising young musician. He never found out why Oketa had abandoned him, but he fulfilled his promise, recording Rim Arrives in San Francisco in 1977. That year was the zenith of disco, and pretty much anybody who entered a recording studio that year cut a disco record. Rim was no exception, his Ghanaian rhythms tailor-made for the percussive energy that was fuelling the clubs of the day. With a mixture of hot LA session musicians and African emigrés, he cut an album that very much captures the spirit of its time. As well as kit drums, conga and an array of percussive instruments, the multitalented bandleader also played piano and clavinet on the sessions. Throw in some tight horn riffs, Fela-style call and response vocals, and you have an album that fits the current mania for both vintage African music and ever-more obscure disco perfectly. Cuts like Brushing Means Making Love, Gas Line and Believe In Yourself and have been tearing up dancefloors in the hands of specialist DJs for some time: now it's time for the rest of the world to catch up. Also included is 'International Funk', a very in-demand 12" he recorded later as Rim and The Believers, with drum machines and synths in full 1980s effect! Serious Afro-disco heat here, with the originals fetching silly money, these records were overlooked at the time, with the glut of amazing music that characterized the era; but, nearly four decades on, it's fair to say that, Rim really has arrived.LP - Double LP with Download.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/4641aa64-d581-419e-a0cc-6750f78b0948_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727390004
grow-slow
Grow Slow

There was once a young African princess who embarked on a huge journey in pursuit of her dreams. The Princess is Sena who came from Accra, Ghana to a festival in the centre of Budapest, Hungary and met a musical wizard by the name of DJ Vadim... that was in 2005. What happened that night was the meeting not only of like minded souls, but the beginning of a future journey into sound and space. Grammy Award shows, sell out arena shows for Sena's band in Hungary - Irie Mafia - plus the birth of her beautiful daughter Kekeli and the release of her second solo album 'Lots Of Trees' on French Soulbeats Records; world wide shenanagins for DJ Vadim with his groups, One Self, The Electric and many solo projects... Perhaps a good analogy would be the perfect pasta. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like Salsoul Hustle, Tangerine and You’re Just The Right Size by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved. Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, Ten Percent just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public - the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets. In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before. Recorded and released in 1986, ?Approach? is both sophisticated and experimental in equal measure, balancing serene ambient moments with thunderous and dynamic explosions of energy. ?Approach? was originally issued on the Art Union label and sees bass uber-maestro Isao Suzuki, percussion and drumming icon Masahiko Togashi, and keyboard wizard Hideo Ichikawa join together with neophyte guitarist Akira Shiomoto to deliver a first-class showcase of contemporary jazz across five tracks, demonstrating their individual talents working as one unified ensemble. Suzuki?s deeply resonant and pliant basslines move sinuously across the album, supporting Togashi?s ebullient flashes of percussion and Ichikawa?s lush textures and colourations; topping it all off is the young Shiomoto?s guitar adding melodic texture and shine. Opening with ?Make Trip?, Ichikawa?s gentle introduction makes way for a change of gear as Suzuki?s bass drives the band along before Togashi?s drum and percussion centrepiece solo leads to the outro. The plaintive and bluesy ?Otari? follows next, with Ichikawa?s piano flowing around and between the rhythmic undertow from Suzuki and Togashi. Things turn slightly more experimental on ?Mysterious? as Suzuki, the piece?s composer, turns to arco bass effects and Ichikawa employs synthesiser and electronic textures to add colour to the palette. Opening with a boldly stark solo piano part, ?Tornado? is written by Ichikawa and continues with a freely improvised section from the group as Togashi?s characteristically inventive drum solo once again leads the piece to its culmination before seeing Suzuki re-join to conclude. The album?s closer, ?East Words?, written by Togashi, is a magnificent example of the ensemble?s interplay and control; a beautifully modulated intro from piano, bass and drums opens the piece with the freshness and light of a morning sunrise. Ichikawa?s use of synth strings reveals a new and unexpected intensity to the performance, as the track builds further into a head nodding, bass driven exploration of Ichikawa?s piano and Togashi?s finely paced percussion. As an album closer, it couldn?t be more perfect. This is the first time this album has been reissued since it?s original release 36 years ago. Born in Tokyo in 1933, Isao Suzuki learned to play on United States military bases and played early on in his career with Shotaro Moriyasu, Hidehiko Matsumoto, and Sadao Watanabe. Returning to Japan, he began expanding his instrumental repertoire, playing cello and piccolo bass, and opened a jazz club in Osaka in 1987. Film is the latest and very welcome release by keyboard player, composer and producer Jessica Lauren, the long-time friend and collaborator of IMPRESS!VE Collective's Greg Boraman. After assuming A&R control of Freestyle Records, Boraman's first signing was ‘Jessica Lauren Four’ (2012) and also released ‘Almeria’ (2018). Both albums exhibited her minimalist approach: Jessica's music is always sophisticated and complex but also accessible and listenable. ‘FILM’ has a fascinating backstory, inasmuch as it was originally recorded in 1997 and saw a CD only release in 1999 via the MELT 2000 label. That CD had been a firm favourite of Greg Boraman’s since then, and he recalls ‘I had it loaded onto my iPod and each time a track from Film came up on shuffle I thought just how much I thought it should be re-issued and given the attention it deserves'. Jessica had also harboured plans to do something with this project, even treating the recordings to a 24 bit analog remastering by Guy Davie at Electric, but it remained on the shelf – until now. In 2024, this 27-year-old album is quite remarkable in that it sounds simply and stunningly contemporary, and fits seamlessly with the current soundscape of explorative, genre bending 21st century jazz music. Blending modal jazz, electronica, library music, field recordings and more, it melds acoustic and electric pianos, harpsichord with synthesisers, electronica and digital techniques as though it’s the most natural combination in the world. This release marks the 4th volume in the A Journey Into Deep Jazz portfolio in the If Music cannon released on BBE and will be available on a double vinyl LP and as a digital release. Deep Jazz volume 4 continues to meet the high quality bar set by the previous releases in the series and the If Music presents... catalogue. Its global diversity of artists is represented in the tracklisting. This nine track offering ranges from the slow, lush Bobby Hutchersonesque, never repressed 'Process of a Cloud' from Japanese Drummer George Hirota to Oakland artist Phavia Kujichagulia's Congolese themed, black consciousness Fancy Footwork and the mighty combination of Ginger Baker and Ransome Kuti on their co-written N'Kon Kini N'Kon N'Kon, a chunky, Lo-Slung Afro-Beat celebration of Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Republic. Jean-Claude's excellent track record of creating and curating compilation albums and rediscovering rare gems and private presses for re-issue follows a philosophy of cross-genre music appreciation that can be traced even further back than to his time as one half of the innovative, genre bending, DJ and production duo The Amalgamation of Soundz. Jean-Claude has been a mainstay of London's Black Music scene for some four decades with his record shop, his shows on NTS and Soho Radio, his excellent 'In Conversation with...' series of chat shows, his Djing and curation of event stages at Across the Tracks Festival and, of course, his excellent compilations.
