As we're sure most of you will know, Tom was the front man of the legendary US psychedelic/folk band Pearls Before Swine. Recording for the ESP label in the 60s, then moving to Reprise, PBS left us a legacy of strange, beautiful music. In the early 70s Tom went solo, recording more albums for Reprise and Blue Thumb. As a school-kid he came third in a talent show in which fellow schoolboy, Bobby Zimmerman (yes, that Bobby Zimmerman), came fifth! He played gigs with Pink Floyd, Crazy Horse, Patti Smith and many more before calling time in 1976, and becoming a Civil Rights lawyer.

Renewed interest in Tom and PBS in the late 90s led to him making some staggeringly good live appearances. Then in 1999 he released his first album for over 25 years. The prophetically titled A Journal Of The Plague Year.

Featuring appearances from Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang (of Galaxie 500 fame) and Masakai Batoh of Japanese band Ghost, came out on the British label Woronzow to great acclaim. This is the first ever reissue of A Journal Of The Plague Year and it comes with the original artwork and lyric insert, as a limited vinyl edition of 400 and a CD version of just 200.

Tragically, Tom died in 2018 aged 70. It was a joy to count him as a friend. Blue Matter would like to thank Lynn Madison-Rapp & Ade Shaw for their help with making this reissue a reality.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/product_id._df436905_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1726593243
inexactness
Inexactness

For those of you who are not familiar with Tony's work, here's a brief description...

As a teenager Tony worked in the shipyards of the North East, and by night he was playing guitar in the blues clubs of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. His first releases came in the mid 60s with The Answers, whose 'It's Just A Fear' has become the stuff of legend. By 1967 Tony was in London and was asked to join The Misunderstood, a bunch of psychedelic Californians brought to the UK by one John Peel. Tony wrote and played for the band until they returned to The USA. After this, Tony formed his own band, High Tide.

They recorded two albums for Liberty, the amazing Sea Shanties in 1969, and High Tide a year later, both featuring Tony's unique guitar stylings and the brilliant violin of Simon House. High Tide split in the early 70s, and almost 30 years later, in 2001 legendary bassist Ade Shaw persuaded his old pal Tony to bring some new songs into the studio.

With a band comprising Ade on bass, Andy Ward on drums, Nick Saloman on guitar & Matt Kelly on violin, Tony rolled back the years and Inexactness was born. The Desperate Ones‘1906’ was released in 2012 on the Oh Roy! label as a download only. Considering it’s a work of such quality it’s amazing it should have taken so many years before finally making appearance on LP and CD. Those of you who heard Eliza Skelton’s incredible ‘The Lookerer’ album, which came out on Blue Matter in 2023, will be delighted to learn that ‘1906’ is an album created by Eliza and guitarist extraordinaire Paul Simmons (The Bevis Frond, The Cravats, The Alchemysts, Oddfellow’s Casino). This fantastic early work combines a dark cinematic mix of brooding folk and rock, with shades of Ennio Morricone in its gothic western appeal. These unique arrangements, which feature Eliza’s vocal mastery, are complimented by an ensemble of excellent and eclectic players.‘1906’ is an incredibly strong record that we at Blue Matter are proud to be releasing, so our gratitude must go to Eliza & Paul for granting us access to this splendid album and allowing us to put it out for all to hear.
