Nevertheless, the fruits of that training are apparent in Baum's music today, most notably in his countertenor vocal style. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAlthough Baum's commitments as a chorister and a music scholar allowed him little time for creative pursuits of his own, he and classmate Nat Jones (guitar) used the scarce time available to them to write. They were active on the Oxford music scene throughout their teenage years, frequently playing venues such as The Jericho Tavern and The Cellar, accompanied by their friend Ebyan Rezgui (saxophone\/flute), amongst others. It was at this time that they met Jake Kavanagh (drums) and Tim Davies (trumpet), a school friend of Jones who recorded many of their early demos. Though the songwriting is now done primarily by Baum, at Thyrsis' core is over a decade of collaborations and Friendships.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHaving left school, these 5 went their separate ways to University. Baum retired music and began his studies in Philosophy at Cambridge University. However, Baum soon felt a desire to write again, and finding his Cambridge education only a little less confining than New College, he dropped out of Cambridge halfway through his first year and moved to London. Since then, Baum has been slowly developing an individual approach to songwriting, with the assistance of a number of old collaborators: an approach shaped by both the \"love and resentment\" he feels for traditional classical music. Thyrsis now perform as a 6 piece, completed by Frank Wright (double bass).\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThey have released 2 songs with Broadside Hacks since 2021. The first of those was Baum's adaptation of the folk song \"Brigg Fair\" for their \"Songs Without Authors Vol. 1\" compilation (It featured Katy J Pearson, Daragh Lynch (Lankum), Naima Bock, Yorkston Thorne Khan amongst others). The second of those was a recording of Thyrsis' original song \"Godstow Bridge\", recorded live at Real World Studios for British Underground's short film \"The Broadside Hack\". \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTheir early-2022 single release 'Rosalia' saw a collaboration with producer Taylor Skye (Jockstrap), the 2 having been introduced over Zoom during the pandemic.  Their most recent single \"Durnovaria\" was recorded at Laylow with the production assistance of Nina Madley, and features harp from Slow Dance signing Aga Ujma (Crack Cloud\/Broadside Hacks). Noting that \"Durnovaria\" was the Roman name for the town of  Dorchester in Dorset, Baum remarks that \"with it being the home of both my mother and Thomas Hardy, it's a place I think about often\". After reading Robert Graves' Claudius novels and his translation of Suetonius, Baum was inspired to explore the Roman history of the region. Speaking about the track, Katy J Pearson said, “The beginnings of Willie of Winsbury are utterly fascinating and the fact the song has survived hundreds of years is wonderful. The lyrics to me have a big feminist undertone which is very forward thinking for the 1700s”. Founded by Campbell Baum of Domino-signed band Sorry, through the lockdown Broadside Hacks spiralled into something much greater than what was initially anticipated to be a club night in Camden Town. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe concept for ‘\u003ci\u003eSongs Without Authors Vol.1\u003c\/i\u003e’ features re-works of traditional songs with no set origin, where either the song or the lyrics has no known author. It is a way to return to how folk music existed before the Victorian song collectors began putting everything down on paper and codifying the tradition. It is bringing life back into the songs, making them live and breathe again, within the singer’s own right. An album that starts in the deep roots of folk, later flowing into contemporary realms, there’s a passionate belief throughout that these songs can captivate and hold relevance today, toying with the definition of folk music in 2021 with incredible style. “\u003ci\u003eSongs Without Authors\u003c\/i\u003e was put together by a mixed company of musicians who share, above all, a passion for honouring our heritage in song. As a toddler, Grassie recalls, he’d sneak out of bed to eavesdrop on the family’s living room sessions. Once able to help carry gear he’d accompany his father’s ceilidh band on weekends. At eight years old he asked for a drumkit, but was given a guitar instead. His love of traditional music “started as far back as I can remember,” he says. “Some friends from St Roch’s Comhaltas would hide their instruments from school friends, but I’d never really shy away from it”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDoubling down on his innate talent for fingerstyle playing through tutorage under his father’s bandmate Matt Smith, Fleadhs and Ceol Mhor, he was imbued with a deep appreciation of the form’s potential.  “I was around musicians, young and old, playing with such skill,” he says. “I’d go to see a rock band, but I wouldn’t be as enamoured as I was when I’d go to a gig that my dad was going to, and the guys would be absolutely flying on their instruments. It wasn’t ‘til meeting the folk in the London scene that I appreciate the academic side of it, it was all feeling back then”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt was while visiting his uncle in Galway, bouncing between the hedgerows in his converted ambulance, that Grassie first heard the music of Bert Jansch. Grassies’s father had recently left home and was living in a cabin in the woods. “The darkness in that music and the raw approach on the guitar immediately spoke to me,” he says. “I was really drawn in by lyrics and poetry and turns of phrase too, and that’s all very apparent and immediate when it’s just a guitar and voice, you can really take it all in.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMoving to Glasgow at 17, Grassie fell into the city’s burgeoning electronic scene, and for a time the fiddle was left to gather dust. The guitar however remained a constant companion. Naturally, after then relocating to London – first for a few pandemic-curtailed months in 2020 and then for good in 2022 – it didn’t take long for Grassie to establish himself as one of the keystones of the city’s erupting young folk scene.
