Certain sections of this music seemed to convey a vast turbulent cosmic fire, while others a peaceful sunlit place. Most of these I'd found in the \"easy listening\" section at the record store, where I'd noticed another familiar name that would consistently pop up: \u003cstrong\u003eBurt Bacharach\u003c\/strong\u003e. I'd become enamoured with him as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFast forward three decades later to this scenario: \u003cstrong\u003ePhil Bonnet\u003c\/strong\u003e (our guitarist for the entirety of the '90s) and I are talking at Solid Sound. Phil is very excited to have recently gotten his hands on the \u003cstrong\u003eBurt Bacharach\u003c\/strong\u003e box set, and we are listening to it in the control room. As we sit there together, blissing out to the sublime strains of \"\u003cem\u003eOur Day Will Come\u003c\/em\u003e,\" he looks over at me and says, \"I never use this word, but he's a... (pause)... (sheepishly)... genius.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHow perfect was it that Phil and I were in a dissonant\/abrasive\/aggressive rock band together, and yet our strongest convergence was in the area of \"easy listening?\" Indeed all four members of this '90s incarnation of \u003cem\u003eCHEER-ACCIDENT\u003c\/em\u003e shared a deep passion for this music, and there were murmurs of dedicating an entire album to this genre, starting in the mid-'90s. Part of what's new for Reid is her expanded sonic palette, which can make it difficult to tell where her bow work and Halvorson's electronics diverge. \"As a string player, I used to be anti-electronics,\" she says. \"I love the acoustic cello sound. This is an excellent, stereo recording of the band performing in a relatively small hall; the volume balance between the instruments is not perfect, but there is no other recording by Soft Machine that sounds as much like the band are performing right in front of you! Additionally, the label were able to improve in a modest way the not-perfect balance between the instruments on this edition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSoft Machine's two concerts at the Henie-Onstad Art Center near Oslo, Norway, in late February 1971 were special in several respects. Leppin led and arranged music for The Heart Sutra, an ensemble that presented works by pedal steel guitarist and composer Susan Alcorn, and has also recorded with artists including Oren Ambarchi, Eyvind Kang, Priests, Marissa Nadler and Rose Windows for labels such as Tzadik, Sub Pop, Sacred Bones, Bella Union and Touch.
