With a guitar and a bag of books in tow, she would leave her home in Philadelphia for the postcard scenes of the American landscape to gather data on visitation in National Parks. She counted cars and RVs, surveyed visitors, and made a temporary home for a few weeks at a time wherever she landed. All the while, she collected her own observations like specimens and slowly weaved the songs that would form her debut full-length, ‘Natural Science.’ Recorded throughout 2023 by Lucas Knapp, ‘Natural Science’ paints with a full spectrum. Humor rubs elbows with heartbreak. Acoustic guitars brush up against synthesizers, cradling Reamer as she sings about the American Chestnut tree extinction, employee gossip at a Day's Inn, fishing beside a power plant, turf grass farms, and waking up next to day-old take-out. The indifferent beauty of nature is held up next to the everyday as Reamer does her very best to find clues for navigating the latter by musing upon both. Following the release of her selfproduced EP ‘Lucky (Dear Life Records) in 2021, Reamer assembled a band with musicians from Philadelphia's vibrant music community and began working her once solo-acoustic songs into full band arrangements. After a brief flirtation with dance music which led to 2022's viral single “Touch Tank,” Reamer settled into a sound that lies somewhere in the folk- rock-pop matrix, explored with the humor and lightness of songwriters like Sheryl Crow or Melanie. Reamer reflects: “When | heard the songs with the band, | knew it was time to make the record. It felt like something | had been working towards my whole life. | grew up around musicians but | never thought | was good enough to be in a band or even to make my own music. My grandmother Joan gave me voice lessons after school, my mom was an opera singer, and my dad a guitar player. But it wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized | could do it. It didn't matter if | could shred on the guitar or something. It was like some illusion shattered.” Reamer is a sincere storyteller. The self-doubt and heartbreak expressed in songs like “Spring Song,” “Sugar,” or “Red Flowers” give way to the triumphant moments of self-acceptance and love in “Lucky,” “Necessary,” and “Figs and Peaches.” ‘Natural Science’ chronicles a path to confidence, an honest reflection of someone with the capacity to hold a deep well of emotion who also makes sure to not take it all too seriously. “Gardens on the land / Castles on the beaches / | trust my hand and / Pluck my figs and peaches,” Reamer sings, as she works to reconcile the strange difficulty we have at finding happiness despite the obvious beauty all around us

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Lindsay_Reamer_-_Natural_Science_603757fc_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727431385
the-holey-bible-2
The Holey Bible

For Francie Medosch, leader of rag tag Philly country-rock outft Florry, the 11 songs on their Dear Life Records debut The Holey Bible urgently radiate a place of hard-won optimism, and pull no punches in laying out the patient road it sometimes takes to get there.

The Holey Bible aspires to the special feeling of raucous intimacy achieved by the best records in the outlaw country canon, and strikes that rare balance between a display of careful honesty, and an invitation to a party.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/0656382678940_87451e63_thumbnail_4096.webp?v=1727836241
strange-power-2
Strange Power!

RIYL: Weyes Blood, Allegra Krieger, Jessica Pratt, Kath Bloom. Exacting instrumentation honed through mentorships and late-night jams at fiddler’s conventions tangles with a community-sourced inventiveness that influences variants and new sounds. Joseph Decosimo is a master of this genre for this very reason, blending deep technique with an openness and curiosity that keep his music crackling with life. A “marvelous fiddler” (No Depression) and banjo player who braids “exultation and veneration” (INDY Week) into his music, on his third solo album Fiery Gizzard Decosimo gathers a close-knit ensemble of friends from his musical career to infuse his interpretations of fiddle and banjo pieces with a contagious communal joy.

As an artist working with traditional music from the South and Appalachia, Decosimo chooses songs based not only on historical significance and lineage but also his own sensory approach. For Fiery Gizzard, his ear was tuned to otherworldly tones and mystery, sourcing from field recordings such as Virginia fiddler Luther Davis’ hypnotic version of "Shady Grove" while amping up the music’s psychedelic potential. On the middle Tennessee banjo composition “Flowery Girls,” a VHS of bluesman Abner Jay inspired Decosimo to rig up a pickup inside a fretless banjo and play it through a tube amp to capture some of Jay’s edge and funkiness. But to round out the sound and keep it kinetic meant galvanizing a genre-eschewing crew to jam out– and not in a “spaced-out drooly” kind of way, he laughs, but as a sort of “responsive conversation.”

Decosimo has always been a community-minded artist. He began playing as a seventh grader in Tennessee, fostering relationships with older players at jams and in homes, a learning mode natural to his inquisitive nature and desire for musical connection. A folklorist by intuition, he later became one by profession, studying with old-time legend Clyde Davenport, teaching in East Tennessee State University’s renowned bluegrass program, and receiving his PhD at the University of North Carolina with a dissertation titled “Catching the ‘Wild Note’: Listening, Learning, and Connoisseurship in Old-Time Music.” In North Carolina, Decosimo kicked about in the verdant environment of Durham and Chapel Hill’s folk and indie scenes, collaborating with artists including Alice Gerrard, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Jake Xerxes Fussell. This community has influenced his own music, including his “sublime and strangely heartening” (Bandcamp Daily) 2022 release While You Were Slumbering and Beehive Cathedral, Decosimo’s 2024 “Appalachian mountain music treasury” (New Commute) trio album with Luke Richardson and Cleek Schrey for Dear Life Records.

Continuing on this path, Fiery Gizzard is home base for a loose outfit of mostly Tarheel-based musicians from within and beyond traditional music. Inspired by a tour with fiddler Stephanie Coleman (Nora Brown), guitarist Jay Hammond, and synth builder and multi-instrumentalist Matthew O’Connell, Decosimo assembled studiomates based on close friendships and comfort. Coleman, O’Connell, and Hammond contribute to Fiery Gizzard, along with bassist and producer Andy Stack (Helado Negro, Wye Oak), horn player Kelly Pratt (Beirut, David Byrne), Mipso and Fust’s Libby Rodenbough, Joseph O’Connell (Elephant Micah), and trad/experimental artist Cleek Schrey. Decosimo’s fiddle and banjo work is virtuosic, intricate and simple simultaneously, a testament to his many years of study. On some tracks, his playing or lovely, plain-hearted singing is the centerpiece, such as on his interpretations of Texan street preacher Washington Phillips' 1929 recording "I Had a Good Father and Mother" or the Eastern Kentucky fiddle barn-burner “Glory in the Meetinghouse,” famously played by Luther Strong for Alan Lomax. But there’s also a trusting open-door policy, like where Southern Appalachian tune “Ida Red” relaxes into Coleman’s sweet, confident fiddling and Hammond’s loping guitar.

As a bandleader, Decosimo’s confidence and enthusiasm for the music reveal the heart of traditional music and how it can come to life through community. Fiery Gizzard is Joseph Decosimo as a powerful champion of traditional music – a sponge who soaks up as much as he squeezes out, a responsive artist who makes his genre accessible, and a magnet who can bring musicians of all sorts into his orbit with his same passion.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/2000x2000bb_6e86632e-02ef-407e-ac0a-f96c0c5d08f5.jpg?v=1751140930
birds-of-paradise-1
Birds of Paradise

The realest-deal storyteller in indie-rock today is the Tampa-born, New Orleans-based singer/songwriter Thomas Dollbaum, and Birds of Paradise is his most powerful and dynamic work yet. It follows last year's Big Ugly and 2023's Genevieve, which introduced new listeners to Fust’s blend of “small-town poetry” (Mojo) and a familiar yet probing “country-tinged folk-rock” (KEXP) that made it “one of the most fun rock records of the year” (Pitchfork). With Big Ugly, that sensibility didn’t pivot so much as open up: the band plays louder and looser, while the songs feel even more close-up and lived-in, as Aaron Dowdy’s writing sharpens its eye for the detail that suddenly explains a whole life—and the band moves like a circle of friends telling the same story from several angles at once. The record’s reach earned prominent year-end recognition from outlets like Time and Rolling Stone, with critic Steven Hyden calling it “the purest manifestation of the updated alt-country sensibility.” The Evil Joy reissue also continues a quiet through-line in Fust's catalog: a habit of returning to earlier material not as artifact, but as groundwork—recontextualizing the beginnings as the sound keeps moving. That instinct was already visible in 2024's Songs of the Rail, a set of early home recordings that Paste called “one of the best alt-country compilations...in a long, long time”—a reminder that Fust’s forward motion has always been built from an accumulating, shared history. Evil Joy was recorded sporadically between 2019 and 2021 in New York, eastern Pennsylvania, and Lake Gaston, but it was largely assembled in a shed in north Durham during the winter of 2020–21.

The songs on Evil Joy probe the slow, strange weather of a relationship nearing its end, when time speeds up and thickens at once. Days blur, then suddenly reappear as hard markers: the last days, the day you left, the day you came back, the better days, the days to come. What the record traces isn't a neat narrative arc so much as a lived-through duration: surrender and withdrawal, tenderness that keeps flickering, mistakes you can't rewind, and the uneasy relief that arrives alongside grief. As Rosy Overdrive put it, the album is “gentle, deliberate, and clear Americana/folk rock,” a breezy surface that nonetheless makes room for something darker beneath it. And that’s the hinge of the title, Evil Joy: two words that don't resolve into a slogan so much as name a contradiction you can't talk your way out of—the strange experience of feeling something like lightness at the moment something shared is dying. If the phrase sounds a little overheated, that’s part of its honesty too: the way a hard period gets narrated in real time, when ordinary difficulty can feel momentous, and the name you give it is both an overreaction and a record of how heavy it actually was.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/collections/test_19363cad_thumbnail_4096_942148cc-ed78-4de8-8376-552fb368f7b8.jpg?v=1726429364
