For every pockmarked tenderfoot flying the flag for some fuzzed-out alterna-rocker’s harmony-drenched new single, there’s a grizzled veteran insisting that there’s not enough jangle, not enough hook, not enough oomph on display (‘I hear the pop, but where’s the power?’). Basically, if you thought ‘what is punk’ was a granular debate, trust me: you ain’t seen nothing yet. Anyway, sidestepping the fact that I clearly am one of their kind, let’s just say a quick ‘fuck those nerds’. This is where Class come in. Class are a four-piece from Tucson, AZ, who are most assuredly all the power, all the pop, all the time. They’ve served time in a bunch of bands you already know and love - most notably everyone’s favourite ‘delinquent slobs’ Rik And The Pigs - and Matt Rendon of their citymates The Resonars is the guy behind the mixing desk, so you know whatever comes out is gonna be good. ‘2-4-1’ compiles the two cassettes they’ve released on Cincinnati's Feel It Records (which also released their debut LP proper, ‘Epoca De Las Vaqueros’) and it’s absolutely rammed with new pop classics. ‘Steady Hands’, ‘Wrong Side Of Town’, ‘Inspect The Receipt’, ‘Left In The Sink’... get learning these titles now, ‘cause you’re gonna get very well acquainted when you spin ‘em until your needle’s worn down to a flattened-out nub. Sound-wise, it’s pop music as envisioned by the punks - straight to the point, no fucking about.

Some of these songs feel like Alex Chilton playing ‘September Gurls’ on a curious cocktail of cheap speed and wayyy too much sugar; others are kinda like the aforementioned Resonars if they ditched their British Invasion records and got obsessed with a heady mixture of The #1s and Richard Lloyd’s ‘Alchemy’. Sometimes it just sounds like a forgotten late 70s punk classic, so I think we’re all in the right place here. It’s scuzzy and scuffed up in all the right places, with blazing guitar solos and crashing drum fills designed to get you where you need to go, with a minimum of fuss. ‘Class’ is an apt name. As you’d expect from a band with three vocalists, there’s more than one style at play here, meaning this record pulls from enough varying strands to keep things interesting without sounding unfocused. There’s no time to get bored, unlike when reading my drivel. What the fuck are you waiting for? This is power pop at its best, punk at its funnest, a whale of a time in less than 30 minutes. Let the nerds wage war on each other - clearly, I’ll be reading it - and claim your own victory by playing this one to death. Turns out they’ve all been surrendered to ideological grifting and cynical culture wars, which should be enough to make you pretty fkn furious. And you know what? We’re gonna need a soundtrack to this that sounds equally pissed off; something loud, fast and ‘orrible that gives you the impetus to finally drive that bulldozer through the cop shop. In case you hadn’t guessed where this was going, please welcome the grand, timely and thoroughly welcome return of Chain Whip. Straight out of the gate, their second full-length ‘Call Of The Knife’ is absolutely raging. The opening title track might have you squinting at the turntable for a couple of seconds to check that someone hasn’t reanimated the young Circle Jerks, but as soon as frontman Josh Nickel’s voice kicks in, hardcore cognoscenti will be under no illusions that they could possibly be listening to anyone else. His voice is a righteous, gravelly roar that cuts straight through the noise with the very loose subtext ‘I’m having a bad day and it’s imperative that you know about it’. There’s a vitality to it that helps make these Vancouver boys one of the best bands in punk today, and it helps that he’s backed up by a rattling, rolling collective who remind us all that good old-fashioned hardcore (like the ‘80s used to make) remains one of the best ideas anyone’s ever had. Suck on that idea for a moment, poindexter! You know what you’re getting with song titles like ‘Class Decay’ and ‘Hatewave’, but there’s something about the band’s garageslanted take on the genre that makes ‘em a cut above. Panache? Chutzpah? Just the simple matter of really fkn good songs? Impossible to say, so let’s just settle by agreeing that this album does it all: you can skate to it, you can slam to it, you can paint your bedroom black to it. You can even listen to it while kicking over the statues and kickstarting that violent and bloody revolution we’ve been promised. Look, this is serious stuff that also happens to be oodles of fun. ‘Something’s gotta give,’ they sing, and maybe it’s your resistance. And fair enough I might not really hate all music, but let’s be honest: have you ever actually heard any music? I mean, jeeez. If I’m gonna listen to a record, I’ll need something that matches this misanthropy; something that really gets the neurotransmitters firing on all cylinders and ready to obliterate the feelgood factor. Something like Cleveland band Cruelster, basically. Cruelster are made up of members of Knowso, Perverts Again, and a plethora of other Ohio noiseniks. If it seems like you’ve seen that name before, it’s highly probable - they released a demo back in 2012 and have been sporadically dropping bundles of rough-edged sonic snot ever since, thanks to labels like Lumpy (whose own Dumpers are at the very least sonically adjacent) and Turbine Piss. This singles collection compiles all the non-album tracks they’ve released since that early demo to make a thrillingly ‘orrible racket. Twelve years’ worth of punk rottenness and general stupidity contained in 29 tracks and 40 noisy minutes. It is, of course, fucking brilliant. From the gleefully melodic dumbness (and Booji Boy-flavoured additions) of ‘My Embarrassment’ to the malevolent rumble of ‘Double Trouble’, not to mention a fabulously energised cover of Icona Pop’s dance-pop smash ‘I Love It’, every track here is a winner. It’s the perfect tonic for your rage and the perfect foil to a cruel world where everyone else’s disdain seems more pronounced than your own. Their usual array of nods are all present and correct (The Mob, Zounds, The Cure), but this time everything feels… grander? More fully realised? Impressive, given their first two albums have been hoovered up and hailed by those in the know, but maybe we should banish any lingering doubts that the mysterious Italian band might be moving beyond merely echoing the classics and closer to creating a new benchmark for the genre. Look, all of this is a very fancy way of saying that ACOK are pretty fucking great and no one else can touch ‘em right now when it comes to this sort of goth-tinged post-punk. New instrumentation, new ways of relating to each other as a band, new ways of grabbing your attention as a listener and making you want to press the record grooves into your brain and use your nerve endings as a stylus. From new wave-styled Burundi beats and furious call-and-response vocals to dubbed-out grooves, there are new influences that are more than welcome in the band’s sound, but the songs themselves are their finest thus far (‘2 Years’ and ‘The Last Train Home’ are simply magical). It says a lot about this LP that it’ll hold its own with the output of both Crass Records and 4AD; it’s a strong step forward that’ll win ‘em new fans and embolden existing ones to say things like ‘best band in the world right now’ and ‘sell your home to buy a copy if you have to’. Maybe all or none of these things are true and you’re just in search of three or four chords and some righteous snot. Reader, you have come to the right place. Split System came sauntering out of Melbourne back in 2022 with a self-titled 7” and a debut LP (the sensibly-titled ‘Vol. I’), and as a listener of exquisite taste, one or both of those items will have carved out their own spaces within easy access of your record player. With members of acer-than-ace garage punkas Stiff Richards and Speed Week among their number, not to mention the redoubtable Jackson Reid Briggs, they deal in a gloriously back-to-basics take on punk that’s part Undertones, part Royal Headache and part Chris Bailey - all hooks and glory, all the time. They’re so much more than the sum of their parts and they make this shit sound effortless. Well, here’s an update for you: they’re back! Second album (the equally-sensibly-titled ‘Vol. II’) is now upon us, and a thoroughly tremendous follow-up it is too. As soon as opener ‘The Wheel’ slams into your speakers, it’s clear that they’ve lost none of the pep or power that made their debut such an essential listen; if anything they’re even more raucous and revved-up than before. Yep, that’s jargon for ‘they rule hard’, and let me add here that you could listen to this album 100 times in a row or simply try inserting dynamite sticks with lit fuses into your ear canal; either way, your poor little mind is gonna blow. It’s an album made entirely of bangers (still on that explosion metaphor, are we?) - the concise questioning of ‘End of the Night’ is as pure a punk rock nugget as you could ever wish to uncover, and ‘The Drain’ is just energy distilled to a perfect series of hooks - with a passion for rock’n’roll in its most scintillating form. This thoroughly-welcome Euro pressing follows the album’s DIY release earlier in 2024, which is excellent news for UK/mainland fans of early 80s SoCal hardcore who’ve yet to hear it - the whole thing absolutely fkn rips. Feel free to rifle through your Adolescents, Weirdos and (natch) Agent Orange records to see what these guys have been mining, but all you’ll find is a launchpad - Bloodstains inevitably hail from California and they’re clearly au fait with all the above (not to mention a certain compilation), but they manage to inhabit that sound with a personality all of their own. Vocalist Cesar Marin splits his delivery between a sneering bark (like the most withering put-downs you’ve ever heard being delivered via nailgun) and a purposeful, melodic croon… which itself sounds it’s made from sandpaper and vitriol, but there you go. Most importantly, this is a band with SONGS. Eight of ‘em here, to be precise, and you’ll rarely have been so glad to have something turned up so loud it blows holes in your speakers. ‘Stray Bullets’ hangs its mighty chorus on a call-and-response refrain that dares you not to pick a side and bellow along, while instrumental opener ‘The Last Rites’ sets you up perfectly for the seething, volatile bundle of hooks to follow. I’d say the interplay between the band’s string-wielding Espinoza contingent is something to behold as well, but what am I, some kinda nerd? The guitars sound fkn awesome - that’ll do ya. The roots of American hard rock, since conveyed with catchy, heady melodies, are a precious source for new generations to understand rock. Released on the Infinity label, founded by former Epic vice-president Ron Alexenberg, Dixon House Band's only album attracted a great deal of attention, given that Infinity's speciality was to release albums of American progressive hard rock, far removed from the disco or AOR in vogue at the time. The label had made a name for itself producing Screams and New England. Surfing on the emergence of bands such as Journey, Kansas, Styx, Toto, Foreigner and Boston, the signing of the House Dixon Band made perfect sense. House Dixon Band is first and foremost the band of Edward Dixon House, singer and keyboardist who formed Song Bird before joining Heart with Howard Leese. It's a family affair, since Song Bird's producer, Michael Fricker, was also Heart's producer! So, in 1978, Dixon House was joined by Chuck Gardner (guitars), Canadian BigHorn alumni James Kenfield (bass) and Fred Zeufeldt (drums, percussion) and the only female guitarist, the technically gifted Chrissy Shefts. Recording began at the beginning of the year and took a year to complete. Dixon House composes all the songs and handles the vocals, assisted by Chrissy most of the time. The key to this album is Dixon House's keyboard, and while it has a catchy edge, a dramatic sensibility emerges that makes this record a pinnacle of American progressive hard rock. Sooner or Later, which opens with Fighting Alone, sets the scene. We sail on the ocean of Styx's layers, from vocal harmonies to cutting guitars. Crusader is theatrical, with a song divided into three parts, and is one of the highlights of the album. Angela moves closer to Toto. Howard Leese lends a hand on Who's Gonna Love You Tonight. You can tell that Mike Flicker's production has studied the work of the great names of the American scene. In addition to his productions for Heart, this producer has worked with TKO (Let it Roll), Poco, Randy Meismer and Al Stewart. How could a work of this magnitude not be as successful as Kansas or Styx? Probably because of Infinity's closure after only two years of existence, and a distinct lack of promotion. After the Dixon House Band split up, Dixon House continued a very brief solo career with the release of Masked Madness in 1981, where he was joined by Howard Leese. Chrissy Shefts wrote for Sheena Easton (Best Kept Man), appeared on Heart's Bebe Le Strange album and joined the House Of Schock band.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/Fighting_Alone_556b8c45_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727004903
psychic-injury
Psychic Injury

It’s been said before - in my house, at least - but all the best punk music right now hails from the land Down Under. They’re among the finest exponents of this stuff and it’s a joy to hear it. With titles like ‘Landlord Nation’ and ‘An Ode To Shoplifting’, it doesn’t take a genius to identify their targets; with lyrics like ‘I’m the first of many suckers’ you can tell they’re not above self-deprecation, even as they rage gloriously about a system that’s rigged against us. The album drips - like an icicle in the Sahara - with righteous rage, and even when that anger feels knowingly futile (“I hate the public / Get away from me”), it’s delivered with such wide-eyed venom that it still feels potent as fuck. Overpublicised rock hack/full-time gobshite Charles Shaar Murray said of The Clash that they were ‘the sort of garage band who should be speedily returned to the garage, preferably with the motor running’. Now that’s all well and good, but what if I told you there was a band that sounded like they’d taken this to heart and replaced the petrol fumes with all the gnarliest uppers and the cheapest booze? Meet Texas’ Insane Urge, a band for whom no fidelity is too low, no riff is too snotty, and there’s no hook that wouldn’t sound better being crushed into the dirt by a combination of velocity and curled-lip, devilish delirium. This is their ‘Two Tapes LP’, compiling their (you guessed it) two tapes for Down South Tapes - and what a compilation it is! Rattling through 15 songs in 18 minutes, it condenses the primal chords of The Sonics, the dumb thrills of the Oblivians and the smash’n’grab speed of hardcore punk to create something that sticks to your synapses like paste. Almost feels like someone should call Bomp!, Sympathy For The Record Industry and Crypt to check this hasn’t leaked out of their archives - that classic raw vibe is unmistakeably here and it’s an instant winner. From the opening instrumental that shares its name with the band to the minute-long thrill ride of ‘Job’, ‘Two Tapes LP’ is rock’n’roll at its stoopid best (and trust me, you’ve gotta be smart to play this stoopid). It’s a record that’ll cement its place on your speakers, its brevity only serving to make you demand another immediate fix - which you’ll do again and again and again. Well, now they’re back with a debut album that seems to have skipped right ahead from Is This Real? to Over The Edge: this self-titled LP has all the gut-punching ramalama, knockabout guts’n’glory of that first tape, with added layers. Melodic guitar lines come perilously close to jangling over crunching power chords, while furiously yelped choruses give way to sumptuously put-together breakdown sections that catch you off guard and kick you in the shins before legging it down the street. Chained Bliss clearly love scrappy, skatey garage rock (echoes of Agent Orange’s Living In Darkness abound) as much as they love pushing that raucous clatter into something spacious - the meditative sections that flow effortlessly into absolute ripper Pillars Of Abuse are as unexpected as the thoughtful but head-spinningly energetic sections that bring Creative Seizure so thrillingly to life. Other times they’re just as happy to keep you careening towards the pit with two-minute bangers, but that’s the beauty of this record: it’s never smarter than when it’s playing dumb, and the rest of the time it’s just pretty damn smart. Here’s a challenge: can you listen to Ominous Life’s gnarly pop without raising those fists of yours skywards and landing a firm thump on the air? Or Drifter’s swaggering stomp? Or, or, or… ahhh hell, you get what I’m saying here. Every single cut slays, every single hook snags itself on your brain. You’ll come back for more, and more, and more. Hell, even the guitar solos crammed into the bridges of tracks like “Hoy” speak to this hybridized heritage, connoting d-beat, crossover thrash, and first wave goth rock. Without ever letting the pace drop, 1186 find ways of carrying the mood and gothic atmospherics of deathrock through each of these territories. Like the earliest records by Belgrado and Spectres, Histeria does a fantastic job of zeroing in on what makes deathrock different from either original punk or pure goth, and makes that sense of swaggering doom its focus. A band that’s been uttered in reverence for nearly two decades with only a handful of releases, each one a stand-alone classic. You see, it’s hard to pinpoint a band that actually has the equal influences of American psychedelia and hard rock all anchored in the glorious benevolence of American Hardcore. A tonne of bands dance around and flirt with each but it rarely lands in the sweet spot. They’re not trying to fit some supposed perfect space and that’s the very point so many others miss. Wiccans are creating the space. Breaking rules and allowing a bit of breadth to what is often a claustrophobic style of music. This might sound scary as everyone knows that the more Hardcore evolves the worse it is - at least on record. The formula that Wiccans are playing with on Phase IV should scare you. It’s totally potent with odd songwriting, intensely creative and varied guitar work and completely pissed vocals. Phase IV does whatever the fuck it wants and passes the bar that only Wiccans could have set for themselves. All of this is propelled by a far stronger production quality than previous efforts and instead of having that expose some fault line it’s secured it as a modern classic.
