Harkening back to her 2011 release \u003ci\u003eGolder\u003c\/i\u003e, which featured two instrumental tracks, McCallum has taken the instrumental concept a few steps further in a bold musical statement which features no vocals. This time, McCallum’s musicianship and artistry take the lead. Transitioning from the erratic, synth-driven intro of \u003ci\u003eCredit Forever Part 1\u003c\/i\u003e into the deeply enchanting \u003ci\u003eGive Yourself Away\u003c\/i\u003e, which blends piano melodies in the style of French Romanticism with the production stylings of Brian Eno to build a sonic landscape which is as lovely as it is uneasy. In the stoner-metal burner \u003ci\u003eSyrup\u003c\/i\u003e, McCallum’s lead guitar swaggers lazily over a fuzzed out, intense layer of distortion, featuring long-time collaborator and guitar wunderkind Jeremy Ylvisaker and Low's Steve Garrington on bass. The intimate and devastating \u003ci\u003ePig Latin\u003c\/i\u003e showcases McCallum’s extraordinary gift for melody, carried by world class saxophonist Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Bon Iver), tracked live in Haley's bedroom. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMixed by Shuta Shinoda (Anna Meredith, Ghostpoet), McCallum’s production shines through in a new light. Sparsely interlacing the organic and digital, \u003ci\u003ePleasureland\u003c\/i\u003e moves through the gamut of grief, perception, and empowerment, eliciting both the uneasiness of a world shifting unexpectedly as well as the innate capacity for goodness and beauty. Bratt was intended to be sung from a teenage perspective, appropriating that unsentimental attitude while simultaneously looking back at yourself at that age, all of the insecurities that went along with it, letting go of your self-judgement on the past. My Wave was intentional in its use of repetition and very few lyrics. I like the idea of words carrying the same sonic weight as another instrument, more or less a textural addition rather than a centrepiece or emotionally derivative. That being said, the lyrics themselves seem to morph in their meaning with the repetition; maybe referring to the loss of yourself at times, or the loss of another, our connection to the natural world, or an emotional disconnect.
