Germany was home to many Thrash bands throughout the past 30 years. We have seen acts such as Exumer, Darkness, Mekong Delta, Deathrow, and Paradox leave an everlasting impression. However, one group was sadly ignored from the pack. This group was Speed/Thrash band Grinder. Grinder released “Dead End” on No Remorse Records (the label that brough us Blind Guardian) in 1989. By the year 1989 Thrash had exploded. Most of the territory was explored and new albums were simply an improvement of older bands; originality was scarce. Not that it mattered, because nobody at that point listened to new Thrash bands to hear something original. Right? Wrong. At least according to Grinder, who not only managed to create awesome headbangable metal, but also came up with an original sound. There are several things we really like about this release, one certainly being the production. It’s pretty top notch for a late 80’s release and has the intensity and raw sound that Thrash needs, while not sounding overly clean like a lot of early 90’s releases did. The variety here is what really makes this album. There aren’t any songs here that sound typical, instead we get some unexpecting twists and turns, great buildups, interesting slow sections, catchy choruses, original solo’s, and so on. Truly this one would be easy to call real Speed/Thrash. It has a lot of melodic moments and several early Blind Guardian comparisons, but for the most part it’s still totally in your face and catchy as hell. Grinder would go on to get Thrashier with their next releases and would leave the speed elements behind, though it’s hard to say if they were better writing material like this than their later stuff. Therefore, if you like intelligently executed Thrash, you should check out this courageous album. A towering, crushing magnificence is wrapped in coils of poignant intimacy and the fact that the band choose to sing in their native tongue only adds to the grim beauty of these powerful songs. And now Swedish Post Metal/Sludge quintet is back with a crushing new album infused with incredible dynamics; deft, poetic contrasts between passages of soft beauty and granite heaviness. From the moment that it begins, it is abundantly clear that ORO have created something very special with their second album, Vid Vägs Ände. It is one of those albums that defines the soul of its creators, displaying the absolute essence of all that makes ORO such a potent, unique entity. From the stately power of unstoppable opening track ‘Arvet & Tystnaden’ onwards the sustained quality is simply remarkable, with one breathtaking, towering peak leading to another and another. There is such a lyrical musicality about these songs that each individual shift from one chord to the next feels perfect in its tone and timing. The echoing notes that introduce ‘Bältad’ seem to attune themselves to the beat of your heart, the pulse of your blood, drawing you gently but inexorably into its embrace. And then cracks open up beneath your feet and you are tumbling down into vast chasms of sound, leaving you lost in the darkness...only for a gloriously melodic refrain to arrive and lift you up once more on its muscular shoulders. Each song on “Vid Vägs Ände” has this scope, each one an enveloping world, an utterly consuming experience that makes the album as a whole exhausting and exhilarating in equal measure. The waves of riffs and drums that crash over you, the searing sadness that hangs like mist in the air - all these elements have been given vibrant life by the stunning production and mix by Jakob Linnér and the mastering skills of Tony Lindgren (Enslaved, Insomnium, Katatonia), the sound so warm, rich and textured you want to grasp it in your hands. Ostensibly an admixture of black, death and thrash metal, they’ve also got no opposition to tossing in symphonic sequences, narrative samples, or more accessible riffs and melodies than you might expect given their track record. The bottom line is that they have crafted this comprehensive album in which anything can go as long as it services the songwriting, and you will enjoye the experience for all that it draws upon, and the fact that it defies any sort of easy predictability while not swinging too far outside the box.

Monumental expressions inspired by the ocean’s roar! The core of Asphodelus’s sound is primarily Death/Doom Metal with a small hint of ancient Greek Black Metal piping in on a few moments. There is a jagged early 90’s feeling to the work and none of it is performed with any gloss or need for perfect takes, this absolutely helps crack the ‘code’ of what made the earliest work from their 90’s inspirations feel special and earnest.

If you are a fan of this type of music no doubt you are already swimming to this new utopian island to brood and droop under its majesty, it is a niche so rarely fed with a tasteful entry. “Sculpting from Time” is an album lovingly crafted and passionately executed. Asphodelus is the brainchild of three Finnish gentlemen, of whom Jari Filppu bore the largest burden in the recording process, taking on vocals, bass, and some guitar duties. “Sculpting from Time” is attended with a sense of unfathomable, philosophical sorrow; spaciously melodic guitars. The lushness of the opener “Waterside” is exquisite and constitutes a very fine opening to a Death/Doom Metal album. The other songs are crafted in the same way, attention to detail overpowering notions of their influences, as the early ‘90s sound is brought to life in all its crawling, complex glory. Asphodelus achieves a high level of diversity and ingenuity without either straying from their chosen paradigm or indulging in lengthy songs. Only the closing “Where Freezing Spirits Fall” ventures over seven minutes, while half of the songs are done in five, managing to pack in the riffs and aching melodies of much longer compositions within that time. What will truly bring listeners back time and again to “Sculpting from Time” is the sprawling atmosphere of the album, created and maintained by each element fitting together into a seamless display. Welcome to a journey into space itself in which its divinity is formed by progressive components and blackened chaos: Sear Bliss’s “Heavenly Down”. Externally mighty and internally filling, Hungary’s metallic frontrunners once again apply their signature formula of conjoining elegance and evil; two separate worlds that flawlessly connect into one special entity of supreme distinction. A galactic quest in which Sear Bliss rewrites the rules of experimental metal is found within “Heavenly Down” and the trip is very exciting, believe us. Though containing common Black Metal qualities, “Heavenly Down” shows a neat shape of Sear Bliss’s own originality mixed in with several usual endowments. As expected, Sear Bliss preserves their blackened roots intact with epic tremolo picking sections, firing blastbeats, and András Nagy’s graceful shrieks, yet the use of beautiful clean guitars and majestic keyboards add to the already-mighty picture. But don’t fear for too much soft stuff, because there are some massive head-banging riffs that just shred your eyeballs out of their sockets. The harmony between two separate musical extremes is reached in precise unison, and such a joyous tension is never broken from its state of wonder; this is how Black Metal and empyrean moods are supposed to wed. During the voyage, Sear Bliss keeps the ride interesting with the band’s hidden weapon that seems a bit odd at first, but ends out working excellently: the trombone. Zoltán Pál‘s strange position in Sear Bliss is not that of a clueless musician hitting symphonic notes, but rather an individual that can intelligently wrap the trombone around the harsh guitars and ethereal surroundings superbly. The thing is, however, that the trombone takes absolute control of Sear Bliss’s music whenever the master permits its freedom: you’ll be enjoying a cool riffing section, and then a blast of brass just explodes like no other instrument. It’s truly a unique experience that needs to be heard to be believed. Overall, we dare to say “Heavenly Down” is a fantastic album with countless incidents of atypical independence and atmospheric delight. Everything is solid as a rock, and the consistent display of cosmic instrumentation definitely make this record a highlight in Sear Bliss’ discography. After a shortlived reunion in 1997, they would come back into the fold in 2015 with a new re-designed version of their lineup. Now they return with their new full-length album “Mourninghoul”. “Mourninghoul” is Sarcasm’s fifth album, it was recorded during six months of the last year. Mixed and mastered by Lawrence Mackrory at Rorysound. With the new drummer Jesper Ojala the band has recorded their most dynamic and innovative album to date, while the band keeps evolving and raises the bar a notch on each album, the old catchiness and atmosphere is still recognizable. The essence of the band is Death Metal but listening to the album closely and open-mindedly, many dimensions unfold, and indeed the album feels like a journey and explores many elements and emotions of extreme metal. And that was the intention because like the last album, “Mourninghoul” is also concept-based. It’s about a two-minded ghoul and it’s journey through its miserable existence on Earth and the deepest abyss, the lyrical structure is like a conversation the ghoul is having with its higher inner being with answers coming through on its journey as its universe expands, with lots of symbolism and metaphors thrown in till its final realization. Sarcasm does not write lyrics like others, while the musical side of the band is very strong, their unique lyrical style alone makes the band stand out from the rest. For fans of well-played, original Thrash Metal 1988’s “Neurodeliri” is a must. 1988 seemed the right time for the world to finally see Bulldozer like they deserved to be, no more a Venom tribute band, but rather a truly peculiar band with its very own brand of music. In the light of these reflections, “IX” marked definitely a 180-degrees turn from the past, more than it did music-wise. It was finally the moment for the Milanese crew to ride their wave of popularity, maybe the band members expected it to be the best year for the band’s career so far. But then, in April, co-founder and former bassist Dario Carria committed suicide and complicated everything. AC Wild and mainly Andy Panigada were bewildered by the news, as fans were, and profoundly struck. Still, they managed to channel all the emotions of that tragedy in the songwriting for the follow-up to their breakthrough album “IX”, which incidentally would be their last full-length after their dissolution on good terms in 1990. As a result, “Neurodeliri” possesses a drearier atmosphere which pops up every now and then. Carria also replaces AC Wild on the captivating album cover, which gives the right idea of coldness and desperation, especially if coupled with the title, referring the name of the band he created, but also being a synonym for a certain department of mental hospitals in Italian language. Regarding the music, the addition of keyboards, be it for atmospheric purposes like “Overture”’s somber, beautiful melody or the support at the riffs of the subsequent title-track, or again as a nice something extra like the amazing, power-infused duel with the guitar in the second half of “Art of Deception”, is mostly responsible for it. “Neurodeliri” was Bulldozers last studio-album until they reformed in 2008, and given the undoubted high quality of it and of all their previous albums, one might ask himself why they never really achieved more than just a certain cult status. The reason is probably that Bulldozer were never keen on success and popularity, as they never compromised about their sound when most other Thrash Metal bands wimped out or changed their style at the end of the 80s when Thrash Metal became less popular. A transitional phase between the band’s Death Metal roots and the hybrid of symphonic, gothic metal which they would carry forward for the rest of their career. This is an extremely dark album. The band retains their fascination with obscure occult magick and prophecies within the lyrics, and the music revolves around killer mid-paced Metal riffs drenched in the vocal libations of Christofer Johnsson. Other excellent tracks include the charging “Riders of Theli”, the crushing doom of “Black” which would have fit almost perfectly on “Into the Pandemonium”. The rest of the album is equally dark and enchanting, with other standouts being the title track and “Evocation of Vovin”. Synthesizers, flutes multiple vocalists, and the core of the band are all clear and precise throughout, yet it still carries a very raw and dark, ominous tone to it which trumps the later studio efforts. The music sounds fairly dissimilar to the completely doom-laden, crushing riffs present on the earlier material, but what Trouble do here sounds every bit authentic. Not to mislead you, this definitely still sounds like Trouble, but they seem to have adopted a more laidback, stoner metal approach; sacrificing sinister atmospheres for more upbeat ones. The first few tracks are completely awesome offerings of vintage Trouble.

The playful, thrashy riff of the title track, which opens the album, is a great introduction to the music at hand and Eric Wagner’s distinctive vocals sound powerful overtop. Plastic Green Head, The Eye, Flowers, these are all what you would expect from Trouble, huge churning riffs, 80 bpm drumbeats, Eric Wagners nasal yet powerful voice. Big wall of guitar noise, and Eric singing in a less nasal and more melodic voice. Opium Eater sounds like it could easily be an Alice in Chains song. On this album there is silly plenty of Sabbath worship, but also more of an upbeat, hard rock feel. We would even say that a little grunge has crept into their sound (to be fair, it’s probably the other way around, Trouble influence crept into grunge.) If you’re looking for a nice dose of stoner metal, you’ll find just that right here. Deep sorrowful Doom Metal! New album coming in March 2023. We guess by 2023 Isole hardly needs to do anything in order to be considered the third Doom Metal behemoth on Swedish soil after Candlemass and Count Raven. With only masterful Doom Metal opuses in their discography the guys should have been content with the impact they had on the scene enjoying their status as one of the premier Doom Metal providers in the new millennium. Prone to a more progressive style of songwriting than masters of epic Doom like Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus, Isole heap a lot of content into their songs, which makes “The Calm Hunter” a challenging, yet exciting listen even at only 51 minutes. What this album draws closest to is a more boisterous and less reverent - though equally sorrow-filled - travel through Doom’s heartlands of woe and regret as imagined by Swallow the Sun and October Tide. Guitars chug heartily, death growls meet monkish croons and choirboy cleans, while some sections leap off the track and scramble down a hillside at pace. The important thing here is to recognize that Isole are not following the established rules of this style as they did a little bit more on their previous releases but attempt to introduce some new features and add excitement, though not at the expense of losing the sombre mood. The lightness and ease of movement implied by this ability to change pace keeps the listener guessing throughout The Calm Hunter, plus adds to the weight of the gloomier Doom sections. The energetic guitar tone and variety of riffing styles work really well, giving ballast to the songs and driving the compositions forward, which gain atmosphere from the vocal melody, creating a perfect balance between the key elements of energy and emotion. The way that Isole veer away from the obvious is also a pleasant surprise, since Doom Metal can take its own gravity a little too seriously, meaning that some bands refuse to stray from the typical trudging melancholy. Avoiding this trait may be a result of the band’s tendency to use song dynamics to affect the emotions generated, since some of the pieces here build intensity towards the end, while others wind down in gentler style. The result is for the album to feel varied and full even with only seven songs on offer. Also present on this album are several melodic moments that flurry around the basic song chassis in a manner that sometimes makes one think of melo Death, but often sound menacing or ethereal in a true doom sense, like during ‘Perdition’. These are very effective, either breaking up the occasionally plodding traditional doom fare and lifting the mood or crushing down harder to produce feelings of loss and despair. It’s refreshing to see a band such as Isole step up and take charge of their destiny like this: if they plan to continue in the same distinctive direction, they might well become leaders in a new wave of Doom Metal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/The_Calm_Hunter_f10e8a99_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727472310
born-from-shadows
Born from Shadows

Classic Isole album finally available again on CD! With only masterful Doom Metal opuses in their discography the guys should have been content with the impact they had on the scene enjoying their status as one of the premier Doom Metal providers in the new millennium. There was hardly any need in changing the formula for “Born from Shadows”. The moment the sorrowful riffs of “The Lake” hit, the fans will instantly know that the guys haven’t misled them, and that this opus is high-octane epic Doom all the way. Faster-paced guitars emerge at some point their dynamic leaps assisted by surprising Death Metal growls before more lyrical deviations sink everything in grief and mourning. “Black Hours” combines doom with the ballad in a deeply atmospheric, elegiac aura accentuated by the excellent emotional clean vocals; the pace is almost funereal with an overt melancholic vibe as well the latter poignantly present on the following title-track which suddenly moves towards more aggressive ways of expression those bringing the death metal throat to the fore once again. “Come to Me” recalls the My Dying Bride nostalgic dirges with lamentable guitars and more melodic undercurrents until a portion of more bouncy, more vivid rhythms start moving things around not without the help of the great vocal tirades, the most epic composition here with an imposing sombre finale. “My Angel” is an encompassing 10+ minutes saga which relies on the ballad and more melodic embellishments, but the mood instilled is one-of-a-kind although there’s hardly a mid-tempo stroke during its playing time. Sorrow and grief in copious amounts, but it can’t be any other way with one of Doom Metal’s finest “condemning” everyone to mourning with “Condemned” where the Death Metal growler shows up at the beginning to inaugurate a marvelous more energetic hymn with great ship-sinking riffage and a wider array of rhythmic sections the guitars constantly juggling between slow and more dynamic dashes. “When All is Black” is a delightful depressing funeral “march” with the slowest performance on the album, a fitting ending to this classic Doom masterpiece. For vintage, seismic retro Doom Metal one shouldn’t look any further than this opus. This is a big album, with big songs and a big sound! Isole formed under the name Forlorn back in 1990. Several demo tapes were recorded in the 1990s, including Waves Of Sorrow in 1994 - a recording still revered by epic Doom Metal fans. After a few years of turmoil, I Hate Records approached them in 2003. With a newly signed contract and much motivation, the band saw it fit to adopt a new moniker, thus becoming Isole. Isole’s debut album, “Forevermore”, was released in early 2005. The next album, “Throne Of Void” - released in the summer of 2006 - delivered an even darker sound than its critically acclaimed predecessor. The next step in Isole’s journey was signing with major label Napalm Records and the release of “Bliss Of Solitude”. “Bliss Of Solitude” received overwhelming positive feedback from fans and critics alike; however, Isole did not fall prey to idleness and continuously worked on new material for their fourth album, “Silent Ruins”. It was an ambitious concept album in which the band ventured into new territories by incorporating more variation and increasing the pace of the songs. After releasing four albums in four years, Isole slowed things down. They decided to take a break from the studio and focus on playing live in order to gain some perspective before returning to the song writing process. Isole’s fifth release, “Born From Shadows”, is the continuation of a story that began in 2005. 3 years later Isole left Napalm Records and begun a collaboration with Cyclone Empire which resulted in the slightly more progressive opus “The Calm Hunter”. Things have been a bit quiet around Isole after the tour they did to support “The Calm Hunter” but time has now come for the next chapter in the Isole saga, they have dwelled in the shadows long enough and will spread their wings of melancholy again now allied with Hammerheart Records. The new opus “Dystopia” with stories of this deteriorating world weaved in melancholic melodies will be out in August 2019. Once again recorded at Studio Apocalypse and Gustavo Sazes (Arch Enemy, Firewind) provided his artistic know-how to convey a feeling of mysticism and darkness through his symbolic artwork, while Mika Jussila Bogren Finnvox Studios took on the mastering responsibilities. With their first releases, Isole were able to secure an excellent reputation within the Doom Metal underground. Then with Bliss of Solitude and Silent Ruins they elevated their status even further. Yet Obtained Enslavement did exactly that, as “Soulblight” is a very different release but it maintained the quality and musicianship the band made themselves known for with “Witchcraft”. This release discards the openness and mystique of the orchestral arrangements in place of a more guitar and drum- oriented sound, but this works for the much darker and aggressive tone of “Soulblight”. The structure of the album is a highlight compared to its predecessor as it feels more conceptual and complete as a whole, rather than just a collection of songs. This makes sense as the lyrics tell an epic tale of a great war against the ‘soulblight’, a story that can be followed through the music itself too, thus making it a conceptual album in many ways. Speaking of instrumental work, the iconic and untouchable classically influenced composition (it would be insulting to call it songwriting) of guitarists ‘Heks’ and ‘Døden’, with its weaving and developed melodies to the complex chord sequences and intricate structures, is still an aspect that is so unique to this band; the composers truly have a great understanding of music in its high-art form. The performances delivered by the band are done with terrifying precision and clarity, unusual for the genre where commonly a ‘that will do’ attitude is employed; nowhere on this album can you hear sloppiness of any kind. Pest’s vocals are consistent and hair-raising, nothing about it sounds human and this works in favour of this otherworldly suite. Pytten has once again cemented himself as one of the greats in the Black Metal world and even just knowing this album was recorded in the infamous Grieghallen, adds to its grandeur and appeal. To conclude, “Soulblight” is a worthy contender for one of the best Black Metal albums of the 90’s. Album concept: Black Hole District is a story in a Tech-Noir style, inspired by Blade Runner, but also Dark City, Matrix, Ghost in The Shell, as well as “hard boiled” literature. The narrator lives in a decaying city, in a dystopian future. The moon has left its orbit and is coming dangerously close to Earth, causing increasingly violent cataclysms (earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.). Humans now live at night because it is too hot during daytime. This narrator is disturbed by recurring dreams in which a woman with long black hair speaks to him. However, he doesn’t remember who she is. He decides to investigate to find her. He ends up reaching a forbidden part of the city, called “Black Hole District”. He enters a building which is actually an android factory. He then realizes that the faces of the inert and aligned androids being manufactured, are all the same... And identical to his own. His break-in causes an alarm during which he, through the confusion, sees the woman of his dreams among the employees. He flees and tries to leave the city, pursued by a militia charged with “removing” him; Because androids that have become “sentient” and can think for themselves are considered defective and dangerous. As he reaches the city limits, he gets fatally shot. At the same time, the city begins to disintegrate, due to the Moon’s increasing proximity. It surely is not because we think they were unworthy being mentioned. Maybe it’s just because Obtained Enslavement was never considered a leading force on the Norwegian black metal scene and then it makes us forget about their uniqueness and brilliance. Well, for sure they are a band that every fan of Norwegian Black Metal should know and have the albums in their collection. They’re probably one of the first bands, which can be called symphonic black metal, but their music, despite having a strong keyboard/orchestral background, was simply way more harsh and uncompromising when compared to other symphonic bands. “Soulblight” and “Witchcraft” were killer albums. But there’s also another one, which people often forget to mention, maybe because it is a bit different compared to the two just mentioned and it differs musically. We are talking about “The Shepherd and the Hounds of Hell”! The approach on this album is different, a bit more easy to listen to, filled with melodic, memorable parts, less chaotic, rough and less fast and with a strong professional production. Gone is the real dark and obscure atmosphere of the earlier albums, but don’t be afraid, “The Shepherd and the Hounds of Hell” is still an excellent effort. Obtained Enslavement remind us of bands like Diabolical Masquerade, Enslaved, Dimmu Borgir, Tartaros and Kvist on “The Shepherd and the Hounds of Hell”. Combining their mastery of creating profound Norse black melodies and the always-intense throat-scarring screams of vocalist Pest (Gorgoroth) in seven songs here, this band has created an excellent record.

The 1998 Norwegian Black Metal classic ‘Soulblight’ re-issued! “Soulblight” is a worthy contender for one of the best Black Metal albums of the 90’s! 1997’s “Witchcraft” wass a challenging album to follow up with its cult status as one of the greatest Black Metal releases owing to its complex compositions and intricate orchestration. The world will likely never again see two Black Metal albums as perfect as “Soulblight” and “Witchcraft”, evil in its intent yet majestic and epic in its final form.

Darrkh...
