As Peel explains, “The specialist library label KPM, gave me permission to reinterpret the original music of the celebrated 1972 KPM 1000 series: Electrosonic, the music of Delia Derbyshire and the Radiophonic Workshop.” This process of re-generation and finding fresh inspiration in pioneering, experimental electronics from the early 1970s is at the core of the album. Peel has made connections and new patterns that mirror the Earth’s ecological cycles through music.

Peel explains, “I’m drawn to the patterns around us and the cycles in life that will keep on evolving and transforming forever. Fir Wave is defined by its continuous environmental changes and there are so many connections to those patterns echoed in electronic music - it’s always an organic discovery of old and new.” As Delia Derbyshire revealed in 2000 to BBC sound engineer, journalist and academic Jo Hutton: “I like new things that don’t seem new . . . as though they’ve always been there.” Known more recently for curating and presenting on BBC Radio 3’s Night Tracks, the Northern Irish Emmy-nominated composer and producer’s work is ambitious and forward-looking, adapting and re-inventing new genres and hybrid musical forms.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/f3f2a128-fc1e-49bb-a052-acc63bacb9b8_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727504410
rebox-2-1
Rebox 2.

Hannah Peel releases a new seven track mini-album Rebox 2, featuring four new music box covers and three new instrumental pieces. Peel's first Rebox came out as an EP in 2010, when she covered the likes of Cocteau Twins, New Order and Soft Cell. Initially only available as a Ltd Edition CD and download, the songs on the new release are all from the last couple of years, starting with a version of Perfume Genius' 'Queen' from 2014. John Grant's 'Pale Green Ghosts' is also about self-awareness and acceptance as the singer looks back at his younger self. Peel's version retains the epic grandeur of the original with layers of multi-tracked voices and harp-like music box, while the synths revel in the sense of experimentation that inspired Grant to write the song in the first place. A striking image also opens 'Palace' - 'in detail you are even more beautiful than from afar'. The Wild Beasts' song from 2014. The final cover on the album is 'Heaven, How Long', originally written by East India Youth and arguably the centre-piece of their Total Strife Forever debut album from 2014. It's a soaring, emotional pay-off to Peel's new release, closing with the revealing, eternally longing line - 'In spite of all the love inside me/There is a question I've been asking/Heaven, how long?' It's quite remarkable really, and it's getting worse".

Peel has created an exquisite, distinct album of two halves, full of vibrant, direct colour in the early stages contrasted with esoteric, dreamscape, legato movements towards the end. The bright, raw magic and joy of personal relationships are set alongside the gradual loss of her grandmother to dementia. A childhood spent in the landscape of the Irish coast inspires a sense of openness in the music - places to roam and investigate - but there's also a complex, darker, percussive thrust to these songs, as adult city life intrudes and, in its own way, inspires. The album has the feel of a dream where all of daily life is being expressed and decoded, from feverish rush-hours to the old sunlight of her grandmother's fading memories. Peel switches from panoramic city images in 'Standing On The Roof Of The World' to the dissolving, hallucinogenic moments that define the second half of the album. The album's closer is a cover of Paul Buchanan's (The Blue Nile) 'Cars In The Garden' which returns memory to childhood - "find the place that we forgot." Performed with her trademark music box and by way of a sublimely coaxed out, bittersweet duet with Hayden Thorpe from Wild Beasts, this is another fine shift in tone and perspective - from the grandeur and chaos of 'Foreverest' to something very simple, surreal and yet utterly moving and memorable.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/dd7bd401-15c4-4406-9121-41726c2df420_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1727707888
the-midwich-cuckoos-original-score
The Midwich Cuckoos (Original Score)

Now available on LP after being released digitally last year on Invada Records. The Midwich Cuckoos is based on the 1957 science fiction novel by John Wyndham, and tells the story of an English village where the women become mysteriously pregnant.

Hannah Peel‘s score is described as a unique and intricately produced soundscape, working in harmony with the sound design of Sky’s adaptation.

With analogue synthesisers recreating the horror of the ‘Hive Mind’, tape manipulations, drones, woodwind and melodies echoing the song of the cuckoo bird, Peel creates a score that perfectly balances the organic instrumentations and melodies, juxtaposed with an increasingly dark electronic ‘invasion’.

Peel explains, “Creating the score was a constant endeavour to find the balance between darkness and light, fear and beauty.
