The duo took advantage of their homebound status in 2020 to reflect on themes both pastoral and political in the shaping of the new record. A closer communion to the natural world is reflected in both the field recordings that drift across the record and the cover art of the LP, while the lyrical content of the songs reflect a disillusionment with the political landscape of the last two years.

For Streams, Heron and Crane strive for a more dynamic sound than their debut, mixing live drums with analog synth melodies and sequences. This change adds a new energy to songs like the Rother-inspired, Fogline, and the psych-meets- shoegaze of Projectiles. Fans of the band’s pastoral side will still find plenty to enjoy on tracks like Compassion Circuit and Fatal Shore, which find the duo mining the gentle library music sounds that informed much of the first record.

The album was once again recorded in Charlottesville, VA and Columbus, OH with the group doing much of the writing and arranging remotely.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/a4043640687_10_7481fc3c_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1732858365
nestings
Nestings

Heron and Crane, the electronic psych-folk duo made up of Dave Gibson (Personal Bandana) and Travis Kokas (Cryptids After Dark), release their third record, Nestings, via Hibernator Gigs Records.

Work on Nestings began in late 2021, shortly after the release of the previous record, Streams. The pandemic was in full swing, and the recording was impacted by several significant life events that shaped the music: new houses, marriage, the loss of beloved pets, new jobs, mental health issues. “Life certainly encroached more than usual during the making of this record but the music, as always, provided a safe place, an escape, and, ultimately, a feeling of hope that all would work out,” says Gibson. Kokas adds, “This was the first record that Dave and I recorded completely remotely and therefore the album has more of an experimental quality to it.”

This experimentation finds Heron and Crane exploring new textures, while maintaining a footing in the group’s pastoral psych-folk roots. Opener Ureshiku Mo mixes Byrds-like jangle with KPM style synths. Themes, as its title implies, could be the theme tune to a long forgotten children’s educational program. Songs like Tribal Knowledge and These Heretics aim for a slightly darker psych sound, with ringing sitars transporting listeners to another sonic dimension. As always, the group finds solace in nature via gentler marimba filled tracks, such as On Fossil Beach and Crownbeard.

Nestings was recorded in Charlottesville, VA and Columbus, OH with the group doing all of the writing and arranging remotely, trading tracks back and forth in their usual style.

Heron and Crane, an electronic psych folk duo, release their debut record, Firesides, on Hibernator Gigs Records.

Heron and Crane is the pastoral psych creation of Dave Gibson and Travis Kokas, former members of Columbus, Ohio power pop band, The Cusacks, and current members of Weird Mob and Cryptids After Dark, respectively. Inspired in equal measure by 60s psych pop, 70s acid folk, 80s synth pop and the hauntological sounds of vintage library music, Firesides is the perfect soundtrack to your next imaginary journey through undiscovered realms.

Firesides contains a kaleidoscope of sounds, from the ambient folk of opener, Another Unfortunate Mannequin, to the driving synth-pop of Stars Over Nara, from the krautrock groove of Space Junk to the pastoral folk of Companions of Fish and Turtles. Vintage Moog, Yamaha and Korg synthesizers are combined with acoustic instruments and folk inspired melodies to create an atmosphere of instant nostalgia. The album was recorded in Charlottesville, Virginia and Columbus, Ohio with the two members trading files and ideas back and forth remotely, building layers of electronics onto the original acoustic demos. Gibson and Kokas split the songwriting evenly and each bring their unique sound to the project as both explore the fringes of their musical taste and find new ways to engage the listener.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0867/1120/6219/files/a3159842165_16_fcfb462b_thumbnail_4096.jpg?v=1732875245
