Certainly it is at the nexus of Mod moving into rock, but the combination of West Coast harmonies, spaced out but biting guitars, and a swinging jazzy groove could only have come from those steeped in the mod world. Produced by Scene Club DJ, and Sue Records head honcho Guy Stevens – the man who helped The Who and The Stones find appropriate cover versions from his legendary record collection – its pedigree is clear. And when you consider that Mighty Baby emerged from the ashes of The Action, it seems that the Modernist pedigree is very strong. Both tracks were taken from the group’s self-titled debut album originally released on John Curd’s Head label, and House Without Windows has never appeared on 7-inch single before.
