Angular rhythms, disembodied voices, repeated loops of audio debris all combine to forge a facsimile of reality that is wonderfully peculiar. The earthy environments of \u003cem\u003eDing\u003c\/em\u003e give it a remarkable depth of field, and Moebi masterfully allows a great deal of transparency in the mixes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe smallest of musical cues -- the alternating, faraway chords which float through '\u003cem\u003eBone\u003c\/em\u003e,' for example -- are sufficient to tie the seemingly disparate elements together into a satisfying, truly musical experience. The strands of natural, mechanical, and electronic sounds are so deftly juxtaposed that music never quite overwhelms noise, and the clamor is never allowed to stifle \u003cem\u003eDing\u003c\/em\u003e's strange poetry.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAltogether, \u003cem\u003eDing\u003c\/em\u003e feels like something of a small revelation -- there's liberation in Moebi's willful escape from a sound palette confined solely to his synthesizers. If the notion of manipulated, overlapping field recordings sounds dry and abstract, \u003cem\u003eDing\u003c\/em\u003e is anything but.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn places, the loping, syncopated pulses suggest the polyrhythms of African music, even funk -- but it's a state which never quite materializes because the rhythm loops are almost always trimmed slightly too long or too short, deliberately interrupting the 'groove' that otherwise could have taken hold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSo it's music you might conceivably dance to, if your legs aren't quite the same length. Mentally, it's much easier to dance with \u003cem\u003eDing\u003c\/em\u003e. Aside from his many collaborations with a wide variety of musicians, there are just seven \u003cstrong\u003eMoebius\u003c\/strong\u003e solo albums, one of which (\"\u003cem\u003eMetropolis\u003c\/em\u003e\") was released posthumously in 2015.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMoebius\u003c\/strong\u003e always wanted to create pop music and he actually thought of Cluster as pop. On the sleeve of the Cluster album \"\u003cem\u003eZuckerzeit\u003c\/em\u003e\" he can be seen sporting a colourful Hawaiian shirt whilst sitting on \u003cstrong\u003eRoedelius’s\u003c\/strong\u003e knee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe names he gave to the tracks which populated his LPs and CDs categorically rejected any form of overindulgence. He may have thought he was making pop music, but his interest in the material, aural substance aligns him more closely with contemporary classical composers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe repetitive patterns he favoured had less to do with baroque ornamentation and everything to do with minimal shifts in sound and rhythm, their rigour enhanced, time and again, by strange \"little\" electronic noises and reverberating layers. Never big on messages or statements, his focus has always been on feeling good about - and in - his music, a sensation he sought to share with his listeners.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFor this collection, my fascination with his music as strong as ever, I have deliberately zeroed in on \u003cstrong\u003eMoebius’s\u003c\/strong\u003e solo works, as they offer the clearest insight into his personality and inventive potential.
